“Sega has publically apologised to the fans as the quality of console games in the Sonic franchise hasn’t been acceptable over recent years. It’s been tough translating that iconic side scrolling 2D experience from the 90s into 3D but Sonic is still huge for us so the new games will be more inspired by how it played in its heyday.”

People say **** about modern console Sonic games being ****, and I'm just here having enjoyed Adventure, Adventure 2, Heroes, Unleashed, Colors, Generations, and Lost World immensely.

I do think the 2d games had better consistency but the 3d games have been good. That said i think the only one that rivals sonic 3 in quality is Generations or Colors

My opinions on some console Sonic games:

Sonic 1: Great start to the franchise. Had it's problems but I can't knock it for that since it's the first game.

Sonic CD: A wonderful expansion of the ideas in the first game. I also really like how the game can be played in multiple different ways to get the best ending. It means all kinds of players can be happy.

Sonic 2: Improved over the first game but I felt the level design had more instances of being cheap and I thought Sonic's jumping physics felt a bit off.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles (grouping them together because I never play them separately): The pinnacle of 2D Sonic. It's easily one of my favourite games of all time.

Sonic Adventure: Dated as hell but I think everything apart from the Big levels was really well designed and I think it deserves a modern remake with all of the bugs and spotty programming removed.

Sonic Adventure 2: I'm not a fan. The only things I enjoy are the Sonic/Shadow levels, and even then, not too many of them. The level design felt too linear and everything was floating above a bottomless pit.

Sonic Heroes: Has some of the same problems as SA2 and some obnoxious enemy waves and some missions are bogus. But at the very least, Team Sonic and Team Rose are definitely a fun time.

Shadow The Hedgehog: The story is god-awful and the mission design was too at times, but I honestly didn't think it was as bad as people say. While the whole edginess the guns were supposed to bring was dumb thematically, they were actually well implemented as a gameplay mechanic. I thought only being able to use one weapon at a time was cool as it could encourage you to play through levels with different weapons and made it so switching guns meant switching the gameplay style up to what you needed at a given time. There was also a ton of variety in the weapons.

Sonic '06: It's one of my least favourite games of all time.

Sonic and the Secret Rings: I liked it. One of the Sonic games that stood out to me as having a story that actually hooked me. Gameplay took a bit to get truly fun though because of the level up system.

Sonic Unleashed (HD): The Sonic game with the highest production values, and it shows. It's one of my favourites. I really want a PC port (as well as a PS4/Xbox One port), as this game was ahead of it's time graphically, which did cause framerate issues in later levels. I love the story and characters though, and I actually like playing as the Werehog. It also has an incredible sense of world building and it felt like a really huge adventure if you really want to do everything. Also it did a really good representing different cultures and the townspeople were so diverse. Also, a game has never made me so hungry...

Sonic and the Black Knight: I quite like it too. The soundtrack is one of my favourites (I love Celtic music), and the story is really good, and the gameplay doesn't take long to be fun like in Secret Rings. It's also the best portrayal of Sonic's character to date. He needs to be written like he was here more often.

Sonic Colours: It's a lot of fun and the Wisps are cool, but there is too much 2D. The level aesthetics are some of my favourites though, as is the soundtrack.

Sonic Generations: One of my favourites too, and I even got the Collector's Edition for it. Such a fantastic love letter to the franchise and it's fans. So many great remixes, a lot of cool new things done with existing levels, they implemented the skill system from Secret Rings in a way that worked much better, and it has easily the best boss fights in any 3D Sonic game. Only let down is the sheer lack of story/funny cutscenes. So much missed potential with the idea of having two Sonics.

Sonic Lost World: I think it's great. It has a few flaws like some bizarre level design and some terrible conveyance, but I still really enjoyed it and would love to see the parkour idea developed further.

I still need to play Adventure 2 but I have a bit of a problem. I don't know if I should get it now on Gamecube or wait a bit and get it on steam. I would go with option 2 but I don't know how long I would be waiting to get it

Well it's there right now.

Unless you are waiting on a sale. In which case, check during every holiday season (Halloween, Christmas, etc).

