Smashboards Creates: Video Game Brawl of Fame! A platform fighter with no Nintendo! (Weird Fighter Voting!!)

So I've been wondering, what if there was a platform fighter that had access to the entire history of gaming, except for one glaring omission... Nintendo.

Super Smash Brothers is often regarded as a gaming hall of fame, a title no doubt earned in part due to nintendo's own catalog of in-house gaming all-stars. So let's make a game where those beloved icons didn't get an invite.

We'll be covering every aspect of this hypothetical game, from items to stages to characters to everything else.

First, let's talk rules:
1. No Nintendo characters. no mario, no zelda, no kirby, no pokemon, none of it.
2. Video Game characters only, this is still a gaming platform fighter, keep that in mind. No goku, no bond, etc.
3. Third Party characters that appeared in Smash are still eligible for this game, just making that clear.

With all that out of the way let's start simple!

Job #1: Submit a character.

That's very obvious since Minecraft is one of most best selling video games and it became a huge hit among modern generations like Millenials, Gen Z or Alpha.
We can carry the moveset from Smash Ultimate, but we can give some new moves due to minecraft having lots of diversive items to pick for his moveset.

Hmm... this was one I kind of deliberated on, but screw it, why not.

Character Name: CJ
Character Origin: Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (2004)
Rights Holders: Rockstar Games

One of the best-selling and highest-grossing series in videogame history, not to mention perhaps one of the most culturally recognised (for better or worse), the Grand Theft Auto franchise has made an inargubaly colossal impact on the trajectory of video games as a medium - not to mention effectively bringing to life and unifying the idea of an "open world game". CJ himself is probably the best-known protagonist from the series, from a highly-rated game that fans seem to enjoy, and would bring a pretty unique vibe to this sort of thing overall.

In terms of moveset, I don't imagine he'd be lacking in potential. The GTA series has a massive variety of weapons you could pull from, and even just from San Andreas, CJ could use an arsenal including melee weapons like brass knuckles, a chainsaw and a pool cue, heavy weapons like a flamethrower or rocket launcher, more traditional firearms like shotguns or rifles, throwables like a Molotov cocktail or a grenade, and then even some of the GTA series' more unusual inclusions like the Jetpack or perhaps the ability to include some gang members here and there.

Given CJ would be one of the more unique inclusions in a game like this, but also represents one of gaming's most prominent properties period, I think he's earned his place.

Job 1: Kratos (God of War)

images (2).jpeg

Kratos is the main protagonist from God of War series,he is a spartan who lost his daughter Calliope and his wife and got into revenge to kill Greek Gods who are his family, after to kill the Greek Gods,Kratos went to nordic countries who he had another wife called Laufrey and having a son called Atreus.

Kratos is the most iconic Hack N Slash character and Sony character,he appeared in other games as Mortal Kombat 9,PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale,Shovel Knight,Soul Callibur: Broken Destity and other games

Kratos' design will the the games from Greek era, because this design is iconic and i prefer this design (but i don't hate the Norse era Kratos' design),he also uses both Blade of Chaos and Leviathan Axe to attack.

Alright alright! Thank you so much for participating in this first job, hope you stick around for future ones!

Let's review the submissions!
Sonic the Hedgehog ( Qwerty UIOP Qwerty UIOP )
Ryu ( darkvortex darkvortex )
Steve ( Tankman from Newgrounds Tankman from Newgrounds )
PAC-MAN ( Wario Wario Wario Wario Wario Wario )
Space Invaders ( FazDude FazDude )
Master Chief ( HyperSomari64 HyperSomari64 )
Spyro the Dragon (@Me)
CJ ( KneeOfJustice99 KneeOfJustice99 )
Kratos ( DragonRobotKing26 DragonRobotKing26 )

These are all great and iconic picks! And now it's time to vote on which ones you think should be in the roster.

Vote for the three characters in the list you think should be in the roster the most, the two characters with the highest votes will be added. You cannot put your submission in the top slot.

Here's an example with my votes:

1. PAC-MAN (definitely an icon in gaming and probably the most recognizable one, especially with Mario out of the running)
2. CJ (Honestly never thought a GTA character would work in a game like this before reading the submission, I'm sold)
3. Ryu (the submitter is right, he's the king of crossovers)

Now let's move on to two VERY important jobs

Job #2: Submit a roster size! (my only stipulation here is that it can't go under 20 or above 60)

Job #3: Pitch a name for this game!

