Sorry kids, here's why Geno won't get in. The good news? Krystal might.

Square was behind SMRPG, Nintendo gave them characters and Square did most of the work.
The Paper Mario series is thought of as a spiritual successor to SMRPG but only because they are both RPG.

Similar to Goldeneye/PerfectDark.

Regardless of who the mastermind was, this gave Nintendo ideas and experience in making Mario RPGs, and thus was the cause for the first paper maio games.

yes but usually companies only spend money on things they know they can get money from (i.e. getting sonic and snake in brawl) not something that could possibly flop and get them no extra money. With the lack of geno appearences in recent years you have to admit that there is a possibility that not that many gamers in todays world know who he is and will not be drawn to buy the game because of him. If nintendo is going to spend money to get a character they will spend it on a character well known even by casual gamers.
Would casual gamers know who Pit was if not in SSB? How about Game & Watch or the Ice Climbers? Definently not, if anything, if not mentioned in SSB, alot more people would know Geno than either of those choices, besides probably Pit.

Brawl wouldn't flop with Geno. Brawl would never flop due to one character's addition; if anything this could be an open door for so many more business opportunities to come. They could make much more monetary gain if Geno was reintroduced in even more games after Brawl, using SSBB as sort of a door to advertise him.

By the way, Sonic and Snake, even if popular today, are VERY old characters. In fact, they are extremely old characters. Their popularity today isn't what guarantees them a place in Brawl's roster, it's their past. The only reason Geno hasn't been making appearances, is because of Square and Nintendo's dispute. If there were a SMRPG sequel, chances are, we'd still be seeing him in games today. If Sonic and Snake hadn't have made lots of appearances over the years, chances are they'd still be able to make it, reguardless of their appearances, kind of like Pit and Ice Climbers.

To respond to what Pieman said:

Cloud barely makes the requirement as it is. His only appearance on a Nintendo platform was a summon in Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories. A couple of years later, SE released Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Cut which included a 3D version of CoM. What does that mean? It means that Cloud and Sora weren't truely part of a Nintendo exclusive and their inclusion would basically be a contradiction. You may argue that Snake barely qualifies either but at least he stars in an exclusive title on the GBC and has had several games on Nintendo platforms dating back to the NES. (Wasn't Snake Eater a Nintendo exclusive too?)

Also, Geno could easily pay for himself with the sales of SMRPG on the virtual console. It's currently the most wanted VC game in both North America and Japan and because of its age, it'd barely cost anything to upload onto the Wii Shop service. Pair that with the fact that Geno's cost is trivial compared to someone like Cloud's and you have someone that could easily pay for himself within a single week. (Assuming that most people download certain VC games on the day they come out.)

Geno isn't going to be in Brawl. It's like me saying that II Piantissimo from Mario Sunshine may have a chance, then everyone agrees and he gets on the poll. Or Professor Oak or something. It won't happen.

I truly do hate when people make bland statements without facts to back it up.
Any evidence to support your claims?

Er.... Geno > the minor character from sunshine....

Many old gamers will recognize geno. Many new gamers will come to appreciate him.

Sakurai has shown much interest in him. He deserves to be brought back into the spotlight.

How do his chances compare with anyone from sunshine but the major 5 characters in it.

(Yoshi, Mario, Peach, Bowser Jr., Bowser.)

Yes SMRPG.. Not geno.

True, but him actually being inn could increase sales
Barely, if at all.

Most of the time any game that Nintendo Announces for the VC becomes "The most wanted VC game" so that has nothing to do with it... plus the game has gone gold already which means this will not effect his inclusion.

Yes SMRPG.. Not geno.

But Geno had alot to do with how popular it was

Barely, if at all.

All the older gamers could not have been interested in SSBB and hear Geno is in and want it

Most of the time any game that Nintendo Announces for the VC becomes "The most wanted VC game" so that has nothing to do with it... plus the game has gone gold already which means this will not effect his inclusion.

It could go platinum

There is a bold button, but if you don't know just use then [/b ] <= no space

On Topic:
I don't think geno himself influenced whether or not someone bought the game. (Im sure it was mario)

To go gold means the game is in printing making multiple copies to be shipped to stores and then sold. So if you were serious... there.

