Super Mario Sunshine

One of my favorite platformers, a great game for Mario in my opinion. I found myself playing this dozens of times over when I was a bit younger. In fact, I dare say this is my favorite Mario game.

Anyone else enjoy this?

Looking back on it, Sunshine probably is my favorite Mario game. The FLUDD was such a fun game mechanic, and I'm really sad that there's been nothing quite like it to come out since Sunshine :(

If only this game got the reception of Galaxy, then there might've been a sequel, which would've been great.

It's not traditional mario, but I like it all the same. But, then again, Nintendo has to try super hard to screw up a mario game.

I just found this to be really upbeat and made me smile whenever I played it. I could explore for hours and enjoyed trying to find all the secrets alone.

I could have gone with less red coin missions but I don't mind. A sequel for this would be fantastic.

Wow the nostalgia. Always loved Sunshine, probably even more than Super Mario 64. Closest I've ever gotten to 100%ing a game, and I got 116 shines before getting to a Blue Coin that froze my game every time I got it. :urg:

I'm kind of indifferent to this game. I mean it's fun and everything, but why does Yoshi die in water? I just never got that.

This. I think I would spend hours in the main plaza alone. Probably the most fun to explore out of all 3 3D platformers. I also enjoyed that the game didn't have a ton of levels and instead focused on the ones it did have. It allowed for a lot more depth within the stages.

Because otherwise, you could get into spots you normally could not without a certain nozzle. Slight game mechanic they threw in.

I've noticed the music doesn't get mentioned much, but Sunshine gave us some great stuff.

Oh, definitely. Particularily a fan of the Special Stage Theme (Platforms A Plenty, I think is the offical title?)

@Reaper: Dude, gamefaqs? Or are you bent on finding it yourself just so you can say you did?

Well, I do agree that it was a bit necessary, but...water? I mean since Super Mario World Yoshi doesn't die in water. The water isn't toxic because Mario swims in it. Ah well, it's not enough to make the game bad, it just puzzled me.

EDIT: Discussing Sunshine music, huh? This is probably still my favorite:

Such a cool mix of old and new.

Good job repeating the same music as above!

The yoshi bit is to make some bits harder. That island level that you need yoshi to get to is ridiculusly hard without swimming in water, but with water. I'd also bet it would have to do with mario swimming on Yoshi. Seriously, how would they animate that?

Blue skies, a topical holiday resort, Sunshine had a fantastic hub. It was much more challenging then Galaxy which was nice. Although I hated the blue coins idea though, still stuck on 119 shines because of them.

And this.

This is my favorite Mario game to date. I don't know I just loved the levels and overall gameplay.

The level with the shell people (Forget what it was called) was my favorite level <3

This game was well known to be the "Least polished" Mario game to date. I dont know what they are talking about, but I assume that they mean "glitchy."

Hit me with rotten tomatoes and lettuce if this makes you mad. I like this game a heck of a lot better than Mario 64.

Look, I'm sorry, alright? I just do. Perhaps it's the tropical paradise atmosphere that I tend to enjoy, or the extremely fun level-design. I just love it. For some reason, I couldnt get into Mario 64 (This isnt the typical "I played Sunshine before I played 64" kind of thing, I actually played 64 first). It just didnt feel very "Mario" to me.

Well, Jabberwokcy, the reason why you liked it more is becuase it's BETTER than Mario 64 was. More variety to the levels, better design, easier to figureout what the flying fork you're supposed to be doing, it was just all around BETTER.

Super Mario Sunshine wasn't nearly that glitchy, the most game-breaking glitches required powerups to be taken to sections of the level not intended for them, such as the invisible wall ten stories above the highest mountain in Gelato beach or turboing into the sewer grate on Ricco Harbour. The Gelato beach "foot imprint" glitch was pretty awesome though, since you could see the whole island using it.

