MIDWEST CHAMPIONSHIPS 2010
* MAY 8TH - 9TH 2010 *
Tournament info ORIGINALLY POSTED by KEITS from www.shoryuken.com
Where: Crowne Plaza Hotel CHICAGO-NORTHBROOK. You can book your room by calling (847)298-2525 or 1-800-2CROWNE, or use the MWC Reservation website.
The venue address is:
2875 NORTH MILWAUKEE AVENUE
NORTHBROOK, IL 60062 UNITED STATES
When: May 8th and May 9th, 2010. Registration starts Friday night, or Saturday morning at 10am. Tournaments kickoff is at 12 noon Saturday and we close at 2am. Sunday we begin at 11am.
Venue features: The ballroom we will be using is the "Chicago" ballroom, and measures 2,596 Sq/ft. The hotel will be setting up a cash consession stand IN the ballroom, and will be selling very reasonably priced stadium-style eats (hotdogs, sodas, etc). On top of this, if you walk 6 feet across the hall from our ballroom, you will be inside a full Bar, so you can get your drink on if you are of-age (and you are welcome to bring your drinks back into the ballroom, so long as you dont share with minors! If you do this you will be kicked out of the venue.) The hotel has a full restauraunt as well that serves a breakfast buffet, and if you paid the venue fee for MWC, you will be able to get a discount at the restaurant with our group rate.
Hotel Rooms: I am super stoked to offer you guys rooms at the event for $69/night! Every room in the hotel, be it listed as having two beds or one, actually has two beds in it. (The single bed rooms have a sofa with a fold out bed in it.) The rooms have LCD televisions from LG that you are welcome to plug your game systems into (via RCA). Anyone who knows me knows I am one of the pickiest about monitor lag, and these TVs lag only a frame or two. They are great and I played TvC on one 60 games last night.
You can book your room by calling (847)298-2525 or 1-800-2CROWNE, or use the MWC Reservation website. The website is the best way to ensure you get the group rate. If you call, be sure to say you are in the Midwest Championships Group to ensure you get the special room rate and to ensure your rooms count toward the event total. The deadline to reserve your room is 4/23/2010. Even if you are local to the Chicago area, at this price, you should consider staying in the hotel Saturday night, as the tournament will run until 2am, and start again in the morning.
If you accidentally reserve a room without mentioning Midwest Championships, or if you use a Crowne prefered/frequent program to save money, please contact me ASAP via PM so I can make sure your room is added to our block.
Airport and Hotel Travel: Our venue is 9 miles up 294 from O'hare International Airport. A cab ride to the venue is about 27 dollars, so try to split, or offer someone at the event with a car half of that to come get you (its a pretty short drive).
Registration: Feel free to preregister in this thread by listing your gamer handle, real name, location, and the games you wish to enter, and please let me know if you personally reserve a room and for which nights. You do not need to let me know if you are splitting a room with someone else who paid.
All formal registration will be taken at the door. Every player, no matter how many tournaments they wish to enter, will pay the one-time Venue Fee of 20 dollars. You will also pay for every tournament you wish to enter, and their prices will be listed below in the Gamelist. If you wish to play casuals, meaning you are there to play games but not enter any tournaments, your Venue fee will be the 'casuals only' fee of 10 dollars.
All main and side tournaments will be run by MWC staff. To be clear, if you are playing a video game in the ballroom, casual or tournament, you need to have paid the venue fee (There is a casuals gaming venue fee of $10). Spectating is, as always, free.
IMPORTANT!!!
Late Registration notes - If you are going to be late to enter a tournament, please call a friend at the venue and have them pay to enter you, and then try to make it in before your match gets called. If you miss you match, you will be sent to the losers bracket, and if you miss that match you will be eliminated. If you do not get registered by the tournament start time, and believe me when I say we will be starting on time... you can still be entered into any Bye position on the bracket that sits in Winners1 or Losers1 rounds. If those rounds complete, no more late entries will be accepted. Please do not be late, or try to make an arangement to have a friend register you. We will be taking registrations Friday night before the event if you wish to give yourself more time Saturday morning for breakfast, practice, or sleep.
