Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

There's the clincher right there. I wouldn't trust them at all.

This makes sense. I imagine the first two or three are ironed out by now, but the last one or two are still being decided as Sakurai and the team work with negotiate with Nintendo to see about depicting upcoming games or with third party companies (such as Cygames) about potentially including third party characters. Nintendo is likely finishing up negotiations now and it'll be finalized within the coming weeks.
Lowkey think everything was finished in done in late 2017.

There's too much work involved for things to finish in little over a year.

Next stop at misinformation station:

Imran said DLC has not been completely chosen. Which obv means some has, and some hasn't. Which is actually believable.
https://www.resetera.com/posts/14628744/

Can't find any comment regarding this made by Zhuge. If you could point me in that direction, that'd be great.
Thank you for the source, this puts stuff in a whole different light.

Suddenly the Cygames stuff is more plausible. I don't know how to feel about that.

I'd say Square is definitely the first purely due to how much we've heard about it, with Microsoft probably being next? The rest seems up in the air.

Gonna have to defend him here. His 3 videos before the Grinch was proven fake CLEARLY stated that Banjo was the only thing his source was certain on. They had zero proof of the other 6 but apparently have heard the names float around, so they assumed it was real. But, Incineroar was also floating around so that's why they were confused about the Grinch leak.

If we are going to call fake on PG's source, wait until Banjo is either confirmed or deconfirmed via DLC, because that's the only thing they hard claimed.
Agree as much as I think Banjo's chances are very low compared to Steve's. We will have to wait and see how events play out.

Ah... Now it makes more sense.
And the CYGAMES discussion make even more sense

>Sakurai go to Square-Enix first around last year while renewing Cloud licence, Get first licence and people start to slowly work on it, explaining why names can be heard in the office, Square Throw fake names, Nintendo is doing the same, protecting that characters
>Then he go to microsoft (with Steve maybe?) around begining of 2018?
>Around september talk with Cygames were ongoing and maybe failed
>DLC 4/5 aint decided yet?
God Sakurai, please end the Geno and Banjo memes, you can doooooooo it!

I never played any of the Fatal Frame games but I am glad a horror series got a bit of representation even though its not a playble fighter.
Ultimate was surprisingly nice to horror fans this time around, what with Fatal Frame, and the inclusion of Castlevania, which, while not horror, is horror themed. Really looking forward to playing on Dracula's Castle.

Also, my own personal bias but.....

God I want Fate to stay the hell away from Smash. Granblue has 'some' fanservice-y designs yeah, but Fate has a handful of characters that are more or less fetish fuel, or make me concerned that I'll go to jail just looking at them.

This is how I interpreted it. Like they could still reveal a character at the VGA's by saying "Hey this guy's gonna be in the game!" but have no full gameplay, maybe a model at most ala Mewtwo. That way the Spawnwave rumor and this can coexist.
Seems like a weird way to put it to me honestly. Though that could be it. Probably bad wording

I think the answer to counter this argument is:

"Tsukihime collab when"
Speaking of Tsukihime, I am crossing my fingers for Melty Blood in BBTAG. Other than that, it's bizarre that Nasu hasn't bothered with adding anyone from Tsukihime yet. I mean, he added some KnK reps already. The last non-Fate character I recall is Fujino, and KnK is more obscure than- actually, scratch that. I wouldn't be surprised if Tsukihime is less known over in Japan. That could be a reason why Ryougi Shiki is in FGO while Arcueid is MIA.

Imran:

"Not completely chosen"

Vergeben:

"Minecraft content, Square Enix character"

So we likely know the first two DLC characters since Hitagi said that Granblue may not even come through (if I recall correctly).

Square does seem like they'll be first, but I wouldn't try to decipher any order after that. For all we know, a Nintendo character could be afterwards.

Remember when Jack the Ripper was a 9 year old in a bikini?
Fate has the BEST writers. No hack frauds at all!

