I think you two made the right call.

The storyline isn't about romance anyway. There was little need for romantic subplots, so the way you've kinda just written them into the background of the story and it's world has been well done, imo.

It's funny that you mention that, because that show is actually one of, if not the key reason why I've grown to dislike shipping so much.

The Starco ship became so forced and and prominent during the show's final season that it's genuinely one of the main reasons for it's massive decline in quality. The romantic drama subplots became the focus of several episodes, took away from the main story, made constant 180 turns that made no sense or at least made various prior turns of events feel completely unnecessary, and last but not least, it effectively killed the already highly questionable storyline the show's final season was heading in.

It was a major contributing factor to one of my favorite shows falling from grace, so yeah, I don't exactly take kindly to shipping in fandoms and fanfiction much anymore.