And Super Mario 64 had way more glitches than Super Mario Sunshine . . . . if they were referring to glitches, either that or when they said "least polished" they were referring to the "exotic" music style that Koji Kondo tried for this game, which is an unfair statment since the music was very good if you stopped to listen to it. So what if Mr. Kondo usually writes songs that are catchy, upbeat, and make you hyper (in a good way)? is there anything wrong with him writing something relaxed for a game about a vacation? And yeah, I sort of agree Super Mario 64 wasn't very "Mario-ish". It could have easily been a generic 3D-platformer if they swapped the common characters out with different models, although Super Mario 64 Ds made it more Mario-esque with the powerups.

I thought Mario 64 was extremely "Mario-ish".
O__o

Am I not seeing something that you guys are? lol

I still enjoyed Sunshine more though.
I think I might start playing it today actually.

mario-ish? what the-

We've went from a 2-D sidescroller to a freaking 3-D game with the innovative camera style (at the time)!

mario 64 > super mario sunshine

but I do have nostalgic memories playing super mario sunshine, it's really good but I wouldn't say it's better than super mario 64

It's all a manner of taste, I reckon. I just didnt enjoy 64 as much as Sunshine.

Sunshine was very mold-breaking. In amongst the normal level-jumping and star collecting, there was a conducive story (Far more elaborate than any other official Mario games) and used the power of the "FLUDD." I love games that try and break away from the norm.

One teeny thing I didnt enjoy that much was the voice acting. Dont get me wrong: I loved almost every voice in the game. In fact, I think most of the characters kept the same voice actors in other games. But the one voice I hated was... Bowser's. :dizzy:

He sounded fat.

haha I agree 100% with this.
I was playing today and realized how bad it really was. I only liked Peach's voice for some reason. Maybe because it suits her as a character lol

I feel depressed I traded this game, and I've lost contact with the guy I traded it with.

I'm gonna cry in a corner now..:(

I liked it I guess, but I didn't think it was as good as Super Mario 64 / Galaxy.
Something about F.L.U.D.D. annoyed me, and it wasn't his voice.

I thought Turbo F.L.U.D.D. was cool though.

Besides the blue coin collection mission (which I didn't like that much, mainly because I was hoping for more levels rather than it), Sunshine is one of my favorite games.

Galaxy easily blew it away, but I can easily say that Sunshine did the same to 64. Tons of fun with this game. I'm still trying to 100 percent it just like with the rest of the trilogy. I think the only problem I'll have is the blue coin stuff as of now, which in itself isn't proving to be too tedious at least. It's a little fun at some points. I just wish I did them while playing through the game rather than waiting at the last minute when I decided to 100 percent it.

I will easily say it has the best HUB world of all the 3d mario games. Galaxy's sucked, and 64's felt empty. Sunshine's hub world felt like it was worth 2 worlds at times.

So let's talk about how scary the eel in Noki Bay was

It might be my least favourite mission in any Mario stage ever.
omg thiiiiiiiiss!
First time I faced it I screamed haha

On another note, I was playing this last night and I rage quit.

._________.

It was that stupid *** level in the harbor place, you know the last episode where you use Yoshi and jump from platform to platform?
GOD!

I swear I was at it for more than 35 minutes. I'd get so close and then fall into the water and lose yoshi. Then I'd have to swim alllllllllll the way back and find the right fruit to hatch yoshi again.

Last time I played the game I beat that level on the first or second try..........

Stupidest level in the game by far >:[

I have fond memories of Ricco Harbor because of the music only lol...

I vaguely remember what you're talking. I also remember being very bad at Blooper Surfing.

Rico harbor was the most agrivating stage int Sunshine. Every single shine took waaaaay too much work to get and that ****ing instant death blooper surfing **** was bull****
Yessssss! I agree 100% haha
I was decent at blooper surfing. Although, when I did the surfing for red coins episode, I'd get all 8 and die going for the shine........
Happened at least 3 times the other day.

*rages*

But like T-Block said, the music was legit.

It took me seven years to find the very last blue coin, which required a Rocket Nozzle just to even see in the wall. Found all the others within the first three months though (sans a second "lost" coin which was hidden in a wall you had to spray with no indicators on it at Ricco Harbor, but that was still not quite as hard to find as the Noki Bay one that I just wrote about.)

I remember lending this game to my neighbor along with Melee a couple years ago.

His house was then robbed.

I got back Melee; still haven't gotten another copy of Sunshine.

Such a good game.
