By "legitimate" I meant a newly introduced character (bonus points if there is some backstory) who gain a **** ton of fans, and now is recurring. Which is why Rosalina first popped in my mind for an example.

But if we're talking about looks, I guess the general thought on Rosalina is that she's attractive. If you think she isn't then that's fine -- beauty is subjective. I don't really care if a character is "ugly" as long as he/she has some good character development or just isn't boring as a rock (this also goes for any other character). The problem is that in the Mario universe, story telling usually is never a strong point (except for some spin-off titles... but then Sticker Star came along. Which makes me worry about the PM/Mario series in the future as long as Miyamoto's around).
