He declares that "screw this world! I didn't ask to be taken off my home, summon a new Shield Hero then!", Ren and Itsuki berate that he's a coward running away from what he caused, while Motoyasu is like "who needs him?", as for Aultcray, he wishes he could return him, but it's impossible to summon new heroes unless all four died-

-Only if he deals with the waves he can return home, of course no one wants to work with him, he says he'll find a way to deal with them himself, releasing magic from the shield in his anger that alerts the knights-

Naofumi is like "it will be that way alright..." and then throws away some pocket money he had in his shield to buy stuff as he claims this is what they wanted and went off, Motoyasu tried to stop him, but Naofumi said he had no time for him... And the camera showed for a second that, from the shadows, a woman observed the trial-

-Indeed, when Naofumi gets to the marketplace, everyone avoids him, except Erhard who grabbed and was about to punch him for what he was accused of, but upon looking at Naofumi's eyes and seeing his cynical tone, he realizes he's the real victim-

Hayate: "Good, at least one person sees the real him..."

-Before he goes off, he gives Naofumi a green cape as a gesture. It's not much, but he won't give the best impression with what he wears now, and wishes him good luck. Naofumi went up to beat balloons monsters all night, and he managed to rise to level 2, nevertheless to say it's too little, but at least he plans to sell the balloon skin off. He sees some adventurer selling them to a merchant, so he gets there, the merchant is hesitant to accept due to who he is, acting a bit arrogant to drive him off, but he pulls him and says "then how much these would cost?" as he reveals balloons under his cape-

-The merchant gets it and accepts to buy the skin, and Naofumi tells him to spread the word they better sell to the Shield Hero or will be bitten-

Next day he explores around town, seeing how medicinal herbs are in stores in the town, he decides to look for some, and just like with monster parts, sell them for his survival. However, just like with monsters, he tests the capacites of his shield, after it scans some leaves, he sees in the stats menu that it can turn into other forms, so he tries it with one named the Leaf Shield-

-More conveniently, he discovers he doesn't needs to transform the shield to use the abilities after he already has, this Leaf Shield for exaple, increases the healthy growth of plants he takes care of, so he decides to make some business by planting some herbs and selling them. Even then things are still rough for him over the next days, and one day while eating in a dinner, he narrates he's become so bitter and cynical he no onger pays attention to the taste of food-

Medea: "He better get his name cleared somehow, but I'm also interested what else can the shield do"

-Some thugs went to his table and said "hey we wanna join your party", clearly intending to actually rob him, Naofumi played along, then when outside and when they revealed their intentions quickly beated them... Even then, he's frustrated, he is fully by himself, he can't trust in anyone but Erhard now, who has no combat abilities, so he can't join fighting-

-It is then that a pretty shady character speaks and approaches to him, asking where his party members would be-

I want his name cleared ASAP, but there's some good lore being built up in this show, and we also haven't seen some of his shield powers yet. The story can't hinge entirely on Naofumi's falsely poor reputation.

-Naofumi tells the shady man he has none, to which he offered him a... service. Naofumi rejects the notion of being given party members, but the short man says what he plans to give him is something more convenient, based on the rumors around him... People that will obey him no matter what. He begins to listen and follow him inside a tent, where hundreds of cages lie around-

-Inside them, there's people, all of them either demi-human or beastmen. The shady man reveals himself to be a slave trader, and this is his business. Slavery is a legal practice in this country, but of course Naofumi asks why would he purchase a slave, to which the slave trader begins to tell him that slaves are marked with a magic crest that makes them so, if they disobey, they get large amounts of pain that could in extreme cases kill them. Naofumi has grown so bitter and cynical he listens to it, having an interest-

-After the OP, the slave trader placed a substance over a slave crest mark the child had, the girl felt pain and when Naofumi asked, the slave trader said the pain would be brief and that she would now be binded to him. He's proven right, as he sees through his stat menu she's set as a companion-

-Naofumi pays the trader, who noticed he left more than the payment stablished, to which he says he knew he'd try to rig him anyway, which he admits. He demands to know her name, the girl is coughing, but his demand doesn't changes. In between them, she says she's named Raphtalia, and with that he grabbed her wrist and took her out. Next day he would go to Erhard to give her equipment and new clothes with he could afford-

-To test things out, he took a Balloon monster he had hidden and commanded her to stab it with her dagger, she couldn't bring herself to, so he obeyed and that actiivated the pain, the girl reluctantly did so, and she gained experience... And Naofumi was surprised to see he did too, turns out companions get shared experience-

-Naofumi pays the trader, who noticed he left more than the payment stablished, to which he says he knew he'd try to rig him anyway, which he admits. He demands to know her name, the girl is coughing, but his demand doesn't changes. In between them, she says she's named Raphtalia, and with that he grabbed her wrist and took her out. Next day he would go to Erhard to give her equipment and new clothes with he could afford-

-To test things out, he took a Balloon monster he had hidden and commanded her to stab it with her dagger, she couldn't bring herself to, so he obeyed and that actiivated the pain, the girl reluctantly did so, and she gained experience... And Naofumi was surprised to see he did too, turns out companions get shared experience-

Medea: "...I feel so bad for this kid, somehow she got ill, now she's a slave to a bitter person"

Me too... I felt bad for Naofumi for a while, and I still kinda do, but that doesn't excuse taking his anger and bitterness out on a helpless kid.

-Naofumi says from now on he expects her to kill monsters for him. Erhard is blunt in that he's treating the kid too harsh and hopes the same as Medea, saying at this rate he won't have painless death. Naofumi and Raphtalia leave, with Erhard hoping Naofumi gets to be as optimistic as he was when they met. Naofumi wonders what to do next, and happened to glance at some demi-human kids being the slaves of a merchant who doesn't treats them well. Makes him think, the slave trader told him Raphtalia had a master before him who enjoyed torturing demi-humans...-

-It is then though, that Raphtalia's stomach growled, so it seems that he must feed her now. They get at an inn that serves food, and while Naofumi's presence brings some distaste, they still serve him regardless. He orders the cheapest meal for himself, and as for her, he sees some kid enjoying more expensive meal, so he orders it. Raphtalia is surprised, she hasn't seen something good this long, and Naofumi tells her to eat. Once she did tears appeared in the corners of her eyes, but this time they were out of joy-

-She asks why he ordered this for her, he says "dunno, seems you'd like it", as he eats, still unable to taste food-