(By the way, let me know if this was too soon to post, I'm new to this and appreciate any feedback)

  1. Space Invaders. Veritable icons of not just the arcade era, but of video games as a whole, I think the Space Invaders would be a fantastic and unique inclusion that'd really set the tone for much of the roster going forward.
  2. Steve. Even if he is already in Smash, or might be seen as "cRiNgE" by "rEaL gAmErS", Steve is the protagonist of the single best-selling game in history, a modern cultural phenomenon, in the form of Minecraft. That alone should grant him entry into this exclusive club.
  3. PAC-MAN. Similarly to the Space Invaders, PAC-MAN just makes too much sense to include - he's a long-running icon of the industry, has plenty of potential with a variety of appearances to pull from, and he's just outright fun. I hope we can add the 1980 box art version
Job #2: 28 characters. Tightly packed, but with plenty of space for experimentation and flair, whilst ensuring we curate the roster carefully.

Job #3: Nintendon't. That's it that's the name laugh at the funny reference

Job #2: 30. A perfect number that I feel allows for a pretty good and reasonable amount of fighters.

Job #3: Video Game Brawl of Fame, a play on the "video game hall of fame" title people often give Smash.

1. Pac-man (Waka waka waka)
2. Steve (Hi guys!)
3. Ryu (Sure you can!)

Roster number submission:
We can go by 40. There are a lot of video game characters to pick for the fighters.

Non-nintendo Video Game crossover name submission:
Video Game of Deathmatch

I know this name feels odd, but it could fit due to being a fighting video game and deathmatch is a gamemode featured in most video games (especially the multiplayer ones). Also it's a video game of deathmatch.
Plus it's a nice reference to MTV's Celebrity Deathmatch show.

Alright folks! I think we're ready to round up all this info. (Once again, please let me know if I'm taking things too fast)

In second place we have the Blue Blur, Sonic the Hedgehog! A platforming hero known best for his speed and agility, he's been rolling around since 1991 and I personally don't see him stopping anytime soon! Very glad to have him in our roster. Congrats Qwerty UIOP Qwerty UIOP !

Pac-Man Stage submission:
Pac-Maze
1693604194023.png
One of most recognizable and iconic mazes in video game popular culture, Pac-Maze. The layout of the stage is similar to Smash 3DS's Pac-Maze, but it's bigger (in terms of height of the stage) and it has more platforms.
The ghosts are still hazards, which they roam around the stage, dealing damage to opponents.

Occasionally, you could spot Ms. Pacman & Pac-man Jr. as cameos, who ar eating dots and killing ghosts on this stage.

Job #5: Same as Smash; but with the addition of Smash Attacks can be performed in the air. And a PSASBR-style 3-level bar with different Supers by each level, using special cancels like in NASB2, and if the bar is full and you don't want to release a Super to your opponent, it can be used to summon an Assist/Striker to the match.

Nintendon't, as good of a name as it is, feels a little too on-the-nose for me.

Pac-Man Stage: Pac-Championship

A much wider stage than the Smash 4 original. The ghosts would return as stage hazards, but if you turn them off, you have a perfectly competitive-friendly layout (fitting given its name).

Job 4:

Championship Maze!

Based on the Championship Edition series of Pac-Man games. I view this as a best of both worlds, harkening back to the arcade era while also feeling modern.

This neon-lit stage consists of one large main platform and 3 to 5 small semi-solid ones like you'd see on battlefield, these platforms will move locations based on what happens in the background of the stage.

In the background you'll see a large maze like the ones you see in the game, a pixelated classic Pac-Man will actually play through a round of CE, and whenever he eats all the pellets on one side of the stage, that's when the platform layout on the stage changes. This is a reference to how the maze changes in CE when pac-man clears all the pellets.

As a proper stage hazard, a line of ghosts can occasionally appear to get in the way and deal minor damage to whoever touches them.

On the potential concern of having pac-man play a role as a stage element, I feel like a pixelated classic ball with slice taken out pac-man would come across as more of a separate entity to the more modern Pac-Man look, the main concern to me is potential player confusion, which I feel this avoids.

I plan on making a Job #5 submission later, so stay tuned for that.

