This is why, if Erdrick is indeed the character they pick over someone like Luminary/Eight, that he would most likely be composite.

It's a good discussion. There's not much new that's brought up, but I've been craving Smash speculation for a good while, so it's nice to listen to people talk about it.

I feel like they were a little too dismissive of Slime, though. They went into that "Erdrick or Slime?" question in the title knowing their answer. They didn't talk much about other potential DQ reps, aside from a brief mention of the Luminary.

Speaking of which, I wanted to ask something as someone who's not overly familiar with Dragon Quest. Would there be any difference, gameplay-wise, between Erdrick and any other DQ protag, besides Madason?
Interesting to see some people can't get enough speculation :p

It's a good question, i think it really depends on how far someone would go to re-imagine the older heroes. Even just seeing Erdrick use gigagash is something new that they allowed, so anything's possible. They're definitely more alike than say FF protagonists.

Not all of the dragon quest heroes are the hero class, but when they arent it usually means they can class-change, which means being able to have a lot of skills anyway :p It might not be perfect tho like in DQ9 only mage learns the fire spells. You could technically equip mage with a sword if you max it out but you wouldnt be very strong. So I guess there'd be a few exceptions here and there, but they could be overlooked too.

Well with a character like Luminary, I personally find there wouldn't be much of a difference. The only real change is that Luminary can dual wield, wield greatswords and has more of an expansive skillset compared to DQ3 only Erdrick (Gigagash/Gigaslash didn't exist yet).

Luminary also has pep up, which is essentially Clouds limit in smash. Rather then Tension which is basically increased damage per charge. He also has exclusive abilities such as Quadraslash (giant sword falling from the sky) and splitter abilities which is essentially Getsuga Tenshou.

Can't speak for every other protagonist though,
Do you think they could do a Simon/Richter, and add a few of these traits (like Pep Up and Gigaslash) to Erdrick's kit? I've seen the idea of Erdrick getting sword/shield skills thrown around.

I mention this 'cause someone I know from a Discord server is saying Erdrick would be "the worst option for a DQ rep," and I wasn't sure if there was any other potential candidate who'd play drastically different, besides Slime.

Best scenario would be a hero with multiple alts. The most similar characters to Erdrick (ability and appearance-wise) would be the protagonists of 4, 6, 8, 11. The protagonist of 7 is a kid, sadly, so unless they age him he would be out. 9 doesn't have quite access to the Hero class, but have access to some of the abilities. And with 10, Anlucia should be the equivalent of the Hero class but game is Japan-only so its hard to say.

They've never been shy about reverse engineering newer abilities to older characters, like in the Heroes games. It could absolutely happen, and I would be surprised if it didn't to any extent.

Hey I was looking at quotes from the Fortune Street series, and there's a lot of references to erdrick on the Alefgard map.
They refer to the legendary hero being from there.

""Whoa! Alefgard! I want to meet the legendary dragon warrior Erdrick! But I forgot my camera! Wah-hah!" (Toad) "

and there's a lot more quotes too :p

I figured Waluigi being the true legendary hero would be common knowledge at this point, but I suppose not.

I actually havent played the series, but seems fun enough.

Yep. I've only ever managed to get together people for one game, cause it is a time commitment, but damn it's fun.

Because of the composite nature the character is most likely gonna have, if he gets the Simon/Richter treatment the most I can see is (if it's Erdrick/Luminary), one having tension and the other having pep up. Both are power up abilities but the former is a boost in attack power after a single attack ala incineroar while the latter is like Cloud's limit.

Simon and Richter play the same. I think he meant that they would pull from different games (like some abilities from erdrick and some from luminary) to put into one playstyle.

Even tho Tension isn't in dq3 or 11, it could still find its way onto a character. Especially if pep up would be too much like cloud's limit. S'all speculation of course :)

Pep is more like trance in FFIX, as it would boost the abilities of the protagonist until they run out of time or perform a special attack. Unless they make this an unique mechanic for the character, I expect it more to be something used in their Final Smash.

Cloud's limit does kinda work that way in smash, though i think there isn't (as much?) of a speed boost with it in ultimate. It's weird that they even put a boost with it, but yeah i think they're pretty good at making new moves, but im curious how they might do pep up in smash. I expected gigagash for a final smash. maybe with team mates or other heroes around.

