I kind of agree, but it all comes down to how exactly he's implemented. The safest possible interpretation could be very dull, but there's plenty of room to give Erdrick some personality in his animations, and honestly I wouldn't mind if he was voiced too. I'd personally love to see him played as kind of a goofball, more like Pit than Link or Marth. The face of DQ should definitely be upbeat and fun.
Coincidentally, in the CD theatre adaptation, Erdrick was voiced by Marth's japanese voice actor. I wouldn't mind him if he had a voice. But at the same time I'm not really expecting a voice either.
I stand on the opposite end of the issue, to me a voiced Erdrick is far more generic than mute Erdrick just dishing out those classic DQ combat noises. To me that is far more personality than Hayaahhh noises.
My ideal Erdrick and DQ rep would be similar to MegaMan.
This version is pretty much what you're asking for. It's the design I like the best, at least for Smash's purposes. Probably not what we'll get, though.
Holy crap, that one's perfect. I know the chibi proportions are just so that it's consistent with the other protagonists, but I'd love for him to look exactly like that. Well, with the Battle Road Victory color palette, at least.
In my case, it’s quite the opposite. Everything about DQ3 bleeds Dragon Quest. If there’s one game in the series that I feel captures the DQ charm perfectly, it’s DQ3. Well, 8 too, because 3 lacks the party member interactions.
You probably feel this way, and I don’t blame you, because it’s hard to make an 8 bit game (and a strict recreation in 16-bit) have expressions in the characters.
Also, playing devil’s advocate, but they wouldn’t give more expressions to a character that is supposed to play “you” (or vice versa) if they don’t need to. It’s like their design philosophy.
I haven’t really seen any main character be expressive tbh. Eight and Luninary are probably the only expressive ones.
As for design... well, it’s all subjective, but I find Erdrick’s outfit and accessories to be iconic. That tiara alone is emblematic.
And on a personal level, Toriyama artwork is quite the opposite of “generic”. I don’t understand why people keep saying it’s generic. It’s extremely distinctive from every other anime/manga artist.
From clothes, to hair, to eyebrows, to accessories, to vehicles, to monsters, to robots, etc.
I disagree with the idea a DQ main character shouldn't be expressive considering how I feel Eight and Luminary benefit from increased expressiveness despite being silent protags. Also not knocking the design itself btw. My problems mostly come down to Erdrick Post-NES having basically two facial animations which makes the character really boring to me given the fact that he is a Toriyama design & half the fun of Toriyama's artwork imo is how well he does facial animations. It would suck if Erdrick joined Smash and ended up as limited in expressiveness as say Smash Link or the FE characters.

Back in the day, you had to use your imagination a lot more, which is both good and bad. It's really good for what the genre was 'meant' to be, Role Playing. You get to put your own emotions into it rather than relying on what they create. I dont mind at all the new direction, but I like both, and I think it's a shame when people dont get to use their imagination as much and are doing what they do when just watching tv. To me a role playing game isn't supposed to be a show that you watch. I like expressiveness too tho, just to say.
It's also a problem that has to do with 2d sprites in general, compared to how easy it is to animate these days. As a retro rep Erdrick is great, and i dont think we should be looking at modern games to say that represents dragon quest more, since there's more retro games than new.
Also, In DQ3 (after nes) you get to answer questions for a personality, which again if you use your imagination you can bridge the gaps yourself for it. No way to design so many personalities, so that kind of thing wouldn't work without investing a lot of time in animation.
But anyway look at incineroar, they added expression for smash, and they can easily do that again. S'all good.

I’m not saying they should. I’m saying that’s how they’re designed.
When I talk about my ideal Erdrick portrayal in smash, I never leave out how I want his taunts to capture the expressions and gags that are common In Toriyama’s works.
You know, like crossing his arms, tilting his head a bit and looking down (in perfect Goku fashion), or maybe doing something embarrassing.
And like I said, it’s something about 2D sprites. If DQ3 were remade in 3D, they’d probably give him more life.

I don't think the classic sound effects are in doubt. Smash's attention to detail when it comes to stuff like that has only gotten more and more intense over time. The question is whether he'd be voiced on top of that, which... who even knows. I'd be up for the works myself, win quotes and shouting spell names and everything, but who knows how far they'd take it.
One disadvantage Erdrick has vs. the Luminary is that he's got no voice-acted buddies to make a fuss over his gameplay reveal like Joker did. I guess there's Empyrea, though she's not exactly excitable.

Well, if. DQ isn’t that kind of game, then the trailer shouldn’t necessarily have to have people in the background commentating.
Although who knows? Maybe the cast from DQXI could be doing the talking.
Or heck, what if we got random text bubbles appearing everywhere doing the commentating?
Oh, and please please I hope we get the original DQ sound effects for all of Erdrick’s actions.
What if for a Star KO we get the game over jingle?
I like that the "fuse" gag they talked about near the end was eventually implemented into Super Mario RPG, after rescuing Peach and meeting with the king (or chancellor or whoever).

