SWF, what other Forums think about us.

That's odd. I think other Forums would look up to/admire things about Smashboards. Hell, I even have SWF as my clan tag when playing COD. I think highly of it at least. The most trash talk I've heard about it is that the Mods are too strict. But that's just them. (:p)

You still have to be skilled to win with your character no matter which mu. It's no way an automatic win just because a character has an MU advantage over another.

And Falco/Sheik/Peach/Jiggs.

Here I thought the other game forums either were mixed or didn't care. :/

I also thought they teased the site for it's crashes, hence the term Crashboards.

From what I've seen, people at SRK and Dustloop are pretty hostile towards us. I think I remember something about allegations of us trolling their forums or something.

Edit: I could be wrong, its a long time since I looked on those sites. Its not as if I was a regular there, anyways.

Other competitive communities are just as ignorant about Smash's depth as a casual/non-gamer. The only difference is that they are aware of the tournament scene, which - combined with their ignorance - causes tension because they don't see the depth. They see a cartoon game with dumb characters being played in tournaments.

Just so you know why fighting game forums avoid being like Smash Boards, it is because they try to add skill to the game by removing variables and calculating everthing into an almost exact science. Now this actually does two things, neither of which adds skill. Removing Variables makes things predictable which actually removes a nessecity for skill and calculating everything means everyone makes descision purely off of statistics which in turn leads to excessive counter picking and small chracter pools. This has resulted in Smash Brothers tournaments being the following formula-> Fox vs Fox on Final Destination. Not very fun i can tell you.
My eye, it can't stop twitching.

Super Smash Bros. has been taken seriously longer than a lot of those other games so they have no right to talk. If Smash doesn't take much skill then why do I keep losing?

Because you play Ike, bro.

Anyways, it's sad how ignorant people are, but hey it can go both ways. I remember on MLG some guy was talking about how much hype Brawl got then went on to say "For all you Melee diehards, give Brawl a chance, you wont be disappointed"

**** I love people.

Whoever started the whole "tourny***" thing has obviously never been to a good tournament. At my locals we fool around as often as we can, playing friendlies with double ganondorf teams that are texture hacked to look like Billy Mays. Furthermore, many people remark that the smash scene is one of the most friendly and personable competition scenes they've ever known. It's not really so cold and callous as they seem to think. I personally love the richness added to the game by having a complex system of hard, soft, theoretical, and personal counters. As long as people understand that the actual numbers are just guesswork, there's no problem.

I have never heard "DOES NOT COMPUTE! The Matchup Charts according to Smash World Forums established that Lucario has a 40:60 matchup against Metaknight! You must have cheated to win! There is no other logical calculatable conclusion!!!!!!", and if I did, I'd smack a *****.

As for no items..... whatever. It's nice to be able to take a luck factor out of the game. Also, given that Smash Bros. was intended for casual play, you really can't blame us.

Of course. Because making something more random makes it more skillful. It's not like professional sports organizations ever try to standardize their fields/arenas or anything. That would make the sport less skillful.

They see a cartoon game with dumb characters being played in tournaments.
Yeah. But that's pretty much all fighting games. They're all cartoony and dumb.

And we love 'em anyway.

I love how Fox VS. Fox on Final Destination is still considered to be the general view of competitive smash.

Come on guys, that was like, nine years ago.

But yeah, it's funny how they're talking about Dissidia like it's more blanced than Smash.

Dissidia has way to many variables to be considered non balanced. It has different move-sets, MILLIONS of accessory and weapon/armor combination's. Unless you decide that you play naked, (no accessories weapons, or armor.) you can't really make match-ups on anyone.

I really didn't like how ignorant they were being, but what can you do?

Does anyone have had an experience on another Forum where they showed dislike for SWF?
It was on Soul Calibur forum in their tier list. A discussion became heated and someone said "Ok guys, stop it, we're turning into Smashboards!!!". They immediatly stopped too .

I understand him though.

It's one of those "you either get it or you don't" kind of things and, unfortunately, the number of people who don't get is bigger and more diverse when it comes to competitive Smash Bros. Usually the main arguements I see are:

1. "They've taken a kids' game and made it considerably more complicated."
2. "The game mostly stars cartoony characters, how can anybody play it seriously?"
3. "Banning stages and items, only playing stock matches, and playing 1 on 1/2 on 2 take away from how the game was intended to be played."
4. "Tiers keep people from playing who they really want to play as."
5. "They're trying way too hard to make Smash Bros competitive."

You have casuals who see competitive gaming as "oppressive" and "constrictive", you have competitives who see Smash Bros as too "kiddy" to be taken seriously, and so on and so forth. You have a lot of different opinions flying around from both gaming camps explaining why a lot of people "don't get" competitive Smash Bros.

He's right in what he said, you just don't favor what he said. Handling luck, using luck in your favor is a competitive skill.
Smash DOES have a small pool of fighters. No Melee tournament can compare to the diversity in the roster that you would see at, say a Guilty Gear or SFIV tournament. If I remember correctly, SBO Grand finals was Rufus against C. Viper, whose the dead bottom of mid tier. That's similar to seeing a Mario in grand finals. Melee has boiled down to essentially 5-6 charecters, with others showing up rarely such as Dr. Mario, Ganon, and Samus. Litterally anyone can win a tournament in SFIV, except for Dan.
We DO seek to add skill to the game by removing variables that don't fit our subjective definition of competitive.

Super Smash Bros. has been taken seriously longer than a lot of those other games so they have no right to talk.
What are you talking about? Longer than SFII? Longer than KoF? Longer than McC2? I'm sorry, but this is simply FAR from truth. People have been playing competative games since before Smash existed.

The thing with Random Variables in smash is that they are grotesquely broken. Dealing with random events is one thing(I play pokemon >.>) but with things like Heart Containers, Starmen, exploding capsules, Proximity Mines, it makes sense to remove them. Stages too. You can only adapt to so much before you go from playing a game of skill to a game of roulette.

So, i just read an old conversation about this kind of stuff on Dustloop. Apparently, some people dislike the smash community because they think that the pros will only play bad players if they pay the pros money. That we have an elitism thing going on.

The only thing I could think of this applying to would be MM's.

Yeah but lots of other fighting game communities do MM's, hell I'd wager there are a lot more SF and MvC2 elitists out there than Smash elitists.

I said longer than some of them. Either way their communities must have problems too. But we are too mature to make fun of them. plus ZSS does not equal kiddie. ;)

The reason they call Smash kiddie is because in comparison they are. Street Fighter players are full grown men most of the time. 23s-30. The average smash player is, what, 19?