Equipment Discount: If you bring a TV or Game System and we decide to use it, and you are able to leave it for the full duration of the event, you will recieve a 5 dollar refund from your venue fee when the event closes on Sunday. Please bring your equipment out to help this tournament run smoothly. We need CRT televisions, Evo monitors, and PS3s more than anything, though a few PS2s and Wiis will be welcome as well. We would also love you long time + happy ending if you brought extra power strips and extension cords. Please label your stuff! We need copies of all the games, too, though there is no rebate. Do your part to help this event be a major success.
Prizes: After paying your venue fee, you pay to enter each tournament you wish to compete in. The full amount paid for each game goes into that game's "Prize Pool", and will be paid out to the top 3 placers in that game in the amounts of 70%/20%/10%.
TRUST ME, YOU WANT TO BE APART OF THIS RAFFLE. LOTS OF GREAT PRIZES ARE AT STAKE.
Method: I'm pleased to announce that we will be using Tonamento to run MWC. That means you will be able to get text message alerts when your matches are up, so if you have a cell phone and a data plan, thats good on you! Tonamento also allows me run many different tournament games at once, so when the schedule is published, dont be surprised to see many of the games starting at the same time. Tonamento allows both tournament players and fans at home to follow the brackets live and view them anytime online. The hotel has free WiFi that you are welcome to use to check on the brackets at any time.
GAMES BEING PLAYED AND ENTRY FEES
Gamelist: These games will run no matter what. The Schedule for when these games will start will be released later. Please plan on staying the full duration of both tournament days if possible so you dont miss any action.

TOURNAMENT GAME RULES AND REGULATIONS
General - Your behavior at MWC is important. While we want everyone to be excited and "hype", no phsyical violence of any kind will be tolerated. You will not be warned at all. If you hit anyone or anything, or make any threats, you will be ejected from the event and banned from future events. Its just that simple. We also ask that you maintain a respectable perimeter around our live-stream staff and our director's pit. We have a lot of work to do so that you have a smooth event to enjoy, and we'd really appreciate it if you avoid crowding in on us.
Aside from that, you need to know that a "Set" or "Match" consists of 2/3 or 3/5 "Games", which consist of 2/3 or 3/5 "Rounds". Every tournament will be double elimination format, meaning you have to lose two Sets to be eliminated. The number of Games in a set, and Rounds in a game will vary by software title.
This event is a "Bring your own Controller" event. Joysticks and/or gamepads will not be supplied. With the exception of the Wii software titles, wireless controllers are explicitly banned from this event. If you have a PS3 controller that is wireless, you must plug it in via USB cable while playing, and turn the controller off in the PS3 menu as soon as you disconnect your controller after the Set ends. Borrowing a controller/joystick from someone, or loaning yours out, is not a valid excuse to delay your match. No turbo or macro functions are allowed on your controllers. If you are caught using turbo or macros, you will be disqualified on the spot. Button mapping using the in-game menu is, however, allowed.
If your controller malfunctions, you must call a stop to the match right away and call for a judge to inspect your controller before you touch it again. If the judge finds your malfunction to be real, your match will be delayed so you can find a replacement controller and then replayed reasonably from the last "Game" won as soon as possible. If the judge finds your controller is working fine, you will be given a loss on the spot, no matter how many rounds/games were won/lost. If you wait to complain your controller was not working until after a round/game/set, nothing will be done to help you. Call for it as soon as it happens.
When your name is called for a match, you will have 2 minutes to get to your station to play, or you will face disqualification. If you need to leave the room before you are eliminated from the tournaments to get food or so to the bathroom for more than a minute or two, please notify the director's table before you leave and when you return. If you are placed "On-Deck" on a station, you and your opponent need to stay near the station until it opens up so you can play your match.
