Story: This is going to be a game that has darker themes set up like Forces, but actually executes them properly. As in, the stakes are both 1.) high, and 2.) they actually FEEL high at the same time. There are also going to be mini-arcs that connect into one big arc, just like Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, especially 2. Here's the basic premise: Eggman wins. Against all odds, Eggman ends up winning and is able to hold Sonic captive while he builds his Eggman Empire once more. In order to capture Sonic and win in the first place, a strange life-form falls to earth (a hedgehog like creature), who has no memory of who they are. And on a side note, NO... nobody confuses Sonic for this new hedgehog character in this game. Confusing Sonic with Shadow was the biggest plot hole in SA2's story, and it makes no sense in the first place. The "confusing Sonic for someone" else shtick is dead and will stay dead. Anyway, Eggman brainwashes this new hedgehog into capturing Sonic. Said Hedgehog also is sensitive to the Chaos Emerald power, and Eggman has never seen anything like it. He capitalizes on this and harnesses this power through the new hedgehog (we'll call him "Nu" for now) in order to capture Sonic and get that final emerald... Eggman has 6 emeralds at the start of the story and needs the 7th, which is currently in the hands of Sonic. Sonic busts down the door and tries to fight Eggman, but Eggman has brainwashed Nu into doing his bidding by now. Sonic loses, and is captured. Eggman takes the final emerald from him and uses it to build his empire once more. Knuckles is the one to head up the "resistance" just like in Forces, but Tails will serve as his best and top adviser concerning freeing Sonic, as opposed to the unsure dead weight he was in Forces. They end up pulling off a prison break a while down the timeline, but Eggman is two steps ahead for once. By the time they're able to free Sonic, Eggman has already scattered the Emeralds all around the world. The entire globe is riddled with his henchmen robots, and he's built stronger robots than ever in order to guard each and every Chaos Emerald. The OTHER caveat in his plan is that he shattered each and every Chaos Emerald. So, not only are they gonna be tough to grab in the first place, but they must be re-assembled as well. It's up to the OG 3... Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles in order to save the globe from Eggman's empire and to restore peace and balance to the Force... I mean, their home planet.
Gameplay: The main draw that I have to the Adventure games is that there are so many different playstyles, which adds to the uniqueness of the games! But, the one flaw I have with this design is that certain gameplay modes aren't always well-designed. Example: In Adventure 2, the speed stages with Sonic and Shadow are fantastic. Tails and Eggman can be fun on the mech stages, but are typically longer and a little more unfair. And, treasure hunting with Knuckles and Rouge is good overall... but only for the first half of their stories. So, you have one gameplay/stage type that's consistently great, one that's pretty good but not as polished, and one that is, well... mixed at best from fans, we'll say. So, in order to make gameplay work in SA3 things need to be fun, straightforward, functional, and not cheap. Here's how it'll be split up:
Each of the OG three will have 7 stages to work through as they split up and search the globe for the missing Chaos Emerald shards. Unique, new stages as well. With the 7 emeralds, each emerald will be split into 3 pieces... meaning a total of 21 pieces to collect. Sonic must collect 7, Tails must collect 7, and Knuckles must collect 7.
Sonic- Speed stages. Stage 1 is the "prison break" stage, and the following 6 stages are all on his own path. It's what he does best: fun, fast platforming. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Knuckles- Treasure hunting stages. Stage 1 he'll be paired with Tails in order to free Sonic. Both Knuckles and Tails collect pieces along the way. After that, he goes off on his own to collect the other 6 pieces. Here's where things get a little different: while he still has treasure hunting in his stages, the landscape and length will fit the perfect timeframe: not too short yet not too long. Along with that, we are also bringing back the radar from SA ONE, not two. Two's radar gets wonky, but SA1's is typically more accurate. So, SA1's radar is brought back. Knuckles will also have the best music and most immersive stages since they'll be the slowest. It'll help with experience.