How do you think I feel every time I open Fire Emblem Heroes?

Like, I'm pretty sure their basic picture of Nowi would get me locked up in some states if I were caught with it.

Chorus Kids have a slim chance in getting in, same with Mach Rider
Mach Rider's only relevance to Smash is that Sakurai made a joking comment that he wanted to add the character just because of his name, but there's no evidence that he seriously considered the character at any point in time. Excitebike is a much more famous and relevant game, with an Assist Trophy in Brawl and a racetrack in Mario Kart 8, among other things. If we were to get a biker character, it'd probably be that.

Chorus Kids' only relation to Smash is from the Gematsu leak and a Rhythm Heaven emblem slot in the code for Smash 4. Otherwise, Sakurai's never commented on or hinted at them in any way.

As opposed to Takamaru and Geno, who have both been mentioned directly around two separate Smash entries and have been given Mii costumes in Smash 4. They would've made better subjects for the Grinch hoax, but for some reason they went with the other two.

Oh, darling.... Nowi is NOTHING compared to Fate.
Oh. ****.

Good thing I don't play Fate, then. I stopped opening FEH on my train ride to work for fear of someone looking over my shoulder and getting the wrong idea.

While Mystic was here there and everywhere in his claims, his claim that Lloyd was likely DLC is also worth noting.

Also, I'm sorry Papa, but I don't trust you when it comes to leaks. It's either a problem with your sources lying to you or passing off misinformation or a problem with your vetting process, as one of your sources was confident in the Grinch leak, which was proven fake.
Shouldn't the same go for Mystic? Since he claimed Isaac was in and playable. Not to mention his infamous "The base roster will be a lot better than the Grinch leak" claim?

I think what happened with Chorus Kids is weird.

If they got far along enough in development that they broke the 3DS (just as a guess), how many manhours and dollars went into a dead end like that? You would think he would try to salvage that by adding them to Ultimate unless they really didn’t get very far at all.

I'm hoping PapaGenos' source ends up correct, as they really were only sure of Banjo-Kazooie as DLC and Box Theory, but have heard the names of the Grinch Leak characters floating around so they were confused due to the lack of Incineroar, but was willing to believe it because of B-K if I understood everything correctly.

I'm only expecting Steve, though.

I mean hey, to be fair, Arturia being the obvious pick means she's clad in her iconic armored look, with possibly her Alter version as a costume. FGO's got risqué designs for sure, but she's moderately dressed. As for Spirits and Assist Trophies, you can probably expect Medusa, Heracles, Rin, Sakura, etc. for the former and EMIYA for the latter. None of these characters dress in any way tantalizing. You'd need to dig right out of the mobile spin-off to handpick the likes of Shuten Douji and Queen Medb to truly put out "those" kind of examples.

The "Agumon for Smash" on Twitter is getting stronger!
There are other guys using another Twitter acc to help.

And for some reason we will get updates on Digimon "licencing"

Is anybody else sad about the loss of instruction booklets with games these days? I remember being in elementary school and poring over the OG N64 Smash Bros instruction booklet appreciating the art and items and stuff and that fresh instruction booklet smell while I was in class because I couldn't play the game outside of my house and the booklet was that one piece of the game I could take with me on the go. The 90s were a simple time
Luckily some companies keep up that tradition (mostly indies).

Oh now I get ya.

Possibly if they've already been decided. Lucas and Ryu had their data left in.

Of course there may not be a Guidance/Codec replacement.
Otherwise, David Hayter is left with jack-all to do, so what could he be around for then? Besides possible WOL dialogue.

Sakurai still needing to iron out 2/5 of the DLC's makes perfect sense imo
Lowkey think everything was finished in done in late 2017.

I mean, they barely had time to market things as it is, seeing as the timeframe is similar to between 64 and Melee.

Amusingly, Ultimate does seem kinda like a enhanced remake of Melee in some ways inside and outside of it, when you think about it.