Can't Sakurai just take away the avatar aspect from Erdrick like what he did with Joker, who's also an avatar? This would allow Erdrick to be his own character, for better or worse. Fairly certain that if we get Erdrick, his representation will be exactly like Simon's. In which he's visually and audibly upgraded along with everything that makes Dragon Quest great. Using Persona as a reference, I think Sakurai will undoubtedly take from across the series to flesh out Erdrick, like how Simon has some of Richter's moves. I'm not exactly worried about any of this because Sakurai is the man who gave Joker the ****ing all-out attack victory screen. How can anyone be worried after this?

Honestly, if Joker and how he's represented is bland, then I don't know what you're looking forward to with Erdrick when it comes to characterization. If I remember from the recent posts here, this is a legitimate concern people have because Erdrick is supposed to be the self-insert hero. Therefore, what should you give him beyond bravery and maybe a smile? Joker has style to make up for his personality. So in character it sounds like Erdrick would be similar to Corrin but with the Toriyama art style. Got any ideas?

That's the thing. Why not take advantage of the fact he is self insert. Give him the mega man treatment. It would also be interesting if you can play Erdrick in whatever playstyle you want.
Want to camp like snake, go for it. Want him to be versatile and combo like YL, you can do that too.

I do like the idea of a mode shift, similar to Pokemon Trainer but for weapons. That would make for a great fighter.
In terms of characterization, I just don't know what exactly I'll be fine with beyond his chibi look because I think that has so much charm and is his first appearance.
Maybe I should actually play Dragon Quest 3 before I weigh in on this any further LOL.

Yeah! if they went balls out with this, aside from being a magic user and using multiple weapons, it would be interesting if they give him mode shifts like you said. In DQ11 characters are able to use different weapons that actually do something. So if they have Luminary as a skin, I wouldn't be upset if they give him that as a idea. Actually in the Luminary template that's still in development, that was an idea I had. Dual swords, SaS, and Greatsword.

Persona 5 is represented quite stylishly, but not his personality. Even most of the personality comes from morgana and the others.
But if we look at most other rpg characters in smash they're all pretty bland. But at least they have more vocals than he does. I think it's more that his blandness stands out more because of what they brought from persona.

Hey I always love more options and being able to shift playstyles, so even though I dont expect it, give me a strong jack of all trades like the hero class can be and I'll be pretty satisfied
I think for me, it's more or less his movement. There is just something really special with the way the smash team handled his weight and movement. Imagine if they were able to translate that in some way with Erdrick. Really doubt it but it would be fun.
So, I've been thinking about Erdrick's moveset potential lately. One thing I see brought up is that he'll be the second sword/magic user after Robin.
Now, what makes Robin unique is their wide variety of elemental spells, as well as their durability mechanic. In contrast to this, I think Erdrick could benefit greatly from focusing on buff/debuff spells, something that both distinguishes him from Robin and represents a key aspect of JRPG gameplay as a whole.
I'm not entirely sure how it would be implemented, though. The buff/debuff spells that I'm familiar with are Buff/Kabuff, Sap/Kasap, and Oomph. One idea I had was for one of his specials (either neutral or down) to bring up a Spell menu, giving him Kabuff and Kasap as options. Each spell would have a bit of startup and a specific amount of range in the case of Kasap, making it hard but rewarding to land. Unlike Inkling's Ink mechanic, the spells would only affect knockback, with Kabuff reducing the amount of knockback taken and Kasap increasing the amount, if it lands. Kabuff could be applied to both Erdrick or a team member in Team Battle, which I think reflects party management nicely.
Alternatively, they could just give him Kasap to simplify things.

This looks a lot like the spell menu idea I developed for my Erdrick template. While buffs/debuffs isn't a part of the heroes class to my knowledge, it would be a cool idea to have it. So essentially he becomes very similar to Shulk in a way. But having him cast debuffs to other characters would be an interesting idea. Imagine having that plus weapons, swordmastery abilities, and Hero class offensive magic. Just thinking about it is making me so happy.
Also how is that Erdrick art going btw if you don't mind me asking?

Debuffs aren't in the Hero's kit, at least not from the one game I played, but I thought it was appropriate. One difference from Shulk is that it only increases his weight value without any side effects, but actually landing the move without getting hit would be difficult. Maybe it could function similarly to Lucas's Offense Up in Project M.