Thanks, and no I was just kidding about the platinum
On topic: Some people are like that, you'd be amazed at how many people would/wouldn't play if he was/wasn't in

Yes SMRPG.. Not geno.
Yes Geno, who played a big role in how the SMRPG panned out and was vital to the plot and storyline.

Barely, if at all.
Says you, a non-Geno fan. For all the SMRPG fans, it could boost sales tremendously.

Most of the time any game that Nintendo Announces for the VC becomes "The most wanted VC game" so that has nothing to do with it... plus the game has gone gold already which means this will not effect his inclusion.
A game on the VC has no effect on a character being in a game whatsoever. SMRPG could come out on the VC next year, but Geno could've made it in the game several months ago.

Your logic is off, Geno has a chance.. just not a big one.
Says you, he has a good chance if you consider it.

Yeah, too bad Nintendo hasn't offically announced SMRPG for the VC thus killing your logic entirely. The arguement was that Geno wouldn't be able to pay for himself because SMRPG was released 11 years ago. The problem with this arguement is SMRPG has yet to be released on the VC. There's also the fact that the money made selling VC games is almost entirelly profit. Why? 1. There's no development cost. 2. No cartridges or discs have to be made. 3. Advertsing isn't needed. 4. The only thing that really needs to be paid for is the right to to upload the game on the VC and sell it which is, once again, a cost that's laughably small and is one of the reason's why VC games cost only a fraction of their original cost.
My response in red.

Ok I'm back.

To cover some of the points I've read:

1) You must be kidding yourself if you don't think Geno has a good fanbase. I know he does, because I always see mention of him in every single Smash board I've been to. The fact that he was recommended 4 times in the polls should be proof enough of how popular he is.

2) Whether or not Geno appears, SSBB will sell. It wouldn't cost Sakurai much to put a character SE doesn't even use and whose sole purpose was to appear on a Mario game.

and

3) Geno is the most popular Mario character wanted for Brawl. His chances at this point are as good as Bowser Jr and Paper Mario no matter how you want to spin it.

I hate comparing Bowser Jr. to Geno because I like them both equally. Why can't they both be in. With Doc out that leaves 2 spaces for Mario eh?
Both=win. That would rep the new Mario and old Mario games. That would be made of win! :)

Hey, hey, don't knock on Sora, he may sing "Under The Sea" in a mermaid costume, but he also was capable of kicking the **** out of 1000 heartless :p

He kicks a**, but nothing next to Geno. I just don't like him as a character. Roxas would be better!

Anyways let me respond to some of these points:

Geno might not have a big fanbase, but I'm pretty sure he has good one if he was recommended 4 times on the poll and 5 times on Sakurai's journal. Now none of us (not me anyways) are saying that Geno is going to be in automatically just because he was high on the polls. All I'm saying is that his chances are good because of that.

He isn't automatic, but he is likely. He has a huge cult classic following-rivalling the size of the EarthBound/MOTHER fanbase. *points at Ness and Lucas*

Sakurai might go through some trouble with SE to get Geno's rights for SSBB, so I doubt he'll end up as an AT, but its not an impossibility.

AT is unlikely. It's either Geno goes all the way playable, or he's not in at all.

As for Geno being important to the Mario universe, well nobody has really made such claims. But technically you can argue that Geno is sort of an inspiration. I mean he was in the first Mario RPG game, he was the first 3rd party made character along Mallow for a Mario series. He was part of a project in which Nintendo worked for the first time ever with a 3rd party to make a Mario game. Well you get the point.

Exactly. He's argueably the most popular Mario character not in smash yet. Heck, he's probably more popular then Bowser Jr.

I've already said this before, looking at these points, both Geno and Bowser Jr have the SAME chances of being in Brawl. Both are even capable of making it to Brawl if the Mario series does end up having 6 reps.
They both should be in Brawl. They both have major fanbases and moveset potentials. BUT NO SHADOW MARIO!

Il Piantissimo would be awesome in Brawl! Obscure and current?! He could easily dispatch foes with his amazing skills in running!
Oh no, I've started someone's idea.

On- Topic:

Brawl won't have Geno in it simply because of the fact that nobody (except incredi-nerds) had heard of him before he was suggested.

