Alright, so a progress check just so everyone is aware. We are currently in the final stretch - we agreed on 22 unique characters. Right now we've got 18, and we're voting in two more. That means after this round there's only one chance left (before DLC, presumably).

So this space is very precious. What's the priority right now... getting new series in? Filling out some more supporting characters from our currently represented series? Probably a little of both in my eyes, so I'll try to account for that here. Frankly, it's probably about that time to start making those weird choices. You know, your Ness and Captain Falcon and Jigglypuff. A few extra characters that may rest outside audience expectation, be it someone they don't expect to fight or introducing them to something a bit lesser known or obscured with time.

---

1. Little Mac - So I think my main complaint with this roster is that we've slightly flanderized the idea of a "Switch roster". If Smash Bros was made today, I don't think it would be so corporate in its exclusion of longstanding legacy characters and weirdos from Nintendo's extensive history. Mind you, I think our roster has still managed to be fun and eclectic, but my point is that just because the series will debut on Switch does NOT mean we need to keep it limited to exclusively characters active in new games on the console. This has literally never been how the series operates.

As such, I think Little Mac is a great fit for a number of reasons. He provides kind of a pseudo "retro" pick - Nintendo always celebrates its vintage history in arcades and on the Famicom / NES, and Punch-Out is a mainstay of these celebrations. It's also perhaps the one that most obviously lends itself to a fighting game context, for reasons I don't need to elaborate on. And when looking at the roster as it stands, I think Little Mac embodies several archetypes that ought to be filled. He's a more "traditional" fighter among zany projectile users and big heavy hitters. He's a speedster, and he's a lightweight - serviced somewhat by Pikachu, but not especially present in any standalone character. When trying to solve the puzzle of which gameplay styles still ought to be accounted for, I think Mac is a perfect solution. And in rounding out the roster and its reach throughout Nintendo history, he does a great job at that too.

2. Tom Nook - He's my nomination, and I'll stand by him. I think if any other series warrants a second character there's a strong case for it to be Animal Crossing... but you may say, Animal Crossing is an inherently non-violent series and we really only need one character to represent that. Well, a couple rebuttals to that claim - first one is that Tom Nook is perhaps one of the most omnipresent Nintendo mascots outside the Mario cast, frequently shares the spotlight with Isabelle herself and has really found his footing in this role once again after the blowout success of New Horizons. So as far as important Nintendo characters go, he's one of the most essential in my eyes.

But beyond this, Nook has a personality all his own and various quirks and traits that inform his moveset quite differently than Isabelle. While Isabelle is more bubbly and carefree, Nook is more mild mannered and reserved. He's got a tail to whip around, he's got a whole money / shopkeeper theme to work off of, he's got two little nephews who would do anything he says. There are maybe a couple traits that could be shared across the Animal Crossing characters, such as some variant of Pocket, but this guy has way more unique stuff going on than a lot of people give him credit for.

3. Officer Howard - I'm surprising myself a bit with this one, but I felt that we could use another new series on the roster and this one feels uniquely interesting. With this character you've got essentially a "stand" character with a puppet mechanic, and given our roster's lack of duos otherwise (I'm talking like, on stage at the same time) I could see some value in exploring this unorthodox team. Officer Howard feels suited to fill a role not unlike Ness or Shulk in past Smash titles, giving a smaller series a shot at the action for its striking identity and moveset potential. I'm open to giving it a shot.

There are a few characters I should mention that I considered nominating. I thought I was going to rally behind Lucina, but I progressively felt a bit more okay with keeping it Edelgard for now. I'm open to this in the next round, but I think we have more crucial priorities at play as things stand. Ring Fit Trainee seems like the obvious "new series" representative, but I'm okay with a number of scenarios here. I think she could be a DLC character, but I also believe Dragaux as a boss would do a serviceable job celebrating this game. I've been trying to vote that through but no dice yet... haven't quite given up.