>quick development period
>every most noteworthy moveset clone from that game is here, with various degrees of changes
>many of its stages are present
>faster gameplay
>Giga Bowser
>Adventure Mode with actual Nintendo locations (possibly)
>Yoshi stampede

In the gaming industry a lot of failed projects result in wasted money and effort only to never see the light of day. I find those decisions fascinating.

Like how Star Fox 2 and Resident Evil for the Game Boy Color were basically finished but never released. Or games like Scalebound that seemed extremely far along only to be cut entirely.

This **** happens way more than we even know. Sometimes these failed projects only come to the light of day years later, well after their death.

I know I'm kinda sounding like an ass but...

I'd rather keep the series just 'away' from Smash in general, and I actually casually play FGO.

Between it starting as a hentai VN, between 'certain' designs just sitting VERY wrong with me *COUGHJACKANDABBYCOUGH*, I'd rather keep it out, despite Saber herself being very tame.

The worst Granblue has to offer is Metera, or the summer-beach outfits, but fanservice is Granblue is actually surprisingly tame in comparison.

I think Ryu Hayabusa has a great chance to get in :

1: Iconic NES game series up there with Castlevania
2: No stranger to crossovers
3: Had exclusive (at first) core ninja gaiden title for wiiu
4: Samus and Ridley appeared in Dead or Alive dimensions
5: Team Ninja developed Other M (yeah I know) also Hyrule Warriors and Fire Emblem warriors
6: Fatal frame maiden of the Dark Water was a wiiu exclusive, now Yuri the main character is a TECMO rep in smash as an AT
(Ayane from DOA and Ninja Gaiden series appeared playable in said title which also used the Dead or Alive 5 engine)
7: An abundance of moves and weapons to create an original move set that is way beyond any sword user
8: His series is still alive and a new DOA coming next year with an upgraded look
9: Many TECMO tittles have been added to the switch's NES library, Ninja Gaiden coming in December
10: Amazing series sound track
11: Many spectacular locations suitable for stages (Hazards Galore)
12: Simply put his design Bad A** and his title is The ULTIMATE Ninja.

There is the best chance he has and I'm guessing one of those 5 DLC slots is his.
... and TECMO sure loves their DLC money

Okay, Rex not getting in becuase he was just a bit too new before they finalized would sting all the more if they went back on those words bringing in a Fire Emblem character of all things from an even newer game, not gonna lie.

I personally am not for another Fire Emblem rep, especially if its another hero. However due to the fact that they did the same thing in Smash Wii U with Corrin, its a possibility.

Yeah, and yet some things can still be rushed, not to mention that risky negotiations and such happened in-between all the dev work. There's plenty to keep track of if one wants to make it before the deadline and still take advantage of a new console's release, I imagine.

I still think programming 3 characters to act as one is a herculean task that would be best saved for an installment with more time to iron things out. It was already a strain to bring back the Icies, the Pokémon Trainer, and finally implement Ditto as a Pokéball Pokémon without these guys adding more workload.

Unless they had the designs/moveset for a Three Houses character for multiple years now, I doubt we're getting another FE rep.

Hey man, it's totally cool. I get your gripes with the franchise. Trust me, I have friends who have their own sound opinions of who they'd like to see and vice versa. Honestly, I'm kind of excited for what this pack is going to contain. Even if it has one controversial pick, if that character makes bank, I can see a Wave 2 DLC happen to capitalize on the market. By that time, we should be seeing another cluster of characters both expected and totally obscure. That mishmash of chaos is part of what makes Smash's roster beautiful.

EXACTLY.

He's by far the most slept on "realistic" 3rd party pick.

What character do you think that the mechanics they have from their games would fit into Smash Bros.?

In my opinion, it would be Spike from Ape Escape, considering that the B/Special/Grab inputs only switch the gadgets themselves and you have to use them by manually using the right analog stick.
