Any of you guys dislike melee and stuck with 64? If so, what did you not like about melee? Not trashing 64, just kinda curious.

Well the number one thing is that I never got a gamecube. So I haven't played melee much.

I don't like the emphasis on tech skill. I don't like the lack of combos. I don't like the grabs being so weak (although 64 grabs are probably too strong). I don't like how all the characters all feel like fast fallers. I don't like how edgeguarding is hugely nerfed (although again in 64 edgeguarding is probably too good).

Edgeguarding in 64 is def too easy and i'd say the recoveries and edgeguarding is what Melee improved most in comparison to 64.

I agree with you about the rest though.

I don't know. It seems like edgeguarding is kind of an afterthought in Melee, at least amongst the best players. I know that sounds like an exaggeration because obviously you are always thinking about the edge, but I just don't remember seeing too many matches where good players get gimped or edgeguarded. It seems in fact that edgeguards are primarily a method for racking up damage - you get them off the edge then hit them a few times while they are focused on getting back (and thus don't have the offensive capacity to hit you back).

Once again, I don't play Melee so I'm going just off videos for that, and obviously it depends on the character.

In 64, you fear the edge. If you go off it, it is very difficult to get back at all. I do think that edgeguards and gimps are too powerful in 64 but Melee takes that too far.

If I could change one thing about the edge game in 64 it would be to make it so that you can grab the ledge while in hitstun. That way with reverse ledge DI you could grab the ledge, which nerfs the "standing fsmash" style of edgeguard a bit. That or make it way easier to get the reverse ledge DI to send you back onto the stage. I don't think these go too far at all. Edgeguarding will still be very powerful but slightly more difficult.

In melee good edgeguards leading to death are often applauded

In 64 good edgeguards leading to death are generally expected

its the sort of vibe i get, anyway

SSB64 ----------------------------------- vs --- SSBM
tech ----------------------------------- > ---- tech
cancel ----------------------------------- > --- cancel
combo ----------------------------------- > --- combo
grab ------------------------------------- > --- grab
fast fall difference btw characters ----- > --- fast fall difference btw characters

and the SSBM recovery is too good for a game that poor in combos.
It all comes down to one thing:
SSB64 Better than SSBM
if you like graphics SSBM is your game.
if you're a respectful smasher SSB64 is definitly your game.
This is my opinion though.

hmm..

i don't know, really, i just didn't feel like putting time into learning wavedashing among other techs; also, i didn't feel like getting 25% gimped by a marth.

That's pretty powerful 3mman >_>
I just prefer the convenience of online with 64, if melee was easily played online I would lean towards playing that.

i tried the online play with the phantasy star universe patch for it, was alright, very glitchy and laggy, but alright.

i am a terrible melee player, however.

Imao, all meele players I've seen sucks at SSB64, maybe that's why they migrated.
Anyway, I'm just talking for those whom I've seen playing, if I haven't seen you playing, then you may be good at both.

Melee looks way funner than 64

Online Melee play is never gonna happen, people already lag bad enough on 64

Hey!!! I'm a software developer... DO NOT say never.......
And that lag on SSB64 that can be solved.
EDIT: But just about SSB64, I don't care about melee.

It already has happen, from my experience it lags less than 64. However, it desyncs every minute or 2. That's one of the reasons why you barely see ppl playing online with it

I had this dream that I hope does not happen in real life but on the off chance it does what should I do if the following happens...

I am playing link in a team battle. It is green team (Fox and Link) Vs Red team (Pikachu and Kirby), my team mate just died on me, I am facing Kirby and pikachu as a single link, and kirby still has foxes lasers from his (Kirby's) kill.

is team attack on?

If on dreamland: suicide, it'll be less hasslesome than approaching only to get camp-***** by them

If on hyrule/saffron: camp for a bit and see if you can bait them

Link Vs Kirby with fox lazers and a pikachu?!

Omfg. That is scary.

What asainaussie said, just suicide if on DL and try to camp on places of lower elevation on hyrule (safest in the box area).

Its weird, I have never had a dream about smash though I feel I should have had on by now considering how much I play.

It annoys me a ton when everyone from the 64 community starts saying that the only reason they play is for the online. Grrr.

I liek 64 better than melee because the defensive shenanigans are less shenanigany, the physics feel more... not realistic... but more right to me, if you know what I'm saying. Also, too much techskill in melee that I don't feel like learning; at that point, it's not fun, it's busywork. And in 64 you can learn to play every char. And in 64 you can be competitive with every char. And in 64 the combos are a lot cooler. And you can taunt cancel. And so many other things.

Agreed.

I don't agree with the tech skill thing, though. If you take out flashy unecessary stuff like moonwalking there isn't much practice required after you learn SHFFLing and wavedashing/wavelanding (especially if you don't use space animals).

Isn't there a bunch of space animal stuff that requires mucho techskill? When I do play melee (which is fairly often, but very badly) I play Doug, but I've always heard from fox/falco mains that there is a bunch of stuff beginning with "Wave" or ending with "cancel" that makes fingers into blistery little misery-sticks and brains into rinse-and-repeat mushes of timings and button-presses until you get the hang of it.
