So.... I heard that there was likely to be an info drop for Pokémon soon because of... something related to a YouTube embargo? What was that?
Gamefreak let some dudes play the first hour or so of the game. And they may be able to show that footage on Thursday.

Maybe.

We’ll see.

You mean you in particular?
Well, kinda. The Uni WiFi is hot garbage, and Smash borderline didn't work on it, and having an ethernet cable changed that a lot, now everything's smooth.

However, you're still paired up with people on like 2 bars of WiFi, and it shows when lag just spikes in what should be a smooth match.

Hence me saying it's more clear on who is using garbage wifi.

I find it bizarre we haven't had an official Smash-type "sports" mode yet. The physics engine is built for knocking things around a stage so doing some sort of soccer/basketball mini-game shouldn't be too difficult, especially when even Ubisoft managed to do so with Ray Man 5 years ago.
DID SOMEONE SAY TEKKEN BALL?!

You know you guys want it.

So.... hmmm..... that doesn’t necessarily mean we’d even see anything interesting. Unless you can fully evolve a Pokémon in the first hour. They probably wouldn’t even need to reveal anything new beforehand.

That's the biggest disappointment with Ultimate for me, in addition to World of Light lacking some meat on its bones. The core gameplay, roster, stage selection, feature set, and item selection? All above and beyond. But when comparing the minigame selection to that of previous entries, it's lacking. We finally got Home Run Contest, but then that addition was given the clarification that it was the last mode that will be added to the game, which is disappointing. All the cool little minigames in Melee and Brawl are gone, particularly Break the Targets, Event Match, and Coin Launcher. If we could've just gotten one or two of those, the game would feel so much more complete.

Event Match in particular is a huge wasted opportunity, but I suppose all the Spirit battles are just a slightly thinner version of Event Matches.

So going off what I said earlier, pick a under/unused type here, as many as you like and come up with a concept for a Pokémon that would fit:

Fighting/Ground
Gonna pull out a Pokemon I made from my fakedex long ago:

Name: Joroo
Evolution: Level up while knowing a Physical Fighting-Type attack (Mach Punch is learned at level 28)
Type: Normal/Ground
Ability: Run Away
Example Attacks: Charm, Detect, Mud Slap, Mach Punch
--
Name: Brawlroo
Type: Fighting/Ground
Ability: Bounce House: Increases Speed by two stages when this Pokemon switches in.
Example Attacks: High Jump Kick, Mega Kick, Blaze Kick, Earthquake, Bounce

That's likely the price to pay for having every previous character and about a dozen more added in. Still a Tekken Ball style mode would be great. I really like Squad Strike being in, so no complaints there either.

I think the Spirit Board is a better replacement for Event matches. I think a Boss Rush would be the mode I'd ask for other than some Tekken Ball equivalent.

They have enough with Master Hand, Crazy Hand, Giga Bowser, Ganon, Gallom, Rathalos, Marx and Dracula. Hell, just add a health bar to Metal Face and Yellow Devil and there's two more bosses to add.

You know what erks me greatly? Restaurants with their "secret sauces" and it ends up being Thousand-Island Dressing. Jesus Christ, this happens so often that it wouldn't surprise me if it was some industry-wide joke or something.

It's gotten to the point that I believe the Krabby Patty "Secret Formula" is just Thousand-Island Dressing :yoshi:

I’m starting to feel like some of those Smash 4 Ballot votes for a certain character weren’t just jokes; the idea came back to me today, and while I know it would never happen, I unironically agree with those votes and want the character.

*cue Smash remix of SpongeBob theme song’s instrumental*

What? You thought I was gonna say Goku? SpongeBob is the childhood hero, boi, now put him in Crusade or Smash Flash 2 (please).

I feel like they solved the "too many characters" issue for Break the Targets in Brawl. In Melee, each character had their own special stage, but doing that for 80 characters would be nuts. So in Brawl, with its 36 characters, they just made five Targets stages that you could play through with any character, which I think was a solid compromise, and I don't understand why they couldn't have done that with future games. Well, in Smash 4, they replaced it with that nasty Target Blast mode, but we don't talk about that.