If you win a match at MWC, it is your responsibility to report your win to the director's pit. If you fail to do so, you may be given a loss even though you won, as the director has no way of knowing. You will be able to check the brackets at any time, in real time, online through the Tonamento.com system. If you notice any errors, like a loss posted where you won, please alert the director's pit ASAP.
No outside food or drink is allowed in the ballroom what-so-ever. Food/Drink purchased from the hotel's concession stand, bar, or restaurant is okay to have in the ballroom.
No pausing the games at any time is permitted. If you pause the game, you will be given a loss for that round, and your opponent will be allowed to beat your character up to get the game to roll over to the next round, even if this builds him meter. Tough luck, you shouldnt have paused the game. If you pause during an animation that would have killed the opponent, the "Imminent Defeat" rule from Evo will trigger, and you will still get your win. Pausing including hitting a 'home' button.
In all games, the winner of a game within a set must keep his character, and the loser may switch. Players will select their initial characters in a reasonable amount of time. If either player wishes, he can call for a judge to assist with double blind selection, in which the requestor will whisper his choices to the judge, and then his opponent will choose their characters. The judge will enforce the requestor chooses whom he said he would, to be sure neither player saw who his opponent was choosing first.
Game Rules -
Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii) [10$]
During Pools (this may apply to SSBM or ANY fighting game that has the "pool" feature):
Pools work like this:
You play vs. a selected (seeded) handfull of players in round robin. Whoever (could be more than one person, depending on how many advance outa pools) has the best record, advances to the double elimination bracket.
Less than 36 people play in pools = we'll have a 24 man bracket
More than 36 people play in pools = we'll have a 32 man bracket
During the Double Elimination bracket:
Format and Settings:
Double Elimination
3 Stocks, 8 minutes time
Damage Ratio 1.0
Handicap Off
Best 2/3 Games
All Finals Best 3/5 Matches
Items set to "Off" and "None"
Starter Stage List:
NOTE: IT IS UP TO YOU GUYS TO REMEMBER THE STAGE LIST. IT WILL MAKES THINGS RUN A LOT MORE SMOOTHER. I WILL HAVE A COPY OF THE STAGE LIST AVAILABLE IF NEEDED.
Neutral:
Final Destination
Battlefield
Yoshi's Island (Brawl)
Smashville
Lylat
Counter Stage List:
Delfino Plaza
Battleship Halberd
Castle Siege
Brinstar
Pokemon Stadium 1 (Melee Version)
Frigate Orpheon
Rainbow Cruise
ANY STAGE THAT IS NOT MENTIONED ABOVE IS BANNED!!!
Set format:
1. Opponents choose their characters for the first match
PLEASE NOTE:
* Double blind character selection may be called for the first match if needed. A T.O will come and keep track of what characters are used by players.
2. Opponents start the stage striking procedure. (Who starts will be decided by playing SHANKING FIST aka RPS). Then each player will alternate striking a stage until there is 1 left. That stage is played first round. THERE IS NO RANDOM UNLESS AGREED UPON.
3. Each player may announce one stage to be banned for counter pick of the set.
4. The first game is played, using the stage chosen during step 2.
5. The loser of the previous match announces the next match's stage from either the Starter Stage List or the Counter Stage List.
6. The winner of the previous match chooses their character.
7. The loser of the previous match chooses their character.
8. Repeat steps 5-7 for all proceeding matches.
Additional Rules:
- Stalling is Banned!
- If you use any controller styles that use the wiimote you will be responsible for removing the batteries inbetween your matches. Failure to do so can result in a DQ.
- In the event of a dispute, controller ports will be selected by playing SHAKING FIST.
- No player may choose a stage they have already won on in that set unless agreed upon by both players.
- If the timer runs out, the victor is determined first by stock and then by percentage.
- Metaknight's Infinite Cape glitch is banned (because it falls into the "Stalling violation").
- If a game ends with Bowser's Suicide Claw or Ganon's Arial Choke Slam the player who performed the move wins!!!
