Anyways guys here is my first fanart I did for upcoming E3. Now that Joker is in, I can just imagine this is happening right now.

Doesn't say anything really new. The only thing that's still weird for me is how Brave is a lot more straight forward in terms of referring to Erdrick while Jack and Doyle are more obscure in terms of referring to Joker and Arsene respectively. But that still doesn't lead us anywhere. Could mean anything, and Erdrick could still be a different character even if he's not "Brave".
Hey actually it get stronger that Brave could be Erdrick. Jack is to Joker as they both are playing cards, Arsenè is related to Doyle as Conan Doyle write Sherlock Holmes, the literary counterpart of Arsenè Lupin.
Erdrick now is one of the few that it's name can refers to the word Brave.

About the two reveals in E3 I believe Erdrick is Brave, but if he will be the 2nd DLC or the 3rd will depend on how they will handle the announcement. If they show on the Direct Erdrick will be the 2nd, if they leave to MS and SE presentations, if the other is a MS character, Erdrick will be 3rd.

We'll get nowhere with talking about codenames. Morgana's Codename is Mona in the data (Bus for the victory screen Monabus). We don't know how specific they can actually get.

Yeah Brave being Erdrick is much more direct than Jack and Doyle, which could be suspicious or not. I also think SE and MS reps will be revealed at E3.

Didn't know that, but you're right. At this point we don't know if Brave is supposed to be a straightforward codename or not.

Yup I dont watch his videos because they don't add anything really good.

If someone extracts any points from it we can talk about it, but i still dont feel like watching his vids.
Honestly I just got tired of the content although I'll always respect him on the level of he's an issac bro

I just dont like that he takes on all sorts of rumors and makes a big deal of them as if they hold water. It's not something I enjoy. If it were a comedy show or something about rumors and leaks that'd be fine and fun. :p

Everyone's free to make their own content tho :)
I just hope there's more and more good content overall.

I actually like that there's a lot of gaming stuff on youtube, it's pretty cool.

I get what you mean but it is his job YouTube is a fickle mistress so doing stuff like that is profitable

Technical not that suspicious, Brave is a very common word, without the leak just people that are a fan of DQ in the west that know Japanese could suspect that. The thing is that Yūsha is easier to think in something to hind then Arsenè to a native Japanese speaker. And it also remark that the codes are based in something related to their names, not something on their franchise nor the first letter thing. Crow, Thief or Devil would be fitting if they based on the apparency. Fool, Rebel or Demon if it was related with something in the franchise and simple. Arch or Archier if it was related to just the first letter.
Sorry to been so prolix in it.

Edit: Hey! Just think something... What if, they show Erdrick and the MS Char in the E3 and release Erdrick right after their presentation. Like they show MS Character in MS conference, but it's number 73 and then Erdrick is show in SquareEnix's as the 72, then in the Nintendo Direct had a showcase of the two together and of the 4.0.0, so they say something thing like "Oh, by the way, you should be asking why they numbers are like that, right?" and then they announce that Erdrick and 4.0.0 will be available right after the presentation.

Thinking a little more about spirits, it bums me out that Toriyama's never done illustrations of Ortega or Rubiss. I don't know which is weirder: that Ortega has never had an official design despite being so important, or that Rubiss does have official artwork, but it's by Mutsumi Inomata and doesn't fit Dragon Quest that well. Very pretty, though.

Patty really dodged a bullet by having a big enough role in DQIX to warrant a real design.

I kind of agree, but it all comes down to how exactly he's implemented. The safest possible interpretation could be very dull, but there's plenty of room to give Erdrick some personality in his animations, and honestly I wouldn't mind if he was voiced too. I'd personally love to see him played as kind of a goofball, more like Pit than Link or Marth. The face of DQ should definitely be upbeat and fun.

This version is pretty much what you're asking for. It's the design I like the best, at least for Smash's purposes. Probably not what we'll get, though.
While I'm not sure if Toriyama drew it, Ortega did receive an official portrait in one of the mobile games with a design based on the NES/SFC version (I say "NES" and not Famicom because the NES version was the first to give Ortega unique sprites, which carried back over to the SFC remake of 3).

