I mean, they gotta tap into that horny/lonely nerd market that overlaps into Fire Emblem aka 90% of the fanbase, and Gacha+Bikini Girls = $$$.

Big brain marketing, more gacha 2D anime bikini girls = less of a chance your fanbase goes outside and finds a real three dimensional girl. BOOM
Nintendo are finally understanding the fans

While yes, their main draw was their promotional prowess, another notable factor for Corrin's inclusion was their unique playstyle and moveset potential. It was what won Sakurai over after initially being hesitant over adding a 6th FE character. Smash is a fighting game after all. You need to make sure characters are fun and unique too.

I always just thought the corrin hate was unjustified. Roy and Chrom were both massively requested characters, and when we get them, everybody’s happy, even when they’re clones. But when we get the unique movesets, everybody gets angry. I’ve seen some concepts for Smash 6 where Fire Emblem only has Marth, Roy, Chrom, and Ike. Some people are just insane.
And don’t hit me with the “not the same group of people” argument. We both know that’s a lie and just an excuse to explain why people are so hypocritical whenever it benefits them.

On another note, it looks like Smashboards will be down tomorrow.

I mean, Roy got in Melee while his game wasn't even release and FE was pretty much unknown outside Japan at the time.

In other words, there was always some characters who were choosed for promotions purpose, rather to their game/own merits, ever since Melee atleast.

Soooo really, that "magic" you had pre-Corrin was never truly there, and honestly, I think it's better to just accept some characters are chosen for reasons we wouldn't necessary accept or see come in. As long as the character add something new and/or fun to Smash, they can have a place to the roster ( retro pick like Ice Climbers or Duck Hunt didn't got picked because they're popular or promote stuff, for exemple), atleast, that's how I see it.

Note tho that I'm not a fan of Corrin or especially Byleth lately, buuuut them being promotion pick are just minors problems in a list of others problems I got with them.
It never had the mascot head to be blunt, it's just people are always soo enamored or awe struck by the roster that they forget that we've had characters like Jigglypuff or Roy in since the very early days.

As much as I love her, what has Jigglypuff 'done' to deserve her spot? She was popular in Japan and appeared in a handful of season 1 episodes... but moreso than Meowth? No, she was put in because she was easy.

Same with Roy, he was put in for advertising purposes.
Thats kind of the point I was trying to make. I know that it was never like that. And I accept it, even if the fact that it isn’t is kind of frustrating. But at one point I did think that despite the holes. Corrin is when that ended. Thus, slight bitterness

I want to like Tokyo Ghoul because the story premise is pretty interesting, not gonna lie.

But these characters feel one dimensional and even paper thin much of the time. Nobody feels dynamic, and when a character development moment is played, it feels shoe-horned in at the last minute, or randomly. There isn't this gradual build in characters for the most part, and it's pretty jarring to me.

Yes, I decided to try this show. I'm very lukewarm on it so far.

I mean, that's on you personally.

I don't really get the 'hate' for characters themselves. I can understand not liking certain fanbases or people who tie themselves to characters, but characters are just.... I dunno the correct word? Faultless? Smash is and has never been this club for the elites of gaming, it's always been a "Come as you are" sorta deal.

I think some people get way too deep into the "This character is WORTHY!" or "They DESERVE to be in Smash!" that they forget that we have a literal Piranha Plant, there's no barrier to entry.

This is something I just think is impossible to explain to people who like the franchise. The characters all fit a similar theme. It's a unique combination of look, feel, gameplay style, and personality that makes them all feel similar no matter how different their movesets end up being. You know what you're gonna get with a new Fire Emblem character. You'll get a swordsman with a medieval fantasy theme and a semi-stock "time to tip the scales! I cannot loose! The choice is mine!" personality. Again, if you are familiar with the franchise, then of course you know better. But to people who don't like the franchise and don't play it (a LOT of people) that is how these characters come across and that's why people get fatigued of them. And there's no real way to mitigate this without Fire Emblem just not being Fire Emblem anymore. While people like me have to accept that Smash isn't what we thought it was and have to move on, you have to accept that the series will just be an inherent turn-off for many people and no amount of arguing will change that. You'll just make them mad and make the conversation even more toxic.

I do inderstand where Snake is coming from, promotional picks can be bummers, and sometimes they do ruin the element of surprise that Smash is notorious for.

That said, I feel like the term promotional pick is thrown around too loosely. I remember in the Smash 4 days were people were insistent that getting Cloud 100% meant that the Final Fantasy 7 remake was gonna be on Wii U (yes, THAT FF7R), and thus, Cloud was just a promotional pick as a result.