Cinderace is not a bad choice, but I'm pretty content leaving Pokemon as it is right now. The Trainer is a pretty clever way to just get the essence of Pokemon covered and a variety of silly little creatures while not giving it too much real estate on the roster. Mind you I think another Pokemon would be just fine, but I'm not that motivated toward it yet. I'm also unsure if Cinderace would be "the move" for me. Sami is a neat idea but like... Advance Wars remake only releases in the west, I feel like it's awkward to make the case for Advance Wars when they're not taking that initiative in Nintendo's home country. Just saying.

---

Job 56: Honestly, could we hold off on this one? This is pretty heavily reliant on whether or not we add Alph as a clone.

Job 62: Magolor (Kirby)

1730571489870.png

You can never be too sure what trick Magolor is going to pull when he arrives. He has no alignment and can help or hurt anybody on the stage with his gem apples. The gem apples have two opposite functions that occur randomly - if you pick them up and attempt to eat them, they will either heal you 50% or become a ticking time bomb (with a small window to throw it away, or at other opponents). It's your choice to take the risk or not... will you trust this friendly looking little guy, or are you keen to his charade? Has he truly turned over a new leaf? Find out for yourself.

1. Little Mac
2. Tom Nook
3. Lucina

Lucina was never an idea I considered before but I actually think she makes sense. Awakening is a pretty big game and makes sense to give a character, Lucina gives us a more classic sword user and also another female character, and is pretty popular in and of herself. Tom Nook is super iconic, and could be different enough from Isabelle. Little Mac is a good choice for our "retro" rep, which is something I want to have at least one of.

I agree with Louie, I think Pokemon is kinda fine where it is right now, is has three characters. Wouldn't be opposed to another, especially in DLC, but I think is fine right now. Ring Fit is someone I'd be cool with, she easily could have made it on this list. I just had characters I find more interesting. Sami is cool but I just don't think our roster is big enough for her. Didn't wanna self vote for Howard

I don't have a lot of time today, so I'll quickly go over the nominations for the characters (without much of an explanation, sorry):
1. Sami
2. Little Mac
3. Lucina

Bottom line is that I think we have a bit too many "Switch-era" fighters, nothing excessive really, but something we can and should easily fix with this and maybe the next job. Anyway, Sami and Little Mac provide for characters with a unique tone to them, while Lucina is a great, all-rounder when it comes to swordfighters and Fire Emblem representation. I might want to add another Pokémon during the next job, but for me it has less priority than rounding up the roster with a more homogenous representation of Nintendo as a whole

Fire Emblem is big enough to warrant a second rep and there's a need for a traditional swordfighter in it's lineup. Awakening is one of the biggest games in the series and marks a turning point between the old and the new, similar to Ocarina of Time for Zelda.

As Animal Crossing has two fighters, and Lucina is nominated, I’m going to choose a character from a dormant franchise in the form of Ness. While SSB contributed to Mother’s popularity in the West, the series was a cult classic in Japan, and I find this idea interesting for a fighter from a dormant franchise.
For a Bonus, feel free to submit two Advance Wars history cards.

I am re-resubmitting Little Mac
Job #32: Little Mac
View attachment 393826
THE OTHER DAY WHILE LISTING THE SERIES I WANTED TO HAVE REPRESENTED IN THIS GAME I COMPLETELY FORGOT ABOUT THIS GUY!
Ok, so, the whole deal here, at least for me, is that Little Mac and Punch-Out!! stuff in general make a lot of sense to be added to a Nintendo fighting game crossover, considering how Little Mac literally is a bruiser. In terms of playstyle, I guess he'd be somewhat similar to his canon Smash self, just way less polarized: his ground game and speed would be toned down a bit, while his aerials would all be much stronger, making for a rushdown, ground-based fighter.
I don't know it's just I want Little Mac in this game, especially now that we have ARMS stuff: let Dr. Coyle have a rival (admittedly, a Spring Man-Little Mac rivalry would have worked better, but still)!
I don't care if he is unpopular or anything, I just think he makes sense. With the addition of Sami we are barely getting to a point where the 2021 bias is not that high, but I think we could use a sort of retro-esque fighter and Little Mac, to me, makes the most sense.

