There's no real reason for the third-parties to have a equal number of reps as if to fill some kind of quota. However, surely from Nintendo's point of view it would make sense to grow their relations with multiple companies rather than just put their eggs in one basket.

On a similar note, I'm guessing they'll probably want to keep the 5 DLC fighters fairly diverse-ish in terms of origins if they want to appeal to as many people as possible and persuade them to buy the whole Fighter Pass.

EDIT: By origins I mean genre more than geographic origins but I expect we could 1 or 2 Western characters (from Western franchises that it, not situations like K Rool) as DLC.

Oh no, I’m not worried about “equality.” A good character is a good character, and Capcom owns way more of those than any of the others.

The one thing is...I’m not expecting more from Konami, because I think the next clear addition would be Bomberman. But we’ll see.

...I’d personally be really into Goemon.

So I guess with Nintendo just recently announcing Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age's release date (April 30th), there goes my hopes for seeing more Piranha Plant gameplay, cause I don't think at this point the Direct is happening.

It's so weird. They could've pushed that limited-time offer thing and at the least we could see some more Plant in action. Gah.

To be fair though

I can’t see AT or Boss characters being promoted to playable in this game, they would definitely need to be promoted next game. Note also that since Ridley is now playable, Pyrosphere, the 4 stage that had him as a Boss, is now gone.

Characters that are Spirits, Mii Costumes, Final Smash Cameos and non fighting Stage Cameos though?

Cause see, Assist Trophies and Bosses are models WITH a move set already that are controlled exclusively by the AI and adapt to situations, so their collective geese are cooked wrt becoming playable this game. Final Smash Cameos however do the exact same thing each time in what is basically a glorified cinematic; Stage Cameos also. Plus they’re not technically fighting. Even if you can’t pull an Alfonso, you can change the palette of the non playable variant of say, Fiora or Viridi, when the playable version is on the field like they do with Chrom. You just can’t do that with Assist Trophies.

Mii costumes can be debatable like in Rex’s case but a miracle can still happen if there’s more than one DLC character season. And spirits are just upgraded trophies/a fancy way of in game role playing.

Do you guys have any wild picks that you know will never ever happen but you'd love to see anyway? I do. Namely, Madotsuki from Yume Nikki. Given some of the effects, I actually think that in the alternate universe where this is a possibility, there'd be some mighty fine potential for a fun moveset. Just don't pull from that godawful remaster, and you've got yourself perfection. Again though, I don't expect this since it's really never going to happen, but I'd love it. I'll settle for Miis, though. Specifically, a Swordfighter, for reasons most obvious to those familiar with the character.

Though I do think the roster, despite statements that have been made has been decided WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY in advance.

Also again its strange to me that appears in just about every Mario anything and yet there are no spirits relating to a normal run of the mill variant of them.

No, but they can pull a Dedede on Dream Land: When a Poke Ball or AT already has some presence on the stage (Electrode, Palkia, Moon, Klaptrap, Knuckles), they can't appear from their respective items.

Furthermore, I believe "OMG ATS ARE SO COMPLICATED NOW" is exaggerated. They still have a very limited move pool if you look closely.

We've seen that they can add spirits in the timed events. If anything, I'm betting Sylux will be added in a Metroid-themed one for Prime 4's release and Porky will be added in a 'Year of the Pig' event.

July 27 of this year marks the 30th Anniversary of the Mother series. A new Mother character in Smash or Mother 3 finally getting released on the west would be nice.

I agree with this to an extent, but I think it depends on the design of the game itself. If the concept is to have as many unique identities/characters represented within the game then the idea may be to keep Assist Trophies Assist Trophies, and so on and so forth.

I don’t know that anybody is “disconfirmed” until the DLC is done, but to be fair I don’t think any upgrades within the same game are all that likely either. We’ll have to wait and see, but I think there’s more in favor of entirely new playable characters and less for upgrades happening.

I like that, regardless of how bad all these tier lists are, most of them don't have a specific type of character at the top. Like, Smash 4 was dominated by fast characters with hard to gimp recoveries that can combo you to death or carry you to the top, it was boring and it favored a specific type of playstyle. Now we have all kinds of characters being called broken.

At this point, they might finally release Mother 3 overseas for it’s 30th anniversary and cross promote it with a Porky Spirit like they did for Let’s Go Pikachu/Eevee.

Porky being in wouldn’t be a very Nintendo choice anyway.

I'm positive it'll happen eventually, it's just about finding the right moment and method (regular localization vs remake), it's one of those Nintendo have on the backburner for when they need the hype.

Half Life 3 is just straight up never happening, and it has less to do with it having been so long and more to do with the state of Valve.
