Actually, the ground that Richmond stands on would liquefy, and the shakes won't be AS bad.
That said, there's likely to be mass drowning, and, depending on how good of a shield Vancouver Island is, mass flooding.
Once again, that being said.. I can't imagine any place in the lower mainland being much safer than any other place. An Earthquake of that magnitude and survival all comes down to chance. ie. Are you near a strong and sturdy table that is not in a tall builng, that is high up in elevation, and in a spot where the ground won't open up from under you? It's sorta hard to control all of these factors, so anybody saying "haha Richmond is screwed", all I have to say is "****, we're all screwed".