- You are responsible for your own controller and name tag. Any malfunctions or errors that occur are your responsibility, so bring an extra controller if possible and always check to make sure you're using the correct settings BEFORE a match is played. If a match is to be restarted due to controller functions, it must be agreed upon by both parties.
- Any action that can prevent the game from continuing (i.e., freezing, disappearing characters, game reset, etc.) will result in a forfeit of that match for the player that initiated the action. You are responsible for knowing your own character, and must be wary about accidentally triggering one of these effects.
- Stalling/Chain Grabbing (applies to both Melee and Brawl): The act of deliberately avoiding any and all conflict so that one may make the game unplayable. Running away from an opponent to reach a better position is not stalling, while doing an infinite grab endlessly against a wall is. Any infinite chain grabs must end quickly after 100% past when the chain grab started (for example: if the CG started at 43%, you must end the CG...in some fashion... @ 143%). Also, deliberately avoiding any and all combat is stalling, where as jumping on and off the ledge doing an aerial at your opponent is simply spacing.
So with this said...
- Marth's hold release infinite vs. Lucus/Ness is banned.
- You are ONLY allowed 50 planks (catch edge. release edge. repeat) a game (this doesn't apply in Brawl+).
Also...

Tournament info ORIGINALLY POSTED by KEITS from www.shoryuken.com
TOURNAMENT VENUE INFORMATION"I know a lot of you were starting to wonder why there had not been an announcement about the legendary Midwest Championships for 2010. The short answer is that MWC is in my hands this year, and we are saying goodbye to Nickel City. Its been a good run there, but consoles are the home of competitive fighting games now, and its time to move forward. MWC is back in 2010, directed by Keits (with Nives as assistant-director), and its going to prove the old axiom this May."
UPDATE Galaxy4Gamers.com is now sponsoring MWC! Sorry for the late notice on this, but they are really excited to be contributing.
After MWC is over, you will be invited to join a post-MWC online tournament held by Galaxy4Gamers with a nice big cash prize for top honors. Details about this will come later, but you can sign up for Galaxy4Gamers at MWC to be easily included in this online tournament later.
4 days away!
UPDATE Online hotel booking is shut off, but they DO have rooms left and you can still get them at the group rate of 69/night.
This quote is from the hotel after I asked them about more rooms for this week. You just need to call Susan and tell her you are with the MWC group to get a room.
UPDATE Bad news - There will be no wifi at the hotel during MWC hours. All of the bandwith will be routed to the live-stream to ensure a smooth and clear stream. You will be able to use the free wifi at the hotel during non-event hours. Friday 6pm to 10pm, Saturday 12 noon to 2am, and Sunday 11am to 10pm, wifi will not be available.
I apologize for this, but the hotel had promised to have a 2nd line installed for the live stream and due to unforeseen circumstances, it will not be installed on time. Hopefully you guys will be too busy having fun during event hours to care that you cant jump on the net real quick.
I've also been getting questions about parking. Parking is free and there is plenty of it. There is also no need to pre-register for this event. Pre-registration was for time-planning purposes, and all official registsration will be taken at the event. You must be paid before your tournament starts. Do not expect to get in line to register at 11:55am because SSF4 starts at 12 noon. You will be late if you do and will not be entering. Come early. Come down friday night and register between 6 and 10pm. See you guys this weekend!
UPDATE - Teams Announcement:
Sunday May 9th @ 12 Noon
SSF4 and T6 Teams begins.
-3 on 3, 30 dollars per team to enter.

-Example: The first three matches will always be Team A Player1 vs Team B Player 1, then Team A Player 2 vs Team B Player 2, then Team A Player 3, vs Team B Player 3. Recycle the order with remaining players there after.
-Payout is 70%/30% to the first and 2nd place teams if 8 or more teams enter. If less than 8 teams enter, it will be winner take all.
At 4:00pm, SSF4 Random-Teammates 5 on 5 Begins
-Enter alone for $5 with your character
-You will be randomly sorted onto teams of 5 players with no overlapping characters
-Rules are the same as the other team tournaments otherwise
-Please try to make friends and help or learn from other players during this event.
