They did learn a bit by using code names instead of the actual names. Like, if Joker wasn’t revealed, would you have thought that “Jack” was somehow connected to Joker? Or if Erdrick and DQ wasn’t talked about as much as it did, people would be having flame wars on what “Brave” is supposed to mean.

The only reason why we know who they are is because of background information (or in Joker’s case, a straight up reveal). We simply connected the dots on what we know so far.

So unless if they get leaked, or their codename is pretty straight forward, we may have a tougher time with the other upcoming characters.

Names got figured out quickly, guessing 'em shouldn't be that much of a problem, unless there's really no rumour or trust-worthy leaker that could give us some backup on the next three characters.

He is a character. A character a lot of us love for a lot more reasons then "he's the underdog for Smash" because he's SO much more then that.

Not gonna lie, man. A DQ Character is better for Geno in the long run as Geno was never going to be the 1st or 2nd SE rep. SE's now got their big dogs out of the way. It's a much better negotiation tool than you seem to realize.

When they say hiiroo(ヒーロー), that's more like DC/Marvel kind of hero.
You see why My Hero Academia is not titled as "Boku no Eiyuu/Yuusha Akademia" but "Hiiroo(Hero) Akademia" in original Japanese now?

DQ heroes were always been shujinkou(protagonist) by the officials but at the same time some of them were also referred as yuusha(the brave) since DQ1.
In many DQ games, yuusha is not something super special that only the protagonist can be.
DQ3's protagonist has yuusha as his job but there are other yuusha like his father and Simon of Samanao. Even one of ministers says there are many yuusha in that world.
It's a spoiler but in the end of the game, the king acknoledge the protagonist as Makoto no Yuusha(まことの勇者) or the real/true brave and give him the title of Roto(Erdrick) in accordance with their legend. Hence DQ3 hero became Roto no Yuusha(ロトの勇者) or the brave of Roto.

But the term yuusha became so known since DQ3's massive success in Japan, so it's used to describe certain type of protagonists and became so common especially in literatures with JRPGish fantasy stories nowadays.
If you are familiar with anime/manga/light novel genre, then have you heard of Maoyu/Archenemy and Hero? The original Japanese name is called Maoyuu Maou Yuusha(まおゆう魔王勇者).
How about Yuki Yuna is a Hero? The original name is Yuuki Yuuna wa Yuusha dearu(結城友奈は勇者である).
Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari(盾の勇者の成り上がり) or The Rising of the Shield Hero. The anime is coming out soon.
Also the term Maou(魔王) became common thanks to DQ just like yuusha. It's often translated as the demon lord/king. Anyone like Hataraku Maou-sama(はたらく魔王さま) or The Devil Is a Part-Timer?

Iv heard from a commenter on Youtube that the codeword Brave could also be referencing Yuri Lowell from Tales of Versperia, as one of the guild's from Versperia is known as Brave Versperia.

Thank you very much for your input. I do not think people realize just what kind of legacy and impact the Dragon Quest series has had not only on RPGs, not only on gaming, but on culture as a whole. Much like Castlevania before it (which most of the "core" Smash Bros. fanbase barely asked for and talked about as well), Dragon Quest certainly deserves a place within Smash Bros. for its legacy alone.

Datamine from https://twitter.com/jam1garner/status/1080961830825193473 indicates that a character with the codename brave is DLC which seems to indicate that the character is a DQ protagonist.

Datamine revealed 3 codenamed placeholder pieces of data. 2 for the ones we already know, and a last one named Brave. People seem to think this refers to Erdrick or another DQ character, and Ayumi's post goes into good detail about the linguistics of it all.

I think I understand whats going on, from what I have heard there have been datamining and the code word Brave has appeared. People are associating this with Erdrick. Also leaks from various sources seem to support the idea that it is him that will be our Square rep. So all together it does seem that Erdrick is our rep. Im still cautious on this as I feel Square can throw us a major curve ball, and fool all of us. Also like I stated above the code word Brave could be referencing Yuri Lowell from the Tales series, and it would make sense given his game is coming to the Switch in 8 days. All of it really fascinating, hopefully we will get some information that really solidifies who the character is.

The evidence is them having him as an internal leak. He's on the Squenix 7 list. I think this should be enough.

Agree, but I would not put it past Nintendo and Square to do so. I still feel the fact we know so much about the Square rep this time around seems really odd. Its almost like they are intentionally not being careful, which leads me to believe it may all be a misdirection. Hopefully we will soon find out, and we can finally know for sure who the Square rep is.

Also update on 2B in Soul Calibur 6, it seems she only came with one piece of music. This does not bode well for any Square rep in Smash. I hate to say it, but its likely we will get 2-3 songs with whatever Square character it is. Its unfortunate, but I don't see Square giving more music than 2-3 songs especially if Sugiyama is involved.

That sucks my friend, hope you feel better. And yes its interestinfg many are jumping on the Erdrick train for the code word Brave, but it also makes a lot of sense for Yuri. His game will be on the Switch before Dragon Quest 11, and it really makes sense Bandai Namco will get another rep. Out of all the 3rd party companies that are in Smash, Bandai Namco make the most sense out of all of them to get another rep due to how much they helped in development. Also if Im not mistake Yuri is more popular than Lloyd in Japan, and with his game coming on the Switch it might be a perfect opportunity to put him in Smash.

Its very interesting to see which way all of this will go, personally even if I don't get Sora I am very excited for whoever gets announced.