It depends on what they want to do with FS, the way Pep works is that it activates a randomly during the battle. So translating it could mean either making it random as well (which is unlikely) or a bar that fills during the battle but you can't charge it like Cloud. I could imagine that depending on the focus they could make something like Max Tension Gigaslash or Pep activation plus a special version of Gigaslash for the Final Smash.

oh, i didnt think it was random. that's weird.

If that's the case i might prefer tension, but yeah there's various ways either could be in the game.
At this point I kinda think they might only put skills, and no mechanic like that. But if it'd be a boost like lucario has (and well done, not like smash 4), that could be cool as well. And if it's tension, it could go down once an attack or skill hits, or something like that.

It's Monopoly with stock markets and actual tax fraud. What's not to love?

Me: I love Fortune Street
Family: Ew Fortune Street

Ok then
Like Monopoly, Fortune Street's greatest challenge is actually finishing a game before your anguish kicks in and makes you quit playing. It's a mental sport.

That’s not the hard part...
The hard part is convincing them to take part period since they aren’t really a fan of monotonous games.

I do like monopoly, but it really is a game of chance. You kinda have to be detached and just enjoy gambling :p

If I ever find fortune street for cheap i'd get it. I'd definitely get the final fantasy x dragon quest ones if they came to the west :O

Board games can be a fun good time sometimes :)
If there was a better version of settlers of catan i'd even play that, i found it neat.

And with gambling also comes a copious amounts of cheating. I actually swapped properties without my friend knowing until the end of the game.

I typically don't in a lighthearted game but this was Monopoly. We were both sick of each other by the halfway mark.
:O
I think i get it,

I've changed a lot in the last years. In the past I dont think i cared as much for others' experiences. I want everyone to have a good time :)
That's one reason I want to find a lot more cooperative games. I had ideas for how that could look for a board game, and I did find some kiddy ones that had something like that, but nothing complex.

I try not to worry too much about it if im facing someone new in smash, but a part of me still feels like i dont want to go too hard on them, i want them to enjoy themselves too.

Yeah. I look at games with a mindset of "if the other person isn't having fun, then I'm not." As someone who had to teach their cousins how to play games, I don't get anything from steamrolling people with my preferred settings. I just enjoy the quality time.

I need to play more Co-op games, though. Those bring two or four people together. Games like Castle Crashers, Gunstar Heroes, or the first Borderlands brought me and my older brother together with teamwork. However, I've never heard of a Co-op boardgame. I think the closest thing is maybe Dungeons and Dragons, but some DnD official can inform me on that. Any ideas?

Yeah. I mean, i dont think we should limit our own fun if someone else is crabby or whatever, but now when i try to win it's to see how far i can go, not just to have it 'over' the other person.

There was one board game that was cool, i forget the name, but basically you have to work together with other people to reach the end of a map, and the map was made up of different tiles so each game could be different because you can put the tiles together in different ways. anyway, each tile had certain things, and your character could go to one place while someone else would go to another to try to get the right powers/items. There was a gimmick to moving around too, it made it interesting and puzzle-like.

anyway, yeah there are some here and there, but could be more, coop games are cool :)
dragon quest is a single player experience, but that's cool too. And dragon quest 9 (and monsters) did have multiplayer stuff which was a cool attempt. i guess mmos like 10 kinda count as well. it's really too bad we didnt get to play it.

As someone who didn't play DQ11, this artwork made me interested in the Luminary as a character (even if I know his twist).

I think I already breached that threshold weaks ago. At least we're near the end of the month. Things gonna start rollin' soon.
It's going to be a bit more interesting for persona fans first tho.

So, Cadence of Hyrule was announced in that Nindies Showcase. Funny thing is, an eShop exclusive 2D Zelda was one of Vergeben's predictions.

The Link's Awakening blunder was one of the biggest blows to his credibility in recent memory, so this hopefully clears that up.
Yea, he actually said that his source mistake the announcement as was another eShop-only Zelda related that will come out before the Awakening's remake, but I remember that he at one point stated that was Awakening related before this equivocated assumption.
Also Pikmin 3 port and Metroid Trilogy looks like leak bait just like StarFox GP was recently confirmed as.(But unlike SFGP, I think they can indeed be real, but are been used for now as leak bait.)

I am tempted to pick Dragon Quest 1 for IOS now that I have 10€ for the App Store.

Should I pick it or wait for the day I pick another gift card to afford DQ3?
