Man, I should venture out of atlantic south more often. Not only do I find a semi-active music thread, but one where people actually give a **** about jazz. Dante seems like my kind of people.

Guess I should contribute some stuff.

Jazz:

Been listening to a lot of Esperanza Spalding lately. If you keep up with semi-recent grammy stuff she's the jazz bassist/vocalist that beat out justin beiber for best new artist, which made me extremely happy.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2aRC3YY3svs
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17lpfvyWhhM ( <- duo with bobby mcferrin from the above grammies)

Here's some other random stuff I've been listening to:

Chick Corea 5-Peace Band (with John McLaughlin, Kenny Garrett, Christian McBride, and Vinnie Colaiuta):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CmEmFDSAlTQ

Chris Potter's Underground: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-x4f7o-8E8

Lots of others, I'll post up more if anyone wants.

For the less jazz, more blues/rock inclined:

Derek Trucks/Susan Tedeschi Band:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UO3sUczuokQ and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Eb_UXDxUbs
(2 Versions of the same tune, one a studio take with Herbie Hancock and Vinnie Colaiuta, the other live with Warren Hayes, Chris Stanten, and about half of Los Lobos)

Jeff Beck with Joss Stone: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P7ECdYboOVA and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bunNRu4mBbY
Both are both really good.

Also, if you just type Crossroads Guitar festival 2007 into youtube you will find a basically unending stream of awesome. There's also a 2009 one that has some good stuff, but 2007 was really when the magic happened.

I can keep going if people want.

**For DanteFox** Have you checked out Bunky Green? If you haven't you really need to. He's kinda the unknown precursor to Steve Coleman, Rudresh Mahanthappa, Kenny Garrett (sort of), Greg Osby, and others. He's off the radar since he's mainly been teaching for years (I'm lucky enough to have studied with him), but he's randomly getting back into performing and recording since 2006-7ish. In particular he put out a collaboration with Rudresh last year that is fairly mindblowing. Check him out if you haven't already.

I just can't get into any of the modern sax players besides Kenny Garrett and Alex Han. They all lack something and I can't shake the feeling that the scene is missing that one player that plays everything I want to hear, like Bird did so many years ago. I do wonder if we'll ever see a talent of his towering magnitude ever again, much less in my lifetime.

Alex Han is one I haven't heard. Listening to him as I write this - guy's pretty nasty. It's like if you took Eric Marienthal's sound and gave him 290349823948x the chops and harmonic sophistication at half his age.

Shame you don't dig many of the newer cats though. Sure, none of them have reinvented the music to the extent Bird did, but that's a pretty high standard to hold people to. And honestly, if I'm just going to pick someone out of the ipod to listen to, I'm way more likely to go to Joshua Redman or Chris Potter than Parker (though obviously if I'm practicing that's not necessarily true).

Well that's a relief. He's one of the people that I really have a hard time imagining anyone being into anything remotely resembling modern jazz and not liking.

space has become my new favorite metaphor for life, taking over water

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1ZmBj5XfDo

here are the lyrics:

There is space all around us
Space that occupies the length of the sky from the ground up
It abounds and astounds us
Space that we just can't wait to eliminate when we've found lust
And the very thing we pray for when our mates are starting to hound us
The sound of space silent, and breaking the speed of sound is violent
But it's necessary to crack the atmosphere to find it
There's Space between cars when you've sped in the streets that should never
be breached or you're dead and deceased
There's even space between Letterman's teeth
You'd better increase the space between us
Cause personal space invaders get their gender planets switched from Mars to Venus
Banished into uncharted regions, sandwiched between millenniums
Challengers get brandished as wasted space like their perineum's
Space is at a premium, so guard your place
It's hard to take a harsher fate, than cats jacking your parking space
Your car's displaced, and I fit in where I can, and if you're a guy
Your petitioning women to fill up the space between their thighs
And I've realized that space is what makes safer sex
Relying on rubbers that won't break or stretch, to place your bets
I raise the question and most heads will take a guess
Why? Cause most cats ain't smart enough to be Astronauts
but make amazing Space Cadets
I'm acing tests, cause I'm known perform with grace
Scorching 'em over breaks - my mind serves as my lyrical storage space
I've scorched the bass drum, and I've spared snares when the board's recording
My big bang theory states that space got more suns than George Foreman
I'm tormenting rappers that are 2 faced cheaters
Claiming their block is hot
but only with the power set to max on their space heaters
The waste they feed us is alarming
Their CDs are overpriced like living space in lower Manhattan apartments
There's space in a coffin, for your remains to be rotten
Space that is made of stars, and space that's contained in a carton
Space in this game for those willing to suffer pain
Space for a new thought to stuff in your brain
But there's no space in my ****ING name

one of the great troll songs of all-time:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xYauc8CQzdc

****, you ain't looking for a wife, are ya?
i know your steez, *****, you probably got a life parter

LADIES!

honk your horn if you're in love with a psycho
who might go out on the prowl rockin' a nightrobe
just say you love me cuz i'm a nutcase
and you can spend our honeymoon wrapped up in duck tape

FELLAS!

suck my **** if you don't love all my rap songs
i'll hunt you down in a black thong with an axe drawn
this cat's gone right over the cuckoo's nest
and i ain't coming back with any scruples left