You fail terribly on a ton of levels.

An incredi-nerd? Simply because you weren't born in the time frame of the SNES or SMRPG you call those who heard of it nerds?

Look. What I'm trying to say is Geno is popular, but it's not logical popularity. He's a god**** wood-man with a spherical head, with a torn blue cape and a hat with a butterfly's nose on it. I don't see how anyone can possibly want to play as him. And there's no chance of him being redesigned to look cool. They can improve his graphics for sure, but make him look purely realistic? We all know the answer.

1. It's logical popularity. Your opinion is not fact. It is opinion.

2. He's not a wood man, he's just possessing a doll. Awesome.

3. He could definitely be redesigned to look cool. Look at some fan art, some people have made him look amazing.

4. Realistic? Give me a break. This is SUPER SMASH BROTHERS. I guess Kirby is realistic now. Oh, and Mr. GaW too~!

I like your location.

Whether or not Geno's look is pretty to you, I can assure you, none of us on this forum care about, neither Sakurai.

He's a doll indeed, but how real can you want a doll to look?
If you really care about looks, you should really consider some of the characters already added.
- A green dragon, with a lizard tongue that throws eggs
- A fat man in a biker suit who flies around the stage by farting
- An electric rodent with blush
- A pink ball with a hammer that sucks in people
- A penguin with a hammer which floats around the stage
(Rest assured, have no problem with these characters, just trying to get across a point)

It's a GAME - how real do you want the characters to look?
If he is confirmed, some of these people who hate Geno so badly and claim they don't ever want to use him, I don't want to hear about how cool he is after launch or how much you love to use him.

Considering how he's a wooden doll that basically has the artillary of a small army, a better question is who wouldn't want to play as him?

Your second arguement is flat out herrendous and I think I can see a hairline crack developing on my monitor from the sheer fact that you typed it... Case in point, does Lucas look like a real human teen? Does Yoshi look like a real dinosaur? Does Pikachu look like a real rat? Needless to say, you should feel embarrassed to suggest that Geno can't be in Brawl unless he looks 100% realistic...

That argument is total fail... Brawl isn't about realism...

I can see Geno as an assist for sure... But I'm shaky on his inclusion as a playable...

Don't count on it. I highly doubt Sakurai would go through all of the trouble doing all the meetings and working out legal kinks for just an AT.

Either he's a PC, or he's not in at all.

Logic.

I hope you do realize Square-Enix is partially owned by Geno, so in that matter he would HAVE to consult them for the rights to the character.

Snake's already a playable character, meaning Konami already has a representative added to the roster.

Square-Enix just getting an AT? Yeah, don't think so.
. . .IDK what series rep has to do with making this different. He is still a 3rd party character AT.

And who said S/E would "just" get a AT? Geno isn't the be-all-end-all of S/E.

I never said there couldn't be a 3rd party AT, I said there couldn't be a third party only getting an AT.

Geno IS however the most likely candidate from Square-Enix at this point.

The fact that he got 5 journal entries entered on the DOJO, meaning those 5 entries of Geno interested him.

When he said he considers Geno first party, not third even though he is, replying to an email in his grab bag, wouldn't that mean he had to think some of him? And why didn't he just pick another email if he didn't care much for him?

It's hard to believe you don't think he'd consider him, after he scored so high on the poll. A basic case of common sense. =/

How so?

Realisticly Geno is the only one capable of representing SE since he is both: one of the most popular characters wanted for Brawl and actually was in a Mario game putting his chances higher than any other SE character.

Not near the rep status of S/E, but a Mario universe WTF character, who is actually IMPORTANT to Nintendo's history.

Would you rather Cloud, who had 3 minutes on a Nintendo console or as a summon?
Even more-so, Chain of Memories isn't even a Nintendo exclusive, seeing as it got remade in 3D on other systems, so none of the character in that game are too much of a big choice.

He was in Mario's first RPG, which set the basis of every Mario RPG which hits the market today. Which he played a VERY major role in, mind you, "my friend".

PM Fatmanonice, he has all the information posted on the Japanese DOJO, and enough to convince you he has better chances than you give him credit for.