Really want to bring up anything else right now to change the topic but I know It will likely not be noticed at all as It always happens.

Like, I really wish we could talk about Street Fighter music right now for example.

Again. I know this now. And I accept it. But I can't control irrational emotions and I can't make myself like Fire Emblem (although I have been thinking of trying Warriors). There's nothing that can make my bitterness towards Corrin go away. I just have to deal with it and try not to let it control me. But I feel like as long as I express it in a non-argumentative way (which I have been trying very hard to do here) it is an opinion I am allowed to express.

I'm glad I was never in that part of the internet when Cloud happened. For me, cloud was nothing but levels of hype best indicated by this video.

I mean, Corrin as a character just had everything going against them at the time they were added. Timing-wise they couldn't have come at a worse time since fatigue on the series was already at a high with Roy and there was a perception that a fan favorite would come with the final presentation that they didn't meet since most weren't familiar with them. It also didn't help that when Fates did come out around the time they dropped in DLC, it ended up being one of the most controversial games in the franchise so they had that baggage to carry around with them as well. Altogether, they just drew the worst hand out of any character in Smash.

As long as I got characters I like (which Smash has a large majority of them) there's no reason for me to get mad at other characters.

Other FE reps:
-Blue hair
-Mainly swords
-Heroic, confident attitude
-Counter
Corrin:
-Not blue hair
-Dragon
-Cocky attitude
-Counter
Even at the most basic level, people shouldn’t hate this guy as much as they do.
I just wish they’d actually think sometimes. It gets really annoying.

Anyways, people don’t like this discussion.
Time to pull out the topic-change-inator!

So we're talking Street Fighter?

My local arcade has Street Fighter 2, so I tried playing as Ryu and Ken because of Smash, and the Guile because of turtling, but it turns out the character that really clicked with me wasn't either of them.

It was Chun Li.

I still got rocked by the CPUs though because I don't know the command inputs of her character, but I'll learn.

Street Fighter music, you say?

I've got plenty of favorite character themes from across the series, how about you?
Are there any you think should’ve been included in Ultimate?
My favourite has to be Cody's theme from IV.

Yuri's theme is also good honestly.

All in all, I wish Smash added some of the music in Street Fighter IV instead of just stuff from 2, as that game had a lot of bangers.

Cody's theme in V is also quite neat for the theme of the character in that game:

Nice.

Now I can talk about how this theme really slaps:
This bop alone made me a Cody main in the SFIV days.
SF4 soundtrack is amazing. Cody, Vega, Poison, E Honda were my favorite themes in the game (although theres a lot more that I like)

I also had It tough during my first time playing Street Fighter IV.

But with time I managed to learn Cody's combo sets and all that.

In the end It is all practice, although I must say the difficulty of CPUs on arcades tend to be brutal (the most infamous case being with Mortal Kombat 2).

Nice!

One day I should download Ultra Street Fighter IV on my PS4 and play some matches with the people here. Maybe even we could do a Mini tournament.

I’ll never understand people who are actively against and hateful about certain characters’ inclusions. Not liking nor wanting them? Of course, I myself don’t care about some and don’t care if they get in or not and would rather have others, but they’d be cool for their fans and some are kinda interesting at least. Outright detesting them and wanting them to be kept far away from Smash? Sounds pretty selfish and pointless to me, including when the character fits their made-up standards to be accepted yet is still gatekeeped by them anyway.

And the “deserving” argument sucks and ties into this. It’s a videogame, just because it’s a super-cool crossover with iconic characters doesn’t mean a character (or rather the character’s/game’s creators I guess?) have to have some specific accomplishment to deserve getting in - but I guess this doesn’t matter when some people have tried using it against Steve and Minecraft of all characters and games, probably some other big names too even if they’re older than a decade.

They should port Street Fighter IV to Switch.

I mean, they ported it to the 3DS of all consoles, so it's not too far out there.
Yeah, Street Fighter IV not being on Switch yet is really awkward

More so since It was one of the games which brought back fighting games into the bigger side of the gaming industry after the 90s alongside Mortal Kombat 9 and some others.

Just for the Sort of historical value I feel It would make sense to Port It onto Switch.

I think I’m gonna cave and buy the SwSh expansion pass.

As for Street Fighter music... I don’t know. I don’t think it’s as good as it could be. It’s definitely not KI’13 levels of amazing.
