I've heard he does very poorly, is there a clear reason for this? He seems like a solid character to me, though I'm a new player and have yet to play in any tournies myself.

Thoughts?

It isn't that he does poorly, its that no one plays him. He isn't a bad character, and there are a few that can place with him, but they are so few and far between to make any noticeable difference on a national level.

im starting to see why ppl don't use him in top tournies...i just got back from a tourny where i got 3 stocked against melee1 (ice climber) who is top 5 in tx. i honestly dont know what else i could of done. it just wasn't possible to hurt him. i think im throwing in the towel... luigi doesn't seem to have the ability to compete at a national level :( meh im probably just speaking out of personal frustration

I played my first tourney a few week back and i only saw 2 luigi players but it was only in the friendlies after the Singles.... I would play him in a national tourney but to a certain degree... like if my opponent knows how to fight a luigi to where it can be beaten badly thne i would have use Falco and Kirby. Kirby cus WoP'ing with him is a drug i cant get off of.

I main Luigi because I've always mained him. I don't care if I get destroyed. Every victory with my favorite all time character means that much more then using a top tier

because he is not in the top 3 when it comes to best characters in the game.

its the same in melee. i would say outside of Mango, unless you used a marth sheik fox or falco you were not going to win a national caliber tournament. and it pretty much never happened until mango.
it will always be possible to break in to the top 10, or win local tournaments with bad characters.

but the truth is, if you want to be a national caliber player you should play the best characters in the game. its only common sense.

Yeah but I can't split up with Luigi...
Even if I became better with any other character I would not change. Luigi is too much fun.

This is the kind of thing I don't like about the Brawl community, it is too competitive so you can't really do as well with a character like Luigi.
I don't know what it is like to be in a REAL tourney but it sounds tough on the ol' guy.

Its really not so bad. As long as you don't go up against a good MK or infinite spamming D3 you'll do fine. I honestly don't think Luigi is missing out on some fundamental thing that would allow him to do well in tournies. nublet06 has a point though, on a NATIONAL level it won't happen, regional it still could though.

I agree with this statement :)

Luigi could be used more if there was't infiniting DDD's and MK, maybe Marth's too, they are the only things that top him.

But Luigi IS viable in tourneys, as Boss has shown :).

He was actually B rank once for a very short time, then stayed at top of C for a while.

Then, a while back, he was the LEAST used in tourneys. Lol.

i think luigi is a sick character, but he has no real depth, like you can pick him up and master his basics, and from there i think it's all about outsmarting your oppenent to win, not relying on luigi's traits to win. the only improvement i see in myself with luigi is just getting smarter, rather than mastering his traits.

it's pretty much been said already but..

-His match-ups against 2 of the most common and best tournament characters (MK & DDD) can be extremely difficult. Not to mention the handful of other match-ups that are arguably disadvantageous for Luigi.

-There aren't many good players that main him. It's more common to see him be used by good players as a secondary or as one of many characters and their placings aren't always attributable solely to Luigi because of it.

-Luigi's metagame hasn't / isn't evolving much (at least in comparison to more common tournament characters) because of the lack of good players using him in tournaments.

How is DDD a hard match up? Seems like Luigi's slidiness (don't know what else to call it) helps him slip out of the infinite grabs if you just DI away from him, and aside from that DDD is just a slow melee... MK though, I can see that being a really hard fight.

How did Luigi get out some of the time then? Did the DDD just mess up? And how do you do that infinite without moving? I thought you could only do the continued grab to the side, so you eventually run out of stage unless you're up against a wall.

Actually Luigi is immune to almost all regular chaingrabs due to his slipperyness (d3 and falco), but happens to get infinited by D3 so there it doesn't matter so much that he can't be chaingrabed normally.... :(

Yeah, he messed up. Some characters get thrown a bit further and can only be chaingrabbed by DDD as long as the DDD steps or runs foward after each throw, but with luigi you can just stand in the same spot. The problem is that you always move the same distance when thrown down by DDD, no matter what percentage you're at.

I'm pretty sure falco can still chaingrab luigi...

on a related note, i'm glad grab releasing doesn't work too well on luigi.

falco cna chaingrab if you di into and don't do moves. good falcos will do attacks afetr fthrow instead of atempting anotehr grab and getting naired.

I now second luigi and use him in tournaments sometimes. Hes an AMAZING counterpick character, one of the best in the game. He does really really against many characters, but MK holds him back. D3 isnt too bad, luigi is good at not getting grabbed if u dont play too risky, its still tough. Ima right an analysis on tournament luigi sometime.

Luigi is a poor choice for competition, because his worst matchups are all the high tier. Even worse, a large portion of the higer tier characters are terrible matchups for luigi. That's enough for a doomed character.

Wow guys I wouldn't say he's THAT bad tourney wise. His only REALLY bad match ups are DDD and MK. And without the infinite D3 becomes a bit easier. But most other characters I don't really see how luigi has that bad of a matchup. Besides maybe marth.