Can we leave it open for one more day? I think this last round deserves some more participation, and I'm inclined to write up some stuff but it's pretty late and I've been busy through the week. In any case I'll update this post early tomorrow with some ideas if there are no other posts to follow.

I'm just gonna double post for the sake of boosting the thread, hope that isn't a problem. Gonna ramble a bit to make a decision.

Job 65: Tom Nook Moveset - Pretty happy with this, so I hope yall will give it a read!
I'm not going to map out every attack, but I'll just give you the jist of what I'm thinking and a few ideas about what may inform his playstyle. Where Isabelle is more of a projectile zoner and trap character, Nook will be more physical. He is a middle weight about the weight of Mario if not a little bit heavier. While I typically approach this under the guise of giving Nook some sort of bell collecting mechanic, I'm not compelled to do that here. This game is supposed to be simpler than Ultimate after all, and I'd rather not introduce anything too abstract or complex.

Nook will however, still use bells to fight. And this will be in the form of his Neutral B... Refund. This move looks a hell of a lot like Pocket, but think of it more like Mr. Game & Watch's bucket in theory. Nook grabs a projectile out of the air, stuffs it in his pocket and then exchanges its value based on however much damage it would have dealt. The bells you earn can be stored for later use and thrown back in the opponents' face, with three strengths available. A light projectile summons a single bell, it can be a serviceable offstage threat but disappears on impact. Medium summons a bell bag, a heavier projectile that also remains onstage for a brief period of time to be used as an item. At large this might be the most useful, giving Nook a strong itemplay focus. But a heavy, fully charged projectile gives Nook a deadly finishing blow to use at whim. Think the Limit Break version of Meowth's Pay Day, Nook glows a golden hue as he delivers a flurry of bells in front of him at his foe.

Nook's Side B summons one of his Nooklings to help him out. To avoid this being too similar to Olimar, consider Timmy and Tommy more as extensions of Nook himself. They will assist him and follow up on certain attacks, and occasionally serve as meat puppets to protect Nook's snout from being caved in. Both can be onstage with him at once, and have the HP of Rosalina's Luma. But once one is gone, it takes a decent amount of time for them to respawn so try to use this tool carefully. The Nooklings also extend Tom's grab substantially, so when they are present he has virtually the most grab range in the game.

Two things inform Nook's normal attacks. His stronger attacks, such as his smashes and a couple aerials, involve swinging bell bags around, with occasional collateral when a bell or two flies out of the sack (this can be picked up as a normal item and tossed around, by both Nook and his opponents). His other attacks take advantage of his identity as a Tanooki, spinning and flailing his tail around much like a familiar plumber on the roster. This is sometimes implemented in quirkier ways that take liberties with the character, or reinterpret Tanooki abilities within his theming. His Down B is a Statue, but instead of transforming he simply pulls a leaf out that transforms into a piece of inventory to which he grabs onto and plummets downward. Much like Kirby's stone, but this can't be used as freely. It may kill earlier, but the statue remains onstage for a set period of time after the fact and cannot be re-summoned for a period of time. Those things cost hard earned bells, yknow. In the meantime you can use it as a weird little wall to bounce your opponents off of, though.

And for his Up Special, Tom Nook takes Flight. Yes, believe it or not, this Tanooki can fly too. But it's not so majestic, he just twirls his tail a bit to get a serviceable but minor boost. Not one of the strongest recoveries in the game, but you can't expect Nook's little tail to lift that portly body up too high.

