Wolf was never planned for Melee actually.
Sorry.
Considered is the better word.
As the Fox Clone that Falco ended up being.
But Wolf was too similar.

Double edit: this appearently says what I believed was utter garbage. THERE I GO BLINDLY LINKING IT AGAIN.
Well... weird. Nobody's called me out on this.
"Waifus" was not why Awakening is popular the way it was. It was a very accessible title for many people due to the permadeath (which was a huge barrier) mechanic being optional. Along with the fact they used things that helped familiarity to further make the game more attractive to customers (such as the many references to Marth, who was popular among Smash fans).
I knew sooo many people that tried Fire Emblem after Smash Bros and were turned off due to the difficulty and the permdeath feature. But that barrier is now gone. The whole waifu aspect may have helped sales a bit, but I don't think it was the most successful part of the game.
And complaining about fanservice waifu stuff does not equate to being elitist. Come on now.
This. It was debunked and PushDustIn has never found anything about Wolf being planned for Melee. It was sourced from a GAF post that had no proof.
I was simplifying it by a FAR margin.
The Persona series gave you more involved characters, a unified story that did more than a varied retelling of the Law-Neutral-Chaos set up, eventually grew to stop using the arcaic Demon Contracting system, etc. etc.
By no means was "waifuism" the selling point for Awakening, but it WAS one of the biggest complaints you heard in the community against it, and ESPECIALLY in what we saw early on with Fates. It was just a kind of similar tale between the two that I found hilarious, in a way, that we saw in the "crossover," which ended up as a proper blending of the two instead of mashing two series together and seeing what bits fall in place.
Edit:
Pet peeve of mine but it kinda bothers me seeing people refer to #FE as SMT X FE still.
They dropped the crossover aspect ages ago, even the last trailer called it "Atlus x Fire Emblem". Nintendo's been pushing it as an FE title developed by Atlus, but it's no crossover (bar some references).
I am sorry.
I just feel bad using a # when it IS the sharp symbol which is different and I don't have ready access too... so until it gets AN ENGLISH TITLE it's just been my go-to
