I've been listening to them nonstop, so it's about time for them to get their own Music Thread post. Plus, these guys are blowing up fast and I'm egotistical enough to want everyone to know I've been listening to them for longer than that.
ODD FUTURE WOLF GANG KILL THEM ALL
Odd Future (or Wolf Gang, OFWGKTA, Golf Wang etc) is a hip-hop collective from Los Angeles started by teen Tyler, The Creator (I think he was 17 when he formed OF). These guys are young, hungry and talented. I think their dark raps are really the only thing that will hold them back from becoming household names. These guys are angsty, depressed and pissed off and rap about suicide, ****, murder, drugs and **** like that. It's hard to sell this as quality, but it's worth giving them a shot. They aren't really horrorcore rappers, it's more the dark fantasies of kids.
They do everything for themselves, no record deal. All of their music is uploaded for free on the internet. They've generated incredible buzz without the support of a lot of major hip-hop blogs (they call out 2dopeboyz and nah right as well as others on their albums). These kids are gonna be the musical guest on Jimmy Fallon this month, sharing the stage with The Roots. I'm floored by how widespread they've reached without even touring (I think they've played like twice outside of the LA area).
These guys have a pretty big discography already (the first album they released, Tyler's *******, came out in December 09) so there's a lot I haven't gotten to listen to thoroughly yet. Here are some of the tracks I'm digging right now:
Earl Sweatshirt - Luper
I think this track is a really good sample track for understanding what Odd Future is about. Earl starts out talking about waking up for school and this girl he digs, but it gets dark when she isn't interested in him. I think Earl is possibly the most talented rapper of the bunch, but was sent off to boarding school (or possibly boot camp, OF hasn't given a straight answer about it) at some point. He's a 16 year old kid that's tearing it up.
WolfHaley (aka Tyler, The Creator) and Hodgy Beats - Sandwitches
This is no-holds-barred OFWGKTA. Tyler and Hodgy go in on this track, killing everything in sight. If you dig this cut, check out
this video of them doing it live. These guys are ****ing intense on stage. (Tyler comes out in the ski mask).
MellowHype - Polyurthane
Not everything they do is dark. MellowHype (a sub-group of Hodgy Beats and Left Brain) in particular are more content to be chill on the track. This is a nice laidback cut.
if anyone in norcal is down they're playing in SF on the 22nd. i want to go, but have no one to go with