---

Since this is our last opportunity to add new characters, I'm trying to be perceptive of what we're missing. I've expressed before that we could use a speedier, glass cannon type character and Little Mac has been sufficiently nominated. I also think we need to stretch further beyond the standard "Switch era" stuff and Little Mac is also carrying this department, extending back to representing a classic arcade / Famicom era title which is IMO pretty significant to have peppered in as well. So as it stands Little Mac is an ideal candidate for me. And I like the nomination of Lucina too, someone who I almost advocated for last time because I appreciate her relative simplicity. Both she and Mac are more traditional fighters within the mold of a really wacky fighting game which, as it currently stands, has a lot of pretty polarized and colorful playstyles making this kind of ground work pretty necessary.

In the past I've nominated Fox McCloud. He also covers some amount of the bases I've discussed here, being a speedier character and having a sufficient legacy with Nintendo that just happens to miss the Switch. I think we treated him unfairly and I think he should be here. But I'm not sure I want to splinter support between him and Little Mac, characters who I'm envisioning filling a somewhat similar niche. They'd be very unique from one another but the way things currently stand it might be too much to ask us to add them both at the same time.

My mind wanders to other evergreen characters or recent faces. Had things not played out the way they did, I would be pretty staunch about adding a new Splatoon character right now - but Squid Sisters were promptly locked into an AT role (too early for a character this significant, IMO) and we simply have more team-up stance characters characters right now than I'm really comfortable with. And well, I could throw in DJ Octavio as an oddball superheavy mech character, but we did also put him in a boss role. Similarly to Ganondorf, I wonder if that's enough for the time being. Speaking of Ganondorf, he'd absolutely be a no brainer under other conditions, but since the character will have been on ice for some time at this point... I think Link and Zelda are doing ok as is.

Notable contemporary releases are Ring Fit Adventure and Astral Chain. I think both of these games offer strong potential, and I wouldn't mind just one more new series on the roster. Archetypically I think they would be pretty interesting, and I guess we don't really have anything like either of them yet. Ring Fit would probably be a momentum driven character who thrives on staying in motion to build up power. Or Dragaux, a big beefy grappler character - but I suppose we have Donkey Kong as well. And then Officer Howard, who would likely be some kind of puppeteer duo character. Despite what I said about the other ones, at least this wouldn't involve any sort of swapping mechanic or double moveset deal... or would they? Probably just more along the lines of Rosalina or Joker from our own universe's Smash, maybe more like the latter. I don't know much about Astral Chain so I'd feel a bit fraudulent nominating it, perhaps I'll just leave it up to someone who's played it, but I do like the moveset potential we could sponge out of it and I enjoy the idea of giving this roster its own Ness adjacent oddballs from underdog games. I worry it might be a little unwieldy or ambitious for this more downscaled version of Smash, but maybe if we committed to one single Legion rather than a switching thing.

Job 66: Bulborb (Pikmin)

...Well, this doesn't really align with anything I just said. At a crossroads my decision is simply to go for an abstract, out there choice. We don't quite have a goofy surprise character, and in the vein of Piranha Plant I feel like Bulborb scratches that itch while also transcending it and being a truly significant piece of Pikmin's representation "puzzle". There are two major components to this series - the Pikmin, who are effectively the prey. And their very environment itself, ripe with obstacles and more importantly natural predators. So yeah, this is a quirky random choice, but it's one that feels in line with the series values. And outside of Bowser, to some extent, We don't really have a true bestial character - let alone one with such an odd body type. Can't deny Bulborb's ability to stand out.

I also feel more confident tossing a nomination toward a second Pikmin character simply because this series has been edging closer and closer to being one of Nintendo's most prominent. It is decidedly smaller than most of the others we've granted a second character toward, but it's a clear favorite of Nintendo management and has been a strong presence in general Nintendo branding for some years now. Around this point in the timeline Pikmin Bloom will have just come out, Pikmin 3 Deluxe the previous year and Pikmin 4 development will be trucking along steadily. While I think the series will do okay with just Olimar, I also think a pick like this infuses the roster with an unpredictability that we could get some mileage out of. And honestly, I've always had an affinity for this idea, so it isn't just me trying to be weird either. I will take an opportunity to share this wonderful fan moveset whenever I have the chance. So... something a little different to consider. If nothing else, consider it planting the seeds for some DLC wackiness down the line.