UPDATE Rain is not coming to Chicago for Tekken now. Sorry for the misinformation, but apparently he planned to come and now cannot. Alex Valle IS coming, however, so you can test your skills against one of the old pros himself in HDr, ST, and SSF4.
UPDATE Madcatz is officially sponsoring MWC! This means a $1,000 Dollar pot bonus on Super Street Fighter 4 singles competition (which will be split separately from the normal prize pool, details later this week) to help you make your way to Evo2010. MWC will also have a door-prize system this year. If you paid the venue fee, you are automatically entered at no additional charge to win gaming related goodies! In the raffle are up to 5 Madcatz TE fightsticks, so you may be going home with a brand new stick just for showing up!
UPDATE:
GUARANTEED BONUS POT MONEY IS STRICTLY FOR SUPER STREET FIGHTER 4
I'm pleased to finally announce the MWC Bonus structure. While the normal prize-pool money will be paid out traditionally, with 70% going to 1st place, 20% to 2nd place, and 10% to 3rd place, the Bonus Pot will be calculated separately. The bonus pot on SSF4 is Madcatz' way of trying to get all of the best players out to Evo, and as such, they want you to use your bonus money toward getting to Vegas! The bonus pot split will go all the way down the top 8 as follows:
1st - 30% (70% of prize pool + 30% of bonus pot)
2nd - 20% (20% of prize pool + 20% of bonus pot)
3rd - 15% (10% of prize pool + 15% of bonus pot)
4th - 10% (10% of bonus pot)
5th - 7.5% (7.5% of bonus pot, two players will tie for 5th)
7th - 5% (5% of bonus pot, two players will tie for 7th)
As an example, lets look at SSF4. Lets say we have 200 entries, so the Prize Pool total is 2000 dollars (Prize pool splits between the top 3 finishers 70/20/10). The bonus pot from Madcatz to help the winners get to Evo is 1000 dollars (Bonus money is split between the top 8 finishers 30/20/15/10/7.5/7.5/5/5). Lets see what the totals would be like;
1st - 1400p + 300b = 1700$
2nd - 400p + 200b = 600$
3rd - 200p + 150b = 350$
4th - 100b = 100$
5th and 5th - 75b = 75$
7th and 7th - 50b = 50$
UPDATE 16 Trophies are up for grabs at MWC. Get 1st-3rd in SSF4, or 1st in HDr, T6, MvC2, TvC, MBAA, GGAC, Mystery, Windjam, ST arcade, Garou, 3s, CvS2, or Puzzle Fighter HD to take one home!
UPDATE MWC has just been announced as an Evo qualifier. The top two players from all six Evo featured games will get seeds into pools at Evolution 2010! Preferential pool placement can keep you from running into other powerful players too early. More exciting announcements about MWC will be coming weekly!
Sponsors: We are pleased to announce that GPX Gaming will be coming out to sponsor MWC by donating a lot of equipment! These guys are great and have some great stuff, so look forward to it!
AreaXIII has just signed on to donate a load of CRT televisions as well, so huge thanks to DeadXIII for doing that for us. Be sure to show your continuing support to him.

Neutral:

Yoshi's Island (Brawl)

Also...
This is now known as the the -Due to something that happened last month, I need to announce a rule clarification
If you are caught bringing a setup that modifies actual gameplay (texture hacks, and stage hacks do not modify gameplay, only appearance) you will be disqualified from the tourney you entered, and your setup will be taken down. This includes, but is not limited to "no-tripping" setups.
Like it or not, tripping it part of the game, and modifying setups for no-tripping is not to be used.
I'll also clarify, that if your music hacks, stage hacks, or texture hacks are obnoxious, or make playing the game difficult (hard to see, etc...) a T.O. may ask you to take them off your setup. So far we haven't had problems with this, but just letting that be known just in case.
