He says he's been informed by knights that Naofumi started the fire in the forest, at which he scoffs at, still he offers them hospitality for the night at least. He also had maids deliver them dinner, Filo is very happy to see the food, but Naofumi says they don't know if it's safe... So Reichnott took a small thing from Naofumi's plate to prove it isn't poisoned and tease a little. Melty says it's rude to not accept the hospitality, Naofumi says "whatever, we'll be off at dawn"-

-Reichnott says he's glad to see Melty seems to behave more like a child compared to when they last met, which embarrassed her. At dusk, they are allowed a bedroom, Melty says he should rest, but Naofumi insists he'll stay up at night in case of attack, then Raphtalia also tried to convince him to rest, to which he accepted. Melty is annoyed he doesn't takes her seriously, as she and Filo decide to go explore a bit-

On the castle on the while, Aultcray commands the knights to look for Melty everywhere or else they'll be executed, he clearly is distraught for her safety, Malty assures him they'll bring her back, whatever it takes. Aultcray curses Naofumi under his breath, saying "You won't take my family again, accursed shield...!"-

-Back to Reichnott's manor, Naofumi in the middle of the night awakes, seeing Melty is awake. He tells her she should sleep, she says she's not feeling sleepy... Then she asks him if she should go back to the capital. So many people are suffering, and as crown princess, she feels she should be helping them... He however, assures her that her life is first, and should go to bed-

He wonders why they returned after long. It is then the audience is shown a brief look into Raphtalia's nightmare, seen from her point of view still as a child slave, she sees her current owner forcibly pulling another demi-human girl with a chain, as she shots awake shouting "Rifana!"-

-Naofumi is there and greets her, seeing him calms her down a bit, but he says they have trouble. From the window, it's seen that Reichnott got arrested by knights, one of his maids entered the room to tell them he was accussed of holding Naofumi here, so she'll try to help them escape. After sneaking away from some knights, they hide in the kitchen, where the maid is then interrogated by knights. Melty steps in, however, and tells them that as the Crown Princess they have to stop. It is then that a new voice was heard, a voice that made Raphtalia seethe and sweat in a mixture of fear and rage-

-And it belonged to a nobleman named Idol Rabier-

-Melty asks him why he's here, Aultcray and him apparently aren't in good terms, but he says that he's doing this to stop the Devil of the Shield and rescue her. She says "well, I'm here, now bring me to the capital, in there I will clear the Shield Hero's name" and he seems to begrudgingly accept... Though he'll take her to his manor first to tell Aultcray she's there, and she agrees to his terms and they go off. During the exchange, Raphtalia borderline hyperventilated, grabbing the hilt of her sword, before Naofumi calmed her a bit down-

Naofumi hates doing it, but uses her slave crest to tell her to come out, to which they heard a thud from the attic, meaning she's there. Once with her, they asked what she was doing her, she says Melty told her to hide and not come out. She asks where she is and they tell her, making Filo try to rush out to go save her. Naofumi says that while it would be reckless, despite how he's been with her, she never stopped believing in him. He too wants to save her now-

-Reaching the town where Rabier's manor is, Raphtalia has flashbacks of when she was being sold as a slave-

She decides not. She says that if she does that, then she will be no better than him, so she'll let him live so he pays for his crimes. Rabier pulls out a sword and yells at her that demi-humans don't deserve to livee, swinging it but she blocked it, he however managed to throw hers off her hands, but she pulled out her mana sword and stabbed him with it. In disbelief and with spiritual energy gone, he walked back...-

-And fell through a window, plummeting to his supposed demise, Raphtalia feeling guilty over being partially responsible for the death of a person, Naofumi says it wasn't her fault-

Sure looks like they adapted the racist into a wimp, and seeing him fall so easily and fearfully would be damn satisfying... But they kinda just made it ambiguous if he really died or not. Will he turn up later? Will that affect Raphtalia's morality?

-As they walk down, Raphtalia has brief flashbacks. First she remembers that her parents once told her to smile always, even on bad times, that will eventually help her and those around her. The young Raphtalia promised to her parents grave that she won't cry anymore. In soon she gathered all survivors in the middle of the town, and gave a motivational speech about how they still are here, and how they can rebuild the village, and she's backed up by Keel and Rifana. Despite their young age, the adults think they're right, and rebuilding starts-

-As she and her friends help, a worried Keel asks Raphtalia if she's okay, she's lost her parents so he understands if she needs time, She still forces herself to smile and says it's fine, so Rifana tries to support her. Soon knights would arrive, the villagers glad thinking it's help from the capital... Alas, it's the knights that enslaved and killed some of them. Raphtalia and other demi-human kids were forced into a carriage, while Rifana is there, she's separated from Keel who tried to reach her, and she and Rifana were brought to Rabier's home-

-Back to the present, Raphtalia for a moment saw her cell, and Naofumi could guess what happened here, him and the others feeling disgusted. Raphtalia remembers Rabier used to come here at nights, hang her from the wrists and then use his whip on her, he wanted her to cry in his sadistic nature, but she refused to not smile. Poor Rifana, however, was also tortured and didn't fare as well-