Edit: it seems like FazDude FazDude had a similar idea to mine, lol. I'll keep this one up as it has a different name and concept to theirs.

Job #4:
Stage Name: Namco Museum
Stage Origin: technically either Pac-Man Museum+ (2022) or Namco Museum Vol. 1 (1995)

A stage set in an arcade, with various arcade machines adorning the background layer as well as plenty of references to iconic pieces of Namco's arcade history. Whilst the image I've provided is from Pac-Man Museum +, the concept as a whole is loosely based on the Namco Museum series of anthologies and collections of Namco's various rereleased arcade titles, plus on that one Mortal Kombat stage (pic attached.) Alongside classic elements like good old fashioned arcade carpet, neon lights featuring different Namco characters and sprites, and some other little bits and bobs, there's also a rotating selection of arcade cabinets - including games like Pac-Man, Galaga, Pole Position, Mappy, Xevious, The Tower of Druaga, Genpei Toma Den, Baraduke, Sky Kid, Wonder Momo, Dig Dug and many others. All of this is purely decorative, I should note - the stage's actual layout is simple and no-frills, making it perfect for tournaments.

Job #5:
Given this idea hasn't been posited yet, I'll suggest that this game has a heavily simplified control scheme more befitting of a "party game", though with some elements that'd lend to characters being able to have more unique movesets on a mechanical level.
  • You can jump with the jump button, or you can dash by double-tapping the control stick in the direction you want to dash in.
    • You're also able to shorthop by simply tapping the jump button, or can longhop by holding it for more height.
    • By default, characters have two jumps - though some characters may have more than others, on a case-by-case basis.
    • Dashing does not function whilst airborne, and is a ground-exclusive feature.
  • All attacks are bound to a single button, coupled with directional inputs.
    • Attacks of all kinds can be performed - normal moves, more powerful moves, even projectiles and unique "specials"!
    • In general, directional inputs do not use diagonals, only the cardinal directions of up, down, left and right.
    • Some attacks are exclusive to the air, but may use the same directional inputs as some grounded attacks.
    • Characters may also have a Dash Attack, being an attack performed whilst they are dashing on the ground.
    • In some cases, characters may have tap/hold inputs on the attack button to perform different moves.
    • Some characters have command inputs, that require multiple directional inputs prior to a certain attack. This is on a case-by-case basis.
  • Dodging is removed completely, including air dodges. It's replaced with the shield/block as a catch-all defensive tool.
    • Your shield can be used in the air, though it slows both your horizontal and vertical momentum in the process.
    • Parrying remains in place - you can perfect-parry by releasing the shield button at the right time.
    • Maintaining the shield for too long results in it breaking, leaving you dizzy and vulnerable.
    • Some characters may have unique shields (similar to Yoshi's in Super Smash Bros.), though this is on a case-by-case basis.
    • Teching has been removed completely.
  • Grabs remain in place.
    • You can perform a throw whilst an opponent is grabbed by inputting forward or backward. Up/down throws have been removed.
    • Pummelling is also available by tapping the attack button whilst an opponent is grabbed.
    • If you're grabbed by an opponent, mashing buttons and quickly moving the control stick can break you free much quicker.
  • Characters have a HP bar. If it is depleted to zero, the character is killed.
    • The lower a player's HP is, the further they get launched when hit by an attack.
    • By default, a player has 100HP - though certain characters may have more or less, again on a case-by-case basis.
  • There are no Final Smashes or other "super moves".
    • Some characters may have specific "meters", though this is on a case-by-case basis, with their effects differing depending on the specifics.
  • Stages do not feature blast zones, and are more akin to traditional fighting game stages.
    • In cases where there is no obvious "wall" on the ceiling or either side, an invisible "wall" will be placed there instead.

Job #5 submission:

You've got standard moves, strong/heavy moves, and special moves

Standard and special moves are mostly as to be expected, not much of a change from smash aside from side specials being cut. Heavy moves are sorta like smash attacks, although part of the face buttons by default and now with a dash heavy and a single air heavy. You can actually use certain button combinations quickly for extra attacks known as Combo Moves.

