be realistic and stay optimistic.

set some realistic, short term attainable goals. reach them and give yourself a pat on the back. these goals are stepping stones on your way to a higher goal: being a good smash player.

know that you will make mistakes on the way. but try not to beat yourself up too badly. that is your opponent's job. use the mistakes as opportunities to learn. (e.g. ask "what can i do to avoid the mistake next time?")

sum it up:

-you do well, give yourself a pat on the back.
-you make mistakes, learn from them.

you can't go wrong either way.