Although ironically, a majority of Japanese players like his palette swapped version from the original Famicom release just as much, if not more. It's why that version was in Monster Battle Road Victory and Dragon Quest 10.

Sadly, there is no official Toriyama design of Rubiss (yet. Maybe someday, tho...)

Also just a heads up guys, but don't forget that Dragon Quest Day is May 27th in Japan. Might be a good time to make an important announcement, don't you think?

Ortega lookin' like Chadrick here.

That only became a thing last year, right? I'm not sure if there are any expectations for the event yet.

More like "Dadrick".

Also, yeah it did. That's why I said it might be a good time to make some kind of announcement and do something with the date. But who knows?

In terms of Smash it's certainly a possibility but I'm not gonna really put all my eggs in it. However, having that plus something related to DQ monsters, more details on DQ11, a DQ Erdrick collection on the switch, and finally Erdrick for smash would be quite the celebration indeed. I'm very curious on what they would do.

It's funny how the DQ5 movie will break the videogame adaptations curse resurrected by the Sonic movie after having it finished by Detective Pikachu.

If we really do get ports of the classics, I'm pretty confident we'd get IV-VI as well as I-III (and maybe even VII?), though they'd probably come later. Getting those games available on something other than phones is long overdue, and having so much of the series on a modern console would make it much easier for people to jump in. That's the whole point of all this, right?

I just hope that the ports would be decent. I'd love to see I-III get some kind of definitive edition, with all the best features from the other versions and a few new extras, but I'm resigned to probably getting minimum effort phone ports.

Here's a little bit of a rant about the 'brave' points brought against erdrick.

First of all, I've mentioned this a few times in other threads, but we only have 2 codenames, from the same series, we can check about right now, which means a very low sample of things to compare. How someone can think that the same 'complexity' will apply to all codenames in the future from just that is beyond me. It's the worst kind of generalization--taking one thing and saying everything's going to be like that. It's ridiculous, and it's basically like any 'ism' (like how generalization can lead to racism) but worse because there's only one thing to base themselves on. Not only that but the programmers are not good with encrypting things, they're new to this and they only recently figured out to not leave any of it in the code. I really dont think it makes sense to think that they'd think so much further for it.

If they'd thought maybe the code would be scrutinized and thought further on the code names, do you really think that they would give some false hope regarding a DQ character? I really don't think they thought that much ahead. Most people talking about it don't even understand how 'brave' is not something you would commonly see over there. It's mostly only bad translations that pin a hero as a 'brave'. It doesnt make sense in english, and it doesn't make sense in japanese either since the word they use is Yuusha, and anyone who knows english wouldn't translate it to brave. There are also many ways to say brave in japanese, over a dozen. So it is actually cryptic in a way. Yuusha is an odd word that happens to be a noun, not an adjective like brave, so you have to think a bit unorthodox to make the connection from the word brave to Hero.

Now, we're lucky that we saw a couple places where they used 'brave' for erdrick, and I dont think that would've happened if not that Dragon Quest is so popular in japan and talked about. That helped show that it could easily be connected with DQ.
But now some people who try to find whatever they can to lower a character's chances take the other side and say ok well it's too obvious so it can't be Erdrick. Which is ****ing bull****, first they're saying it doesn't connect enough, now they're saying it connects too much, like how the **** can someone have a break? They'll use whatever they can to free up their character slot in their mind, It's just ridiculous to me. Anyway, I've seen some of what a bunch say around that, and they don't know anything about how it is in japanese, I've even seen some say that brave is 'literally'a word for erdrick, not even knowing that it's a general word that can mean 'hero' and more. I dont want to say they all do that, it's just some people, but I'm just showcasing how weird some of them get with points like that. Dragon Quest is just big enough that the word's connected to the series well enough.

I also have my suspicions that the codenames they used for persona didn't even originally come from nintendo, but from Atlus. I don't have anything concrete to back that up except connections and theories about some inspirations and themes that was around some of persona 5. I thought at first that p5r was about a new game and so there'd be a new motif, but the story for p5 actually makes sense already for some of the themes talked about. I dont think the programmers were all that familiar with all the stuff from the late 19th century and early 20th, I think those themes probably came from Atlus when talked about with sakurai, assuming he wanted to know about some of persona's inspirations. This is just conjecture, so dont use it in arguments, but I'm just giving some extra possibilities for why I think the points dont really mean much.

