Plus I mean, if you take out Banjo for obvious reasons, as well as Geno, Shantae, and Dee for being spirits, Phoenix would only be behind Steve (who may have been killed by Banjo depending on how you look at things) and Sora (lol Disney).

I'd say Phoenix would make the most sense out of those top seven given the context.

Yeah Layton's whole thing is just that his fanbase has lost a bit of morale post Smash 4, probably due to Level-5 themselves currently being pretty quiet in regards to the next step of the series and that he doesn't have any (credible sounding at least) rumours backing him either.

Honestly, I'm happy that his support thread has managed to stay pretty active for so long despite all that.

Yeah. Where he’s number freakin 7. Your proving my point. He’s not a list topper.
Any character that can regularly crack a top ten will obviously have a large contingent of people cheering for them.

The issue with Sora is the House of the Mouse, which is a pretty big hurdle to get over.
Perhaps. That is just an assumption. Smash is a proven brand that isn't short on budget, and the games are only rated E10.

You already got it with Layton, he hit his peak in Smash 4, and after that, it was the Phoenix train plowing through.
I don't really think one effected the other though. If Layton's series returned to prominence I don't doubt there'd be room for both within the speculation scene.

As for Steve, we always existed, but you know, in Smash 4 times, Minecraft was... "cringe". Heck, it was "cringe" up until late last year, where everyone was suddenly sick of Fortnite and moved back to Minecraft.
You guys owe Vergeben a great debt for making the fanbase not outright dismiss you. :p

I think some of the people here are dead set on Resident Evil and DOOM, which is why this argument comes up often.

Speaking of DOOM, people are sleeping hard on Skyrim.
Actually, yeah, I saw something on Twitter like this:

When you put it this way, he isn't really wrong.

And yes, I know this screenshot is from Gamefaqs, but I pulled it off of Twitter.

I mean you don’t see that many Steve fans around here but that doesn’t mean he’s not a popular choice; Steve moveset videos get loads of likes far outnumbering dislikes, one reaching 103k likes with only 1.5k dislikes. A lot of fans are quiet. Steve even got within the top ten in a few polls, one on that fan-made Smash Bros. twitter that does fan ballots.

Same with Sora; you don’t see that many Sora fans on big Smash sites like this one, but that doesn’t mean he’s not popular. Layton and Phoenix seem popular, too.
Yeah, I don't see why we need to unnecessarily dunk on other characters--I believe in being honest and stating my views, positive or negative (and if that angers people in the process, so be it), but I try to do so from a place of humility, emphasizing over and over that it's my personal opinion, and not making grand statements. I've done it for Dark Samus, Isabelle, Incineroar, and Piranha Plant, and yeah, Steve (sorry)--characters that were disappointing to me personally or I downright don't like, but I try very hard not to dismiss the fans of those characters. And once I feel like I've sufficiently stated my views, I tend to drop it and let my past posts speak for themselves and not hammer it too hard. I feel like we should have whatever opinions we want on the games (i.e., nothing to seriously get worked up over), with civil agree to disagreements, and that respect goes both ways.

Phoenix Wright and Profressor Layton--I don't see it personally, though I know some casual gamers that would like the former, even over characters like Joker and Banjo & Kazooie. And poll after poll I saw did have those names on them. It's different fanbases, different niches. But if one did get in, I'd personally be meh, but still happy for their fans.

you don't frequent Smash Twitter, do you
No I do not.

I’ve heard of some immature Steve fans on twitter, but everywhere else seems relatively quiet and I never really bothered to look for much on twitter. Of course there’s a lot of nice fans too, with even the immature ones just being that way for emotional reasons maybe because of age, so I dunno why some people just focused on negativity. Of course I’ve actually seen a few or so polite fans on twitter have some jerk reply to them, so I don’t know, more reasons some are silent I guess.

Just know anyone using that grotesque render is a fake fan or a troll.

So Angry Birds 2 right now is topping Detective Pikachu for highest rated video game movie on Rotten Tomatoes.

However, Detective Pikachu is doing better in audience score.

The Smash circle likes to hang around the thoughts and opinions they've formed. Doomslayer at this point is probably the most anticipated character for reasons established, but it doesn't mean it will be the Bethesda character or that we'll even get a Bethesda character.

Skyrim has the same arguments that DOOM has to be in. Possibly more so due to being a Bethesda creation/baby.

Same for Resident Evil. A lot of things are aligning for it, but it doesn't mean it will be the Capcom choice or that we are even getting a Capcom character. Not everything relates to Smash. We got constant Minecraft content for Switch, yet it was Banjo who has absolutely no immediate plans that was selected.

please say sike

*checks rotten tomatoes*

82 PERCENT?!

granted it's only 20 or so reviews now, but irrc Detective Pikachu was in the 70 range around that same time, so yeah, it's outpacing it, for sure.

Never thought I'd see the day lol

I’ll say that despite me really wanting Resident Evil, if Smash Ultimate doesn’t have any Ace Attorney content in general it would feel criminal.

Frankly any Capcom series that wasn’t in Wii U/3DS that isn’t getting a playable character this time should at least get a Mii Fighter Costume or something.

Ace Attorney is a good pick for Smash simply because it’s a Nintendo staple, and would probably be hilarious tbh. I still need to play Ace Attorney... I’ve heard so many good things but haven’t gotten the games.

Resident Evil, as I’ve said numerous times before, is just massive. No other series not yet in Smash compares to its size. Not to argue sales, but simply that Resident Evil is culturally a big series and would be a worthy addition just for what I consider the last heavy hitter series for all of gaming.

Those two descriptions may seem unbalanced, but I can tell you that if Phoenix Wright were to be picked over Resident Evil, I’d likely love it and immediately play the Ace Attorney games.

Okay. So i’ve Always been curious on how the rules apply to one specific set of characters. Character like Starkiller (Force Unleashed) and Chase McCain (Lego City Undercover). Characters that were created for video games, but those games a part of larger multi-media franchises. How do the rules apply to them?

I feel people are gonna use this damn bear as a scapegoat to tell other people their picks arent good now
I wouldn't worry about it. People have used them and other popular picks for that matter since pretty much Ridley's reveal, I feel most people have just gotten used to the annoyance.

Thats honestly all I need, just to know people still want him as much as I do even with my super super auper low moral
Sometimes its the little things that keeps you going and I think that's good.
So long as the support doesn't outright stop, then we're good to go.
Even if nothing comes of it for this game, at least we tried and hopefully we might some results for the next game.

I feel like those kind of characters probably don't have much of a shot, but it would be pretty neat to have Starkiller in smash.

How would a Sims Character even work?

Well yeah. I’m not saying they’re likely. I just want to know if they’re completely ineligible.

Starkiller is a no-go but I think Chase McCain might have a chance

I suppose they would be possible, but they'd still have a lot of licensing issues.

Why not a RollerCoaster Tycoon rep instead?

His gimmick is building amusement park, and has two meters: The money meter and the excitement meter. The money meter goes down for every part built, but if a ride is completed the higher the excitement meter goes up, and the more money you get back. More money = more powerful attacks.

Final Smash is shoving all fighters in an incomplete rollercoaster, as they plummet to thier doom.