It's also on PSN and Xbox Live if you have those.

No see, the problem is I only have a Mac, and I don't know if it can play Adventure 2. And even if I can, my internet at home isn't the great at downloading things, so yeah.

In that case, there isn't an official Mac release. However, there are workarounds apparently to get it working on Macs. I don't have any experience doing that though.

For the record, If you going to get either of the SA games, play SA1 on dreamcast, it's seemingly less buggy and it has a better presentation in my opinion. For SA2, get the gamecube version, unlike SADX i rarely encounter any new glitches and in my opinion it is the superior version. However, the PSN and XboxLive ports jack the sound mixing up badly and hearing the characters is almost impossible in some cutscenes with loud music. This was slightly present in the dreamcast versions but the PSN and XboxLive ports seem to have it the worse, and I never noticed anything too ridiculous except in the hero and dark final in game cutscenes. That said an xbox controller is great for Sa2.

Sa2 as a whole i like a lot but i realize its flaws. For what its worth i have fun with every playstyle, but with that said each playstyle has a certain level i absolutely cannot stand. I do agree that i find the game a bit too linear though, especially for sonic and shadow, but they do a really good job in giving you an impression of speed and its really exhilarating to go as fast as i can through the levels for me. And the chao garden was a lot better, cant forget that.

I already had SADX on Sonic CD collection. It's funny, but did have some announces (god dam casino level).

Okay, I'll get the Gamecube version so that I can play it now. Though I wonder if I will get annoyed at the linear of the game.

If we get a game that's basically just the classic Sonic from Generations I'll be very disappointed.

Would that be like the original Sonic games remade? I thought everyone loved the original 2D games?

I mean... I loved Mario the first time too and I didn't need a million more NEW Super Mario Bros. games...

Oh, I see.

You prefer them to keep trying with the 3d games (with some 2d games in the mix) rather than just playing it safe and keep making 2D sonic games?

I suppose.

Or if they do revisit their roots, make it not just a rehash or generic copy.

Like, we've had great modern 2D games that aren't just "Classic Sonic". Look at all the handheld titles like the Advance series or Rush. They don't need to be Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Part 1... Disgusting.

So, make 2D Sonic games but don't just use Classic Sonic like, as you said, the Rush and advance series? (I actually need to play those)

Actually, I've been meaning to ask, why does every dislike Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Part 1/2? I've only played 1 and I enjoyed it quiet a bit. I not sure how to describe it, but it felt like the classic Sonic games with a twist. Really, the only thing I hate about it was Sonic running animation. It just looked stupid.

My opinions on some console Sonic games:
...
Agree with a lot of this. Well put :)

Despite Sonic 1-3k being my favorite games/Sonic games, I just don't have faith in Sonic Team/Dimps to make another "Classic" 2D Sonic game. Call me a grumpy old pessimist, but they have played the "back to his roots" card too many times. I'd rather them do something bigger and broader (SONIC ADVENTURE 3 YEAH?!).

Most of the later 2D Sonic games fall into one or more of the following problems:
1. Janky Physics or barely emphasised at all. Seriously Sonic's pinball physics is the coolest thing about the classics. Basic things like going down slopes as a ball to gain speed, jumping on certain slopes on the ground that significantly alter your trajectory etc. I'm not the best at explaining this but Sonic 3k got the feeling of this perfectly.

2. "Gotta go fast" mentality. Sure, Sonic games are about speed (through complementing the actual platforming), but you should be earning it. Instead in later games, top speed is given at the press of a button or boostpads/dashpanels and automatic spring paths are placed everywherrrrrrrre. The classic spindash is a perfectly fine example of a balanced tool to gain speed as it requires to be completely still on the ground to perform (thus you've lost all your momentum anyway), requires charging, and forces you into ball form (not always optimal).

3. Poor level design. This one is tough to get right (and tough to explain, I'm not a level designer.. I wish I was), but there a clear problems that are consistently repeated i.e. Bottomless pits everywhere that are easy to fall into the first time playing (should only have maybe 1 zone based on this that makes the pits obvious). Boostpads/springs that take control away from the player. Running into walls/enemies/spikes that are way to difficult to react to. I'm so sick and tired of seeing bloody homing attack chains across a bottomless pit...