Even without knowing that, it pisses me off that some people try to use the (weak) point as if it would make it impossible for dragon quest to be refered to, like they can't even just say it's 'possible' that it doesnt refer to DQ and instead they need to attack the changes completely and say it can't happen. Like, how low can you go to deny possibilities and need to shut all that down just because you can't face the chance that a series you dont know about would be in smash. Am I the only one who thinks that it's messed up? I try to let it aside because it's just what some people like to think about and it doesn't change things, but it's still annoying to see people do that kind of thing. It's not guaranteed to be erdrick. I hope that a few people come to their senses and can be open in general, and accept what nintendo has decided to do regardless. It's ok, and it's a game, and I'm sure lots of people will enjoy what they end up doing.
And that's about it. ;)

I mostly agree with your thoughts.

From my own experience, it feels as if people just saw the official art of Erdrick with the sword and blocked themselves into trying anything to “deny” his chances.
It’s something that the comunity definitely needs to get over with, since you can hardly bring up any character made in Japan who wields a sword since it mostly tends to end in tiring debates.

And yes, some even take it too far by making strechs with their arguments to keep the feeling of denial within themselves. It gets annoying, but with some time I managed to prevent those from happening frequently.

The thing that matters for us is that when Erdrick, Eight or other DQ heroes get in Smash... It will finally be over. We will finally be able to relax and enjoy the presence of DQ in Smash after years full of people dismissing the idea.
Patience will be key on this, but we will probably finish all of this soon.

On a more brighter note, I made this today which took some time to finish:
BFE90266-1851-4116-973D-4E443F0FD750.jpeg

I personally don’t mind the idea of Eight being one of Erdrick’s alts, so Erdrick can easily share the same slot as Eight in the picture.

The last spot however was the hardest to choose: it was between Spyro, Pauline, Steve and Banjo.

We dont know what'll happen, but let's say that yeah some things will be nice once things are actually confirmed and deconfirmed.
For your challenger pack, think there needs to be at least one gal somewhere ;p (i like pauline, tho i dunno for smash. What about captain syrup?)

Unrelated, and I've only watched a bit of Dai, but I thought this gif was cool. I'm guessing he's using Wind Sickles there?

Captain Syrup would be cool. And I am one who believes that Mach Rider may potentially be female due to certain official material related to Mach Rider.

The gif is great too.

It's kind of mindboggling how there are those that think brave is a huge stretch for DQ.

I keep debating over my friend group whether its going to be Sora or Erdrick that is going to make it as the square rep. I would be overjoyed with either and I think its going to come to down to those two in a deathbattle for the smash invitation.

Great points all around. Also, can’t forget about how Erdrick is apparently a character that everyone can see coming, but Geno and Sora would be a surprise that no one could forecast, the underdogs, etc.

Gimme a break, those two are overdogs if anything, and always have been since Brawl.

DQ just became a front runner due to the leak, but nobody would take you seriously for suggesting A DQ character prior to the leaks.

It only became this way because of the rumours. Plus I guarantee if it was the other way around they would be defending them like we would our reps. Difference is that we try to be respectful about it.

I keep debating over my friend group whether its going to be Sora or Erdrick that is going to make it as the square rep. I would be overjoyed with either and I think its going to come to down to those two in a deathbattle for the smash invitation.
Nah theyd shake hands

I heard there were some people somewhere saying crap against geno and other characters, including using erdrick (and probably other stuff) as a reason, so maybe there's some that aren't respectful, though I havent seen that myself. I'm not sure if they're DQ fans or if they just like to troll geno-kins and others tho. I think most of the problem is just people who're ass holes :p

I think Sora would actually be pretty hype for a lot of people. We don't really have anything that hints to sora, but anything's possible. I'm just really curious what they have in store for us, and Square Enix has so many cool characters. Fortunately for us Dragon Quest is huge in japan, so I really do think there's some good chances for dq :)

Best case scenario is just having both of them together lol.

