I doubt the word originally meant ignorant, that is something I have certainly read from YouTube comments; however, there is no reason to believe that it is accurate given the origin of the word and an overt lack of a source to support that claim. Regardless, no, it is not a racial slur and the only people who interpret it as such are closet racists. It is a term in African American vernacular that is used almost exclusively in a positive or passive manner to address someone. However, it is not relevant. You can ascribe whatever definition you wish, even if it is incorrect.