Pinball physics incorporated with good level design that explores this with rewarding speed is honestly what makes Sonic "Sonic" to me. So how do the later 2D Sonic games fair against the classics?

Sonic Advance Series: These games are probably the closest to the originals with the first one being the most faithful. 2&3 slowly fell into the above problems, but they were still fun. I'd be happy if we got more of these.

Sonic Rush Series: Kinda ignores the whole physics stuff entirely and it's the first game to add the "boost to win" button. HOWEVER, they actually made the level design accommodate the boost mechanic really well, and the way you earn speed is through maintaining a fairly limited boost meter (through collecting rings, killing enemies, tricking etc). Not as interesting/enjoyable momentum based gameplay, but it's still a lot of fun.

Sonic 4: *Shudders* This just fails badly on all 3 points and so much more. Biggest offenders are the completely broken physics that goes against any form of momentum pinballs physics with a half ass attempt of trying to copy the classic's level design. Also, homing attack was incorporated way too much (personally I don't think it belongs at all in 2D sonic games, homing attack was mainly added to make landing on enemies at high speeds easier in 3D right??). A lot of the music sounded like a dying electronic cat. Episode 2 solved a lot of the originals problems, but it was still a very mediocre platformer.

Classic Sonic in Generations: I remember being so dissapointed playing the demo for the first time when trying to roll down a hill then through a loop... Soo, the physics were way off base and now they allow you to spam the hell out of this OP spindash while running like its SA1 in 2D! ALTHOUGH!! The level design was actually pretty great, with each level having fun and interesting gimmicks (akin to the originals), and by the end of it I was able to appreciate it for what it was and stop comparing it to the classics (even though you're playing as "Classic" Sonic :p). Plus, the graphics/music/presentation of that game was gorgeous.

TLDR: current Sonic Team/dimps can make decent 2D plat formers at best, but they keep missing the point with what made the classics so good.
PS: Rayman Legends is awesome.

Sonic Advance 2 is pretty fun for me, but it gets hold pretty fast because you can beat a stage fairly easily. And there are some really stupid enemy and spike placement. The example i'm thinking about his Music Plant. Man... That stage was awful on level design. Cheap enemy placement, spikes in some important stage plattaforming and cheap enemies (I'M LOOKING AT YOU HAMMER CLOWN >:I )

But quite honestly I would love an improved Sonic Advance formula. No more cheap enemy placement or so many boostpads, just a classic formula with some adventure elements like the homing attack, but on his Sonic Advance 2 version.

Rush is amazing.

DS Colors was basically a Rush sequel, as said :3

Although, I think I preferred Generations over Colors for 3D Sonic.

Sonic Advance 2 had some of the best battles in any Sonic game, imo.

S3&K and Generations are my favourite games for bosses, as well as Unleashed but only the Werehog bosses (those games are probably my favourites in general though).

Sonic 1 & 2 are cool for bosses as they are kinda of the "really quick if you know what you're doing" variety but I like the more epic feeling bosses of the three I mentioned. They just feel more fleshed out.

Sonic Adventure 2 (: Battle if you're one of those who like to be specific) will always pretty much be my favorite. It's what introduced me to Sonic (Although I got Sonic Mega Collection at around the same time, my fondest early memories all stem from this game), I loved the gameplay (Even the sections that people complain about these days such as the Treasure Hunting), and the soundtrack for me is the best and most varied and personalized character-wise soundtrack of any Sonic game. And thanks to the best rendition of the Chao system (SADX also had the Chao Garden, but it was a downgrade from SA2:B's for sure), it had more replay value then any other Sonic game before or after it ^^

Kinda...but it had a lot of levels or long stretches that focus purely on raw platforming (that emphasise the use of a double jump) which Rush barely had. I'd say daytime Sonic Unleashed and Modern Sonic in Generations are more a 3D Rush.

And yeah, Sonic Colours DS is pretty much Rush 3 with cool power ups.