Tails- Tails is a weird case because while I don't mind the mech shooting from SA2, it wasn't received well by many fans. The mech stages got 50-50 reviews. So, here's how SA3 will be different: Tails will have sections where he must collect parts in order to build a machine in order to obtain an objective or to get through an area. It's similar to Legend of Zelda in the way that Tails' levels will have more puzzle solving than Knuckles or Sonic. However, these "puzzle sections" will be shorter than the speed sections... that's right, we're mixing together fast-paced platforming in with just little bits and pieces of puzzle game elements. The mix needs to be appropriate enough to still feel like a Sonic game, but the puzzle sections must be interesting enough to keep the audience engaged, while also having a good payoff in the end. Example: assemble three parts to form a bomb. Place the bomb right next to an otherwise unbreakable wall. Inside that otherwise unbreakable wall is an extra life, or a special stage, or even an emerald piece, etc.
To summarize: Sonic has 7 levels, Knuckles has 7 levels, and Tails has 7 levels. The final boss and true ending can only be obtained after all 21 Chaos Emerald pieces are collected.
Ranking system: Getting a good enough rank on a level may land the player rewards and unlockables. The difficulty will also be fair: SA2's ranking system, as cool as it was, got really hard sometimes. Unfair, even. But in SA3, it'll be different. The difficulty will be closer to Heroes and Unleashed where it's tricky to get an S or A rank, but it doesn't feel nigh-impossible. Speaking of rewards and unlockables...
Chao Garden: It's back. Rejoice. And with a couple extra modes thrown into the mix as well.
Stage names: Thought this would be cool to do. I aim for variety in themes. In finding the emerald pieces, each character goes in a different direction. Here are some ideas I had:
Sonic:
1. Silver Citadel (prison break level)
2. Coastal Cove (tropical, for nostalgia sake and also because I can't think of anything else right now)
3. Rickety Ride (a mine cart level like in the DKC games but with added rails and canyon sections like Rail Canyon)
4. Arid Altitude (desert level with sky-high dunes and sand... that's rough, coarse, irritating, and it gets everywhere
)
5. Snow Stop (A winter-y, Christmas-themed level with treacherous icy slopes and ski resorts)
6. Wilderness Way (A forest level with enemies that are stranger and more irritating than ever)
7. Eggman Eternal (An ancient ruins like area similar to Chaos Angel from Advance 3 that looks relatively in-tact but all of the colors and themes of the area are... off, due to Eggman's corruption of the place. This is to get the player motivated to take on the final boss soon enough. Also takes inspiration from Titanic Monarch once you get to the center of the level)
He will also most certainly have rival battles with Nu throughout.
Knuckles:
1. Silver Citadel (prison break level)
2. Carnival Chaos (see Casino Night and Carnival Night, but there are both day and night sections. Rotating cycle of day and night if you will)
3. Fire Frenzy (A volcano level filled with traps and janky stuff)
4. Tropical Trouble (Jungle level)
5. Aquatic Alcove (water level, but without rising and lowering water like Aquatic mine. It'll feel closer to Death chamber)
6. Archaic Alley (a beautiful ancient ruins area in broad daylight that used to be in good condition but is now wrecked. Think Greek ruins)
7. Rocket Rage (inspired by Egg Rocket from Advance 1. Probably the hardest level on here, and aptly named as well)
Tails:
1. Silver Citadel (prison break level)
2. Windy Wave (an air-borne/wind level that has a mix of a mining level type and a cavern level type. Tails will be flying the plane at one point or another)
3. Skyscraper Scramble (a city level set at night, with bright flashy lights all around)
4. Harvest Hill (autumn-themed level with gorgeous leaves falling and all that good harvest stuff)
5. Destruction Derby (a junkyard that has seen better days)
6. Virtual Vice (technology base that has machinery that's unbelievable. Think Cyber Track from Advance 3 or your favorite sci-fi movie)
7. Sky Sprint (cloud/heights level)
Bonus Levels: To play in time trial and for leisure once you get some unlockable requirements completed:
Sonic- Green Hill
Knuckles- Pumpkin Hill
Tails- Casino Night
Final Level: Cosmic Collision. The trio beat a powered up Eggman and peace is restored. Nu is freed from his brainwashing and joins up with the heroes as well in order to take down Eggman once more.