I feel like Event Matches got to be marginally more creative than in Spirit battles, since in all Spirit battles you can play as any character and can't have any allies, whereas in Event Matches you're often made to play a specific character to fit a specific theme and occasionally given allies to fight with you. Though Spirit Battles to get plenty creative in their own right, there is a bit of a nuanced difference that I appreciated. Before release, I was certain there'd be an Event Match where you play as Samus against Ridley, Dark Samus, Mother Brain, and a Metroid (the latter two being Assist Trophies), but that never happened.

There is somewhat of a Boss Rush mode in Ultimate already, at the end of World of Light. Beating the game leaves the save file right before the final fight, allowing you to replay the boss rush again, albeit you have to do the whole ascent sequence over again first. A more streamlined boss rush mode, with stage bosses like you suggest, would be a better idea.

A "Smash Ball" game mode could be really creative if they made a neat UI and implemented items in a certain way. I don't think I could come up with a design, but I know someone out there could make something fun and fantastic.

Say guys, in regards to Smash Bros. Ultimate, what if we had different objectives in gameplay, like minigames? As in, not try to knock each other off the stage, but do something else, like stealing each others flags or breaking down walls that lead to an item one needs to steal with attacks, something like that, in case we don't have those kind of minigames yet?
So, like Coin Smash?

Can someone explain to me what happened in Pokémon’s release schedule that we don’t have a Gen 3 or 5 Pokémon in Smash? Like, how were those generations not timely with a Smash game ever?

Gen 3: 2002-2006
Between Melee and Brawl. By the time Brawl was in development gen 3 was ending and gen 4 was starting, so it made more sense to go with a more current Pokémon.

Gen 5: 2010-2013
Smash 4’s explanation is the same as Brawl’s.

Ruby and Sapphire came out 2002-2003.
Brawl came out 2008.
Pokemon Diamond and Pearl needed to be promoted, and TPC already had a specific pokemon they wanted to push in the form of Lucario.

The rest is history.

(Also they added Pokemon Trainer because Sakurai really wanted the gimmick in)

Because they weren't the newest games. Fire Red and Leaf Green were new which Sakurai used for Pokemon Trainer and so were Diamond and Pearl which justified Diamond and Pearl. When Smash 4 came out, X and Y were already out and the shiny new games and gen 5 was just too late

Gens 3 and 5 were released as the earlier of two gens between a Smash game, they just prioritized Pokemon from the newest games (or Kanto pandering). It's not like they went completely unrepped, Rayquaza was a boss in Brawl, and Unova League is a stage.

That’s just weird to me.

Like, when I was younger, I thought “Generation” meant all the Pokémon games on one system. So Gen 1 way Game Boy, Gen 2 GBC, Gen 3 GBA etc etc.

Like, if there are gonna be multiple “generations” on the same system then why even call them that?

Generation is generally used to define the introduction of a new region with new Pokémon and characters.

Gen 6 had X/Y, Kalos and it’s Pokémon. Gen 7 had Sun/Moon, Alola and it’s Pokémon. So on.

It depends as remakes are often considered the same generation as the games they released after, FRLG is considered gen 3 depending on who you ask but the Pokemon roster itself is gen 1

I know that now. And that makes a degree of sense....

I just think it would make sense to only have the “generation” change with the system and have multiple regions just be part of the same generation. You could even probably tie them together in more interesting ways if you did that.

Oh well. What’s done is done.

Gen 8 starter evolutions please come soon. Then I can return to my mild enjoyment of the Pokémon franchise from afar until inevitable gen 9 speculation.

....

God. I just realized that I have put myself in a position ever I could find MARIO and POKÉMON under the Christmas tree this year..... I feel so.... casual.

Pokemon doesn't need a rep from every Gen. I wouldn't object to it, but that's a lot of unnecessary stress on Sakurai, even moreso now that new Gens are released every three years instead of four. If SwSh doesn't get a rep in the upcoming DLC, Sakurai could potentially have three Gens that he'd have to add Pokemon from.

To be fair. My parents are sick of buying a real one every year, so they’re finally buying an artificial tree this year.
Like I said before, why do I even go on Twitter anymore?

Imagine if it’s not a joke and Fortnite stays dead.

Imagine the freak out.
The thought of that makes me both easy and worried. My little cousins are huge on the game (I won't go into specifics because it's touchy to talk about them), so I'm scared about how this whole blackout is affecting them.

I have no plans to play it myself (and thank goodness my niece doesn't like it!), but to those of you who do play who are being affected, just stay calm and pick up another game like Crash Bandicoot or TF2.
