The 1st SWF Spriting Tournament

INTRODUCTION

This is the 1st Annual SWF Spriting Tournament, hosted, judged, and run by none other than myself, Meta-Kirby. With the recent talk of a Poke Center "stimulus" package, many new tournament threads have popped up. However, many of the Poke Center regulars are not battlers; for all of those out there who feel this way, this is for you! Spriting is a big part of the Poke Center. If you don't know what spriting is, this contest is not for you. Let's have fun, build friendships, attract new spriters, and show off some amazing sprites!

RULES

  1. There will be 11 entrants to this tournament.
  2. Each round, you will be given a topic and have to compete against all of your fellow spriters.
  3. You have 5 days to complete your sprite for each round. No exceptions.
  4. To minimize the risk of no-shows, you must have at least 150 posts on the Smash World Forums to participate in this contest. If you do not, you are not allowed to participate.
  5. If you fail to enter a sprite within the 5 day period, you are automatically disqualified. No exceptions, and no complaining.
  6. I'm going to need one or two more judges for this contest. If you are interested in being a judge, please send me a PM with examples of your spriting work. Note: If you are accepted as a judge, you are NOT allowed to compete in the tournament.
  7. Each round, the other judges and myself will judge sprites based on a variety of factors, including creativity, originality, quality of work, and difficulty of the sprite attempted.
  8. After the judges have finished judging, the results will be posted. The competitor with the lowest total points will be eliminated.
  9. Feel free to comment on each other's sprites, but do not use these comments to predict a winner or shoot down someone else's entry. There is no changing once you post your entry.
  10. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Place finishers will receive a Pokemon Contest-esque Ribbon as a reward for accomplishing their feats. If a judge feels it neccesary, complementary ribbons will be distributed to those who are deserving.
  11. Each week, we will incorporate a new "theme" for each group.
  12. Please do not complain if you are eliminated from the contest. I am checking the apititude of the judges so that I may gather the best of the best to judge. Trust me, we know good sprites from mediocre sprites.
  13. This contest is meant to be fun, please try and make the thread as friendly as possible. No bashing, bad-mouthing, complaining, sabotaging, or off-topicness in the thread.
  14. If you wish to sign up, please write "I wish to sign up for this tournament, and I like eggs." in your post. This lets me know that you have read the rules and are willing to participate.

I'm glad someone is running a spriting contest. This sounds like a good opportunity for all spriters on SWF to show us their talents.

I wish to sign up for this tournament, and I like eggs.

Make one of the themes "Gardevoir-isk" or something like that. MK, you do some of your best work with Gardevoir :). I'll be cheering whoever on. I'd help judge, but I don't sprite XD.

and now spriting contests (like pokemon contests in games) lol

im normally not a spriter, but i would like to enter and give it a shot. i have a lil experience in this sort of stuff from making games, so i dont think il do too bad.

Hey, thanks guys!

Just an FYI, I may not respond directly to your posts, but if you sign up, your names are being added to the first post as soon as I see your post.
Once we have our 16 competitors, we will start the competition.

Also, I'd like to introduce our new judge: FirustheHedgehog. He is the famous creator of the Custom Pokemon Shop and he makes amazing sprites, so he will be on the lookout for some great work from the competitors!

I'd like to enter, but I reckon competition would be fierce...

Maybe I should just apply to judge it...

I can't wait to see what cool sprites come out of this one, I am not entering, scince all I can do is re-color, and well I can't be a judge based on the rules, best of luck to whoever enters.

It sounds fun, what can I say?

Alright guys, here is the situation!

We need 6 more people to have 16 people. If we DO get 16 people, the contest is going to run like it is in the rules.

However, I'm starting to doubt that we will get 16 people.

If we do NOT get 16 people, I will limit the contest to 12. Instead of being split into groups every round, it is every man for him/herself, and one competitor will be eliminated each week. Yes, it will take a bit longer, but hey, it's gonna be funnnnnn!

What do you guys think? Do you agree with this plan? It's just an emergency back-up plan. If you guys know any spriters, PLEASE ENCOURAGE THEM TO SIGN UP!

THE FIRST ROUND HAS BEGUN!

In honor of the release of Pokemon Platinum, the 1st Round is a simple (or not?) recolor of Giratina in it's Origin Form:

GOOD LUCK COMPETITORS!

Can I still join?
Yes. You are going to be the 11th competitor. Check your PM's for the first round information!

All of you are encouraged to post your sprites ahead of the scheduled time. Just have them in by Sunday at Midnight (EST)

Please do not critique any of the sprites that are posted for the competition. This prevents bias, sabatoge, and unfair judging.
I was going to post my sprite here, but this rule is ridiculous. Contests such as WWYP have been going on for a few years and allow critique and comments from the community before judging and I have heard nothing of sabotage. If you think you'll have a problem with bias and unfair judging, then you don't know Firus or Spire very well... they are the last two people I would suspect of that.

So can you please get rid of that rule? I think letting us post sprite here for critiques and then requiring all final versions being submitted on final date will work better.

I seem to have overlooked that rule. Yeah MK, that's ridiculous. We need to discuss the rules.

Well, I'm done with my recolor. Maybe we should just PM MK the sprites and he can post them on the last day?

I like the idea of critiquing, but I suppose we can hold it off til the last day. Go ahead and PM them to him.

No, I think I may have phrased it wrong. The only thing I don't want people doing is something like "Well, obviously Person A is going to win. Person B's sprite is horrible".
I put all my trust in the judges, they are excellent spriters and they know their facts.
The only contest experience I have had is at Serebii, and I just took some of the rules from there and applied it here. On Serebii, you can't get critique because you can make threads dedicated soley to the critique of your sprites.
Nevertheless, you are COMPLETELY correct, Skyler, I will change the rule. I'm sorry that it sounded off-base. :)

I will change the rule.
Everyone, please post your sprites in this thread for the contest. I am changing a rule and it will go into effect immediately.

EDIT: Rule Changed in the OP.

Feel free to comment on each other's sprites, but do not use these comments to predict a winner or shoot down someone else's entry. There is no changing once you post your entry.

Time for my entry.

Although the Pokemon series seems as though it is growing annualy, that is no excuse for us to not go back a generation or two and remember the the games of the past that many of us grew up with. Face it, if you go here, you've known the series for a while. I hope to achieve some degree of nostalgia with this sprite, G/S/C Giratina.

This is awesome. And seeing as how 4th Gen runs // to 2nd Gen, this is very appropriate.

Why yes...yes, this does bring back a lot of nostalgia. 2nd gen was definitely my favorite time period for Pokemon, so I give personal kudos for you doing this. It definitely made my day. :)

This is all making me want to pick up spriting more and more, but I have a Mac and don't know of any proper programs that I can run to start in on such a venture that would be rather cheap for me to do. D:

He doesn't get a special name, like that stuck up GSC Giranta fellow. What a jerk he is!

And yes, I know, white background.

Appears to me as a Giratina fueled by some sort of otherwordly (ha!) electric fire substance [run-on] stuff. If I could label his types, it'd be either Steel, Fire, Psychic, Eletric, or Ghost. But nice job man, the blue parts are the strongest as they've the most variation in shades, yet still contrast evenly with the metallic surface of his serpentine body. If the purple "glowed" a bit more, it'd be much stronger.
