Naofumi and Raphtalia leave, with Erhard hoping Naofumi gets to be as optimistic as he was when they met. Naofumi wonders what to do next, and happened to glance at some demi-human kids being the slaves of a merchant who doesn't treats them well. Makes him think, the slave trader told him Raphtalia had a master before him who enjoyed torturing demi-humans...-

-It is then though, that Raphtalia's stomach growled, so it seems that he must feed her now. They get at an inn that serves food, and while Naofumi's presence brings some distaste, they still serve him regardless. He orders the cheapest meal for himself, and as for her, he sees some kid enjoying more expensive meal, so he orders it. Raphtalia is surprised, she hasn't seen something good this long, and Naofumi tells her to eat. Once she did tears appeared in the corners of her eyes, but this time they were out of joy-

Raphtalia by the end of the day reached Lv. 5, and as Naofumi checked on his new skills, she asked him who he really is, he answers he's the Shield Hero, to her dibelief, and that triggers a flashback of her parents speaking to her about the Cardinal Heroes, in particular the Shield Hero is a figure of worship to demi-humans, as they've been treated kindly by previous Shield Heroes in the past-

-She asks him what should she call him, he just says his name is fine, so she calls him Master Naofumi from now on. He gave her a medicine he made from herbs to try to cure her cold, and she drank it... It was bitter and he insisted that should mean it's good medicine. At night, Raphtalia dreamt of her parents demise, their village was attacked in the first wave, and they ran, but they reached a cliff where the sea was below, as a large canine monster approached-

-Her parents sacrificed themselves to buy the other villagers time, allowing themselves to be eaten so others can escape while it happens, and they pushed Raphtalia to the ocean below to save her. This caused Raphtalia to cry loud during her sleep about her parents, jolting Naofumi awake who asks what's wrong as she keeps mumbling of her parents dying. In response he hugs and pats her head, telling her it will all be alright-

All in all, life has truly improved for her-

-They get to kill monsters again, and they find a rabbit monster, which surprised them and bit Naofumi in the arm. He tells Raphtalia to kill it, she can't bring herself since it would bleed and she hates blood, her slave curse activating for a bit. He tells her that if she can't, he will be unable to take care of her anymore. The waves are near, he can only defend, he needs someone to fight for him... Still scared, she musters the courage to and killed the rabbit-

Naofumi asks if he knows of any villages they could travel to, Erhard replying with their level, the nearest and safest place is a villaged called Lute. Once in it, Naofumi intends to trade merchandise with a merchant, but it isn't enough, so he asks if there's any way to get some money quick, he gets told there's a mine they use to get ore from, but ever since the first wave, monsters have taken residence in it-

-Before going in, Naofumi used materials like rope to scan and gain new shields and skills, gaining an ability named Air Strike Shield which manifests a large shield of energy, surprising himself-

-In the mine, they managed to carve some ore out, unfortunately, they are then ambushed by a two-headed canine monster, which terrified Raphtalia as it reminds her of the one that killed her parents-

-It attacks them, but Naofumi grabbed Raphtalia and jumped down some height to evade it-

Naofumi tells her she can't change the past, her parents are gone, but they can prevent others from losing their loved ones. He then tries to block the monster from attacking, but its second head bites his shoulder. Raphtalia is scared, but he commands her to attack it, if she stands there she'll die if he dies. Seeing her reluctance, she told him to forget and run off, he'll hold it there for her to escape, but knowing he would be killed, Raphtalia gets a vision of her parents of her parents leaving her-

-Thus she went to attack it-

-The creature turned to her, but Naofumi casted Air Strike Shield to protect her. After managing to stab it right in its chest, the creature died, Naofumi telling her she did a good job. She ran at him crying and hugged him, he says she should be careful. She begs to never, ever leave her alone... So he pats her head, telling her that she should attack, and he will defend, that way they don't have to worry about the other dying, and that they'll leave after hescans the monster-