Technically even Erdrick can cast debuffs, like Sleep and Stopspell. By themselves I don't think it'd be that interesting in smash, but it would at least not be too weird to have debuff magic. In Dragon Quest 4 the hero can learn Hocus Pocus, which can do random debuffs (among other things). Now I dont know about you but I find that a fun mechanic. I wouldn't mind one b move being a debuff, or then imagine if it's a random effect, that'd be pretty funny.
There's lots of possibilities including with buffing and healing magic too. Erdrick actually has quite a bit of healing. I dont know how they'd put that in smash to be balanced, but it's just another thought.
And then if we go beyond just the retro games we have just so many weapon skills, as well as other spells. Anyway you cut it, if sakurai wants to make a character like that unique, he can. But even if it'd go the magic warrior route, that's fine too, and it'll be different from a mage that has a sword like robin. Anyway the skies are open, and I'm sure it'd be an interesting and fun character, if joker is anything to look at.
Hmm... Tansut said that the DQ character was in a very early state when he first found out about it. With that info, we can infer that Erdrick, however early he may have been at the time, at least started development.
So, putting that together with this new overlooked information, that places our boy/girl as being either the 2nd or 3rd DLC character. For some reason, I'm leaning more towards Erdrick probably being the 3rd, but that's just me.
It's from a few months ago. I remember someone bringing it up. I dont know why it's just getting attention now. But we knew Brave was being worked on, and it makes sense that they've also been prepping #3. And they're definitely a lot further along now. To me it's as expected.

Brave was the second being worked on, so I dunno why you would think 3rd.
There's only really weak points with some people expecting a microsoft rep first, for the second dlc. If Erdrick is in, I really think it'll be the second one.
We'll see in the next months tho ;p

It's probably just me being pessimistic and feeling like we're going to be kept waiting even longer for closure on this whole thing. Hope I'm wrong, though.

Well it's true that pessimism can do that sometimes. I dont think they they would have a 2nd character codenamed Brave and also have Erdrick in for another spot. I also dont expect them to somehow move up another character project when they already had so much data in for that one.
Anyway, I'm more patient now because I dont want to invest as much in waiting around. But I do hope nintendo reveals the next two when they can. It'd be nice to have that 'closure' too for some.

So I was thinking about just how good would a lot of options make Erdrick.
Like, say he has a lot of stuff he can do. But it could be a little complicated.
Like, what if 3 of his specials had to do with different menus.
B: Magic
A Menu pops up where you can choose somewhere between 4 to 8 different spells. Including offense, buff, debuff, or even heal (because hey, if you have to manage your MP wisely, you could technically have a healing ability).
B Tilt: Equipment
A menu pops up where you can choose between 4 weapons and 4 shields to equip.
For example, weapons could be: Sword, Axe, Sickle, and Fist. They all share similar animations, but their properties are different.
Sword:
Damage 3/5
knockback 3/5
Range 3/5
Axe:
Damage 4/5
Knockback 4/5
Range 2/5
Sickle:
Damage 3/5
Knockback 2/5
Range 5/5
Fist:
Damage 2/5
Knockback 5/5
Range 1/5
Then shields (could be reverse Side+B)
For example...
Roto’s shield (reduces MP recovery time)
Mirror shield (acts like a reflector when hit with projectile)
Tempest shield (counters with windbox explosion when hit with projectile)
Steel shield (increases shield sphere size).
And well, then we can all mostly agree that Up+B should be Zoom/Chimera wing and Down+B being tension.
What do you guys think?
Changeable sword and shield on top of magic, all 3 used through a different menu?
Or too convulted?

I had ideas about changing equipment in the past, but I think that much is way too much work. Like some of us thought joker would be able to change personas since that's true to the persona games, but in the end we only have one. At least there are differences to the moves with Arsene, so it's not impossible to have one set of something change and affect attacks. Like one change of equipment or a menu to have different magic. They're some good ideas but i dont think we'd see much, or anything of it.
And at this point I also dont think down b will be tension because we just got characters with something similar, like incineroar and joker now.
I think there's a lot of potential from dragon quest that could be interesting as b moves besides that anyway
Another unrelated idea, and I know dragon quest wouldnt be known for this but I think it'd be cool to be able to throw a shield for an attack. Not necessarily for erdrick, but I think it'd be cool to do that around in smash

Shield combos would be sick! Also I wonder if Tension would be more like a rage mechanic except it is more like Lucarios aura. In that case down b would be perfect for kaclang
I unsubscribed from his channel but really what he says adds nothing it's just fans speculating we all have to wait and see who's next now were all just debating about it
Doesn't say anything really new. The only thing that's still weird for me is how Brave is a lot more straight forward in terms of referring to Erdrick while Jack and Doyle are more obscure in terms of referring to Joker and Arsene respectively. But that still doesn't lead us anywhere. Could mean anything, and Erdrick could still be a different character even if he's not "Brave".