For example, you can do an extra powerful finishing uppercut by pressing Standard>Standard>Heavy in short succession, or maybe even weird stuff like Up-Special>Heavy which reverses could make some sort of plummeting attack. One thing to note is while every character would have 2 or 3 combo moves, they don't have to be the same combos/button combinations, this hopefully gives each character an extra sprinkle of unique flavor. I would also hope this makes less experienced players feel cool for being able to pull off these simple combos

The game uses a health/stamina system. Every character has one super, built up via meter. And finally, the game uses smash style grabs, shields, and taunts.

It really should be a Pac-Maze stage but I figured I'd go for something different. Based on the first level of the game Pac-Man world. The Pack-Man 3D performers have always been extremely unrepresented in smash. We can fix that here. Players fight on a long bridge like platform. Here are boxes scattered around and parts of the peer may break. Ghosts appear here too.

Pac-Maze ( Tankman from Newgrounds Tankman from Newgrounds )
Pac-Championship ( FazDude FazDude )
Championship Maze (@me)
Namco Museum ( KneeOfJustice99 KneeOfJustice99 )
Buccaneer Bay ( darkvortex darkvortex )

Vote as you have before!

Job #5: Submit an Idea for Gameplay!

Job 5: The Gameplay

the gameplay will be same from Smash games, have jab, dash attack, tilts, smash attacks, aerial attacks, grab and throw attacks and special attacks, and i can't forget shield and dodges

And the gameplay also have final smashes but it 3 different final smashes, and they will be a mix from Marvel VS Capcom 3 supers with PlayStation All-Stars supers

And now for the new jobs!

Job #6: Submit a Sonic Stage!

Job #7: Submit a female character for the roster!

While we may not have access to Samus, Zelda, or Pikachu Libre, there's plenty of iconic women in gaming that deserve a chance to join the Brawl of Fame!

Once again, please let me know if this is going too fast, this will probably be the last time I ask this for a while.

Job 7:
Lara Croft

Who is Lara Croft?
Lara Croft is main character of Tomb Raider games, which she is archeologist traveling and exploring ancient cities and searching for ancient treasures in her games. She is very iconic character and she could deserve to be in Video game brawl of fame.
She was created by CORE design, a british video game studio.

How she could work in Platform Fighter?
Her moveset could consist of her actions from her games like shooting from bow or rolling a boulder in front of her.
She could wall jump, wall climb and crawl as her movement options.
Her one of super attacks could be, where she Rides on T-Rex and chases opponents in cutscene and KOes them instantly.
Her design is based on modern Games, but she has bigger bust taken from original games.

Why Lara Croft?
I nominate Lara Croft, because she is an Icon of gaming and she could deserve a spot in VHBoF Roster due to fact that she was one of female protagonists which it wasn't a common thing back in the old days of gaming.
She debuted on Sega Saturn and her ames sold huge amount of copies worldwide and in fact that she originated from United Kingdom, so it could appeal to both video game communities (western and eastern).

Thread looks interesting so far, I’ll contribute sometimes! :)

Job 7: Chun-Li (Street Fighter)
96A129D2-9512-41CF-BB95-3C10A8D86D06.png

Chun-Li is the first female fighter of the Street Fighter series, an international agent tasked with taking out a terrorist organization headed by M. Bison, a super-powered dictator who also killed her father, and happens to be heading up the World Warriors tournament of Street Fighter II. She’s the “strongest woman in the world”, but also a caring individual who has helped other fighters out, and is primarily known for her flashing kicking attacks. She’s also basically as iconic as Ryu & Ken, originates from the game in the series that was both genre-defining and is, well, actually good and successful compared to 1 (yes), and provides something different from the same shotos. She’s also one of the most iconic female video game characters in general. Moveset is already there, though if we can really embellish it, a Shadow Lady alt mode or some Gem Fighter embellishments could be neat, though I don’t expect it to be so weird.

Female Fighter: Madeline (Celeste)

While she hasn't been around nearly as long as someone like Chun-Li, Madelne has a lot to bring to the table thanks to hailing from a platformer which actively promotes wavedashing. Plus, LGBT/indie representation is cool.

Jill Valentine

HM - 2B but thought Jill made more sense to added 1st, RE is a long lasting, popular series & Jill alongside Leon & Chris are probably the most iconic series protags.

Sonic Stage - will reuse this idea from another thread

City Escape (layout by Casualias)

Occasionally a car will speed through the stage like Onett
