Ok I get you, alien but still appealing looking enough to not be considered overly ugly.

The key characteristics of a penguin are their smooth plumage, flippers, and their vertical silhouette. As long as you keep those traits it will be roughly penguin-like, everything else you can tweak to your liking. Maybe change the eyes to be exotic and alien, make it have an odd color, make completely change the feet to be un-birdlike, etc.

OK. I'm working on it now. But I need another person to just fire ideas back and forth with. You up for it?

Who's home planet is described as being completely covered in water with giant spiral rocks protruding out of the sea, and is is constantly visited by fog, rain and hurricanes, as well as the occasional monsoon or tsunami. The idea is that these penguin guys live on these rocky spires primarily, diving into the water to hunt, and that they have hydrokinetic abilities to lessen the severity of the currents in their immediate vicinity and to help fight predators.