I think Geno and all other characters with regular spirits of themselves or Assist Trophies aren't gonna happen in those 14 slots in the data. But, I have a strong feeling of plausibility in my Deluxe Edition theory. And think that those highly requested characters that could only make it as AT and Spirits will be the first in line. Isaac, Geno, Shantae, Skull Kid, Bomberman, Ashley, Shovel Knight and Dixie would be almost certainly(Don't know about Waluigi, looks like Sakurai just like the meme).
Also thinking about, if they make as much characters as the time to make a version like that leave(without needing to recode veterans or the other things) they could break the character records from Dragon Ball Tenkaichi 3.

To me, Geno is one of those "base roster or bust" type of characters. I don't think he's totally out of the running but I would wager the favorites for a SE rep are (in my opinion)

1. DQ character (Erdrick) - self explanitory. It has leaks, the Nintendo connection, the impact on video games etc etc to be in Smash. The only thing that would be holding it back from being in Smash is if Toriyama or Sugiyama want more than Nintendo is willing to shell out, and MAYBE if Sakurai gets cold feet from putting in a franchise that is very niche in the west as DLC. I don't think two is a problem because Persona is in and Persona sells on par with DQ post Squeenix merger in the west. if problem 1 is too much then I could see it going to...

2. Sora-Popular character, wouldn't be a problem to work with Disney (really, its not as bad as people think). Certainly would be the favorite in my mind if the DQ rumors weren't swirling.

3. Geno-Has a big online base, only problem to me is that it feels like if he were to be in by now... he'd be in by now. It's clear that Nintendo can get the rights for him, but he just is always moving to the backseat behind other characters. Arguably the most **** blocked character in Smash history at this point.

4. Another FF character - Don't see this happening at this point.

5. Lara Croft, Deus Ex protag, anything else.

I would say DQ has an 80% chance, Sora a 10% chance, Geno a 5% chance, and the other two a 2.5% chance.

That's been passed around.

I'm not gonna take Verge's word as any kind of guarantee, but he's another one on the pile, and the size of the pile makes me a little more optimistic.

There's both things in favor and going against geno, so I really dont know what his chances are. I think they're a little on the low side too just because it's about dlc and there's better choices business-wise, but we never know with sakurai and nintendo. I'm not counting on it, but who knows.

Papa Geno's is saying that Vergeben says that Erdrick is 100%. Thoughts?
Well it's interesting that he's covering it and giving it some weight. Not much more to say :p

you know if they do a collection of dragon quest games what would you guys want it to be like what's something that will make it a must buy for you guys. for me I would want the games to have options in the way they looked so if you wanted to play 1-4 NES style you could but also have the option for the ds styled graphics and having the orchestral soundtrack for all the games would be nice too I'm listening to 5s right now and it makes me sad i never got to hear it the way it should be, to be honest. but that's just me what about yall

DQ8 with the graphics and animations of the PS2 version plus the new stuff added on the 3DS port.

Also the Monster's Jokers games and the Erdrick trilogy remake from SNES.

It has different animations not present in the 3DS version (like Eight's transformation) and a different visual presentation.

I don't think any kind of complete series collection is very likely, but we'll probably start to get Switch/PC ports sooner or later. I could see the two trilogies getting bundles, maybe.

I'd love to see I-III redone in... what are Square Enix calling it, "2D HD"? The Octopath style, more or less. Get all of the best features from the SFC, GBC and mobile versions in there with the orchestral soundtracks and I think those games would be good basically forever. If that's not on the table, then the SFC versions with the mobile translations and updated menus would be good enough for me. Just, please, anything but the PS4/3DS versions.

Straight ports of the DS/mobile versions of IV-VI would basically be fine. Those versions are great, just rework the menus and remember to include IV's party chat and we're golden. The same pretty much goes for VII, the 3DS version is recent enough and good enough that it doesn't need much updating.

(I wouldn't mind if IV got a second pass on its localization to tone it down to sane levels, but that's unlikely)

VIII's complicated. I think it'd probably need the full HD treatment to do it justice, with graphics based on the PS2 version but all the extra features of the 3DS version. I wouldn't mind just a bit more extra content in there to integrate Red and Morrie a little better.

IX would absolutely need to be redone from scratch. The way it uses 3D models for the player characters and sprites for NPCs is extremely weird, and definitely wouldn't hold up on any modern console. A mobile version's supposed to be in the works, so a console port or remake seems doubtful anyway.
