Yes, and I saw it change drastically myself as I was reading them. D. Gray-Man used to be my absolute favorite manga back in the day, but the changes didn't sit well with me. I know Hoshino had no choice in the matter, but that's the way it goes...

Pretty sure those springs are their actual arms (for most characters, some have normal arms).
Maybe the others’ arms are detachable, and after battles, they just take their arms out of the freezer and stick them back on.