Here are the nominations:

Pupp135 Pupp135 Ness
Mushroomguy12 Mushroomguy12 Lucina
LoZ00 LoZ00 Little Mac
Northsouthmap Northsouthmap Wario
Louie G. Louie G. Bulborb

Vote for your three most wanted, where yours is not first.

1. Lucina
2. Ness
3. Little Mac

I think Lucina plays a nice foil to Edelgard in terms of Fire Emblem characters, and Wario is more of a case that I’d like to focus on other fighters and them hold him off until DLC.

Job 67: Submit an Assist Trophy

I’ll nominate Pit, and he’d be based on his classic design as I’m unsure if Uprising would exist in this timeline. Also, he gets to use the Sacred Bow as his primary weapon.

Job 68: Submit a Boss

While he is a playable character in Ultimate, this is treated as the first SSB game, so I nominate King K. Rool. He is a popular villain from the Donkey Kong Country series, and I wanted something from a franchise different from the ones listed below.
As a bonus, feel free to submit four history cards and an item.
Lissa (Fire Emblem)
Frederick (Fire Emblem)
Rover (Animal Crossing)
Rosie (Animal Crossing)
For my item, I’ll nominate the tonics from Fire Emblem, which will increase one of your stats. Tonic abilities would be differentiated by color. E.g. Red increases damage and knockback

1. Little Mac - On a personal level, one of my favorite Nintendo characters from one of my favorite Nintendo series. On a roster level, a speedy traditional fighter among a roster of several wonky zoners and slow heavy hitters. I think his role on the roster is going to be a valuable and productive one.

2. Lucina - Another more traditional fighter, this time a conventional swordie. We passed on this in favor of Edelgard earlier, so I think the addition of Lucina will help balance that out and offer the same dynamics to the roster that we got through Marth in our own timeline.

3. Bulborb - My nomination and I think it would make for a really fun oddball character. Feel like the other two may be more productive additions but still, I'll show some love and hope more people may identify with the idea too.

Wario is taking a backseat here just so we can cover more ground beyond Mario. Ness, I love him, but it's a bit of a hard sell right now. I think we cashed in those obscure-ish cult favorite chips with Sami already, to be honest with you.

Job 67: Tiki (Fire Emblem)

In tandem with the likely addition of Lucina, I feel like Fire Emblem could probably use a second Assist Trophy as well. Tiki works largely as she does in Smash Ultimate, turning into a dragon and breathing fire on opponents. Except this time she uses her classic design - just feel like we owe it to some of the older Fire Emblem games to represent them, since both Lucina and Edelgard skew contemporary.

Job 68: Dragaux (Ring Fit Adventure)

I'm gonna give this one more try. Now that we've wrapped up our base roster nominations and we officially do not have a Ring Fit Adventure character, I think the least we can do is give a nod to this notable recent IP success story through a dynamic and silly boss battle.

Boss - Ashnard

Think Soren is a bit of an odd choice for a series assist imo. However adding someone else as a boss from the same game could make it more logical. Plus think there is a lot of potential in a dragon mounted / big sword boss to which Ashnard is the most logical choice imo.

Assist - Olaf

One of the few series on the roster with no assist yet. The original villainous side before Black Hole took over that role on gba. Would use a snowy / icey varient of 1 or 2 of Samis attacka that can freeze opponents.

Villager
Animal Crossing needs a base game assist due to its popularity.

Necrozma
Pokemon is one of the main four Nintendo series in my opinion, so having a boss would celebrate that.
