I actually believe this leak, it’s really convincing, professional, and actually thought provoking, and I recommend everyone and their mother give it the time of day. It makes the ESRB Leak look like it was fake and is truly the pinnacle of perfection.

So I made a thread for this question but it looks like nobody replied and I can’t trash it (on mobile at least). But does anyone have any idea on how we might be able to get 8 player smash to work with just one system? I was thinking of something along the lines of 4 pro controllers + 4 GameCube controllers, or potentially (according to some) a set of two GameCube adapters work with the system so that would allow for 7 GameCube controllers and one pro controller for functionality. I know most games that people have used only cap at about 4 per system, though I expect Smash to be different cuz Smash. The FAQ that Nintendo states about wireless controllers specifically capping at 8 (in reference to the joycons as they work individually but count together) so technically should be capped at 4 with pro controllers. Any thoughts and advice on this topic would be much appreciated since I’d really like to get a full setup ready to go for parties and events to include as many players as possible that everyone who wants to play can have fun.

Also this was on my backburner but if we're talking reboot rosters? I've got one, though it wasn't suited for Melee's 20-some character roster. There's some regrettable cuts to some of my fav characters like Falcon and Ness, but I tried to focus the scope to the best representation of Nintendo's current all stars (more or less)

Spoiler: Trash Reboot

Basically there's a max for three characters per franchise (counting Mario spinoffs as their own franchise) to represent as necessary the scope of a series. FE or Xeno might not be as big as Mario or Pokemon, but they definitely need the use of all three spots to showcase the series properly. FE's the toughest series to pick reps for, Marth is a gimme and Lyn and Azura were added for moveset diversity and to represent the three 'eras' of FE history. Pokemon Trainer uses Blaziken, Greninja, and Decidueye to give diversity to the Pokemon reps. Star Fox and Metroid each have two reps since they haven't been nearly as big now as they have in the past, and two reps are adequate for giving scope for the series. Little Mac and Takamaru I see as both heroes of Nintendo's retro history as well as being neat Japan vs. Western concepts for games. Baby Mario is a third spinoff rep because he functionally can represent the sports/kart games, the RPGs, and the Yoshi series (though Yoshi does that fine on his own). I definitely think a reboot would keep the original 12 characters in reality, since they're synonymous with Smash a fair bit, but this is a decent representation for a modern Smash reboot imo. But I am probably wrong!

For Konami I want Bomberman but I supported Simon Belmont a bit longer. Couldn't think of a Current Gen Pokemon so I just went with Gardevoir because its powers sound cool. Abstain from Punch Out and Pikmin since there's no character I want. For Retro I was stuck between Lip, Ayumi Tachibana, Mach Rider and Takamaru. For other, I had to choose between Isaac from GS, Wonder Red, Saki Amamiya. I don't like having to choose.

Boshi has had a decent chance since Cloud and the Geno Mii Costume happened, he’s not too likely but is a easily possible Yoshi echo.

If I can just say something about this (not trying to stamp on your hopes and dreams, just using it as a jumping off point). NiGHTS is prime Assist Trophy material, but not a potential playable character. Why? NiGHTS can fly, freely; like, totally freely (yes, albeit limited to a 2D space). His movepool is super limited, too.
I can imagine a NiGHTS assist trophy though, easily.

When NiGHTS shows up, he does his little 'dualise' dance (with accompanying tune, people who've played NiGHTS know what I'm talking about), then starts flying right. When he flies off the right side of the screen, he loops back around and comes out the left. Whenever NiGHTS gets close to a fighter (except the summoner and those on their team, if any). he will try to paraloop them. Getting paralooped is an instant KO. If you get caught directly by NiGHTS, NiGHTS will instead grab you and launch you, recoiling off at an angle. After a recoil, NiGHTS will eventually come back, and will continue flying around until his time limit is up.

I mean he's got plenty of moveset potential like teleportation, creating beings from inanimate objects, pyrokinesis, generating magical blasts from his scepter, summoning enemies to fight (like Zelda's Phantom Slash) and the ability to create copies of himself. And I like magic users.

I don't know how likely Boshi is since he hasn't been in a game since...like '96?

There's no way that Angry Birds are getting into Smash Bros. over other popular characters and series. Minecraft, Halo, Monster Hunter, Kingdom Hearts, Sonic, every Nintendo series, and even more will get representation before Angry Birds.

Plus, everyone knows that Flappy Bird is the mobile representative.

In Brawl, Sakurai put serious consideration into both Krystal and Wolf. Both were heavily requested characters with potential for unique movesets. In the end, he went with Wolf because he could reuse assets from Fox, whereas Krystal would have to be built from scratch.

Basically there's a max for three characters per franchise (counting Mario spinoffs as their own franchise) to represent as necessary the scope of a series. FE or Xeno might not be as big as Mario or Pokemon, but they definitely need the use of all three spots to showcase the series properly. FE's the toughest series to pick reps for, Marth is a gimme and Lyn and Azura were added for moveset diversity and to represent the three 'eras' of FE history. Pokemon Trainer uses Blaziken, Greninja, and Decidueye to give diversity to the Pokemon reps. Star Fox and Metroid each have two reps since they haven't been nearly as big now as they have in the past, and two reps are adequate for giving scope for the series. Little Mac and Takamaru I see as both heroes of Nintendo's retro history as well as being neat Japan vs. Western concepts for games. Baby Mario is a third spinoff rep because he functionally can represent the sports/kart games, the RPGs, and the Yoshi series (though Yoshi does that fine on his own). I definitely think a reboot would keep the original 12 characters in reality, since they're synonymous with Smash a fair bit, but this is a decent representation for a modern Smash reboot imo. But I am probably wrong!

I suggest you break your max 3 rule (which you're practically breaking already with trainer) for one choice, and that is Peach rather than Baby Mario. She's just too Iconic, represent spin-offs better (and baby Mario used for that makes him worse as a Yoshi rep). If not, maybe an actual popular character like Ashley (Warioware) as a third spinoff rep. This is unless you just really like Baby Mario

Actually, I can expand on the idea. What if when you summon NiGHTS, you temporarily become NiGHTS? Since that's part of NiGHTS' lore, albeit simplified. You can freely control NiGHTS, and do everything they can do in the games (barring explicit power ups) until the effect wears off. It would make for an interesting Assist Trophy, and fully represent NiGHTS' abilities without having to limit them.
