Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Ooo! Ooo! I've wanted to do this for Zelda forever.

*cracks knuckles*

Here we go.

Characters
  • Link, Zelda and Ganon (as they are now, but give Link back his hookshot. Ganon is still loosely a Falcon clone but we love him like that now.)
  • Toon Link (redoing his specials to match WW: sideB is blowing air with Deku Leaf, upB is launch into the air with Deku Leaf, B is pull a bomb, downB is the Skull Hammer for hard read kills and his grapple is the grappling hook, functioning differently from Link's hookshot. Final Smash involves using the WInd Waker to blow them into a watery cinematic where they get run over by the King of Red Lions)
  • Midna + Wolf Link (Using Hyrule Warriors as heavy inspiration, work as a duo somewhat similarly to Duck Hunt.)
  • Skull Kid (Again using Hyrule Warriors as heavy inspiration, final smash is obviously the moon)
  • Impa/Sheik (not clones, but alternate costumes a la Olimar/Alph)
Stages are fine. I really like all of them but Skyworld, but since Skyworld has a battlefield/Omega version, it's fine.
Nice to see someone else support the idea of them as a duo! I've been pushing for it since Brawl, lol. I agree with giving Link back the Hookshot, as it was a very versatile tool and fit nicely on him. I like your rework for Toon Link as well; a little surprised Ultimate didn't give him anything new. Skull Kid is a heck-flippin' yeah from me, as Majora's Mask is my favorite Zelda.

I just realized something.

Screw Banjo-Kazooie
Screw Steve
Screw Master Chief

Cuphead for Smash. That's my dream pick. I know he's not a Microsoft owned character, but they're pretty much exclusive on Microsoft stuff, so I'm just gonna bunch him in.

Is it likely? Probably not
Would it be amazing? Hell Yes.

He'd be nice for people who think Mega Man has far too many melee attacks and could use more projectiles.

How would Metroid Queen work?
Would need a Ridley scale-down, and handle items with it's mouth like most quadruped fighters. Could release larval Metroids and shoot fire. Shockwaves. That kind of thing.

If it takes too much fiddling you could use one of the smaller developmental stages of Metroid too.

*pretends to understand the first thing about Metal Gear* Fascinating...
I swear it's a lot easier to follow in context but the long and short of it is there are several characters throughout the series with the codename Snake and Smash's Snake manages to be almost, but not quite, entirely unlike any of them.

Yeah, I've been pushing both the Toon Link rework and the Midna/Wolf idea since Brawl too. Toon Link's aerials make him play very differently from the other Links, but I feel like he's a total missed opportunity considering how many items are completely unique to him. But he should definitely be in Smash as he represents WW, FS, FSA, PH, ST, MC and TFH, so I'd keep and rework him then drop Young Link for a brand new Skull Kid.

This way, we represent the Big Three as general concepts, but more importantly the characters individually represent BotW, ALttP/ALBW, OoT, TP, MM, WW and, uh. I guess Hyrule Warriors, kinda, for Impa/Sheik? It's a way that every character denotes a very specific Zelda, and we get two villains instead of one, two Links instead of three, and two legitimate newcomers for the first time since Melee.

Too unrealistic, root for a fourth Link like everyone else.

Forget Sylux. Here's your perfect Metroid representation:

Characters
  • Samus (reworked away from 64 moveset a bit)
  • Ridley (slight tweaks)
  • Dark Samus (unique with Phazon powers)
  • Metroid/Metroid Queen (as a "random" character)
Stages
  • Zebes (re-imagining of the "acid level")
  • Lower Norfair (re-imagining of the "lava level")
  • Phendrana Drifts (non lava/acid side of Metroid, great music)
  • Aether or Phaze (Prime representation, could have cool mechanics)
If we were to get a playable Metroid I feel like a Zeta or Omega Metroid would be a better fit, a regular Metroid has a lot of issues given its floaty nature and complete lack of limbs (Piranha Plant at least has leaves that work like hands), and the Metroid Queen is like really long and fat, so scaling it down is super awkward, and even disregarding that I have a very hard time imagining it jumping around and being the least bit mobile. The Zeta and Omega Metroids might not be as iconic, although the Omega Metroid does still have a final boss appearance to its name, but they're more practical.

I'm a bit on the fence with Phaaze as a stage too considering Phendrana Drifts already ticks the Prime representation box, and the time you actually spend on the planet in Prime 3 is very brief. I'd like to see a Fusion stage in its place, maybe with X-Parasites that clone fighters, or Nightmare coming in to mess with gravity.

Without Brinstar Depths we'd also need a Kraid boss, while Mother Brain can retain her AT role. One thing I really appreciate about Ultimate is that all three of the original bosses appear in the game, so I'd like to see that stay intact.

How the tables have been turned.

I just wanted to be Homer Simpson...

I have no other explanation...

Then allow me to put things back on track. :D

Regarding 3rd Party characters we can so keep speculating on who and what could make it into Smash Ultimate here. I mean so far Erdrick has been rumored as the next DLC character announced, which would be really neat. But what 1st and 2nd Party Characters do you think could make it in folks?

I heard rumors for Impa and Zeraora before, which would be good choices but do any of you have some Nintendo hopefuls as DLC? I'd be all for Ninten from Earthbound Beginnings/Mother 1, I know we already have two Earthbound characters but I think he could work out really well. Midna would be very interesting, heck I'd like to see if they could give her a moveset where she has two forms much like how Zelda/Sheik used to. One where she's an Imp that rides on a Wolf (not necessarily Link) and the other where she's a Princess as seen in TP's ending. Dixie Kong would be nice but I wouldn't mind if she was an Echo. There are way too many characters who could fit in the roster here, I'm just wondering if anyone had some hopefuls of their own.
Ackshually, 2nd party characters don't exist, or for the sake of Smash Bros. are considered 1st party (i.e. Shulk and the Pokémon are technically second party as their games aren't developed by Nintendo, but they're considered first party). The term "3rd party" should actually refer to the consumer as they are the 3rd party in a transaction, but it's a term we use to refer to companies outside of Nintendo. A history lesson for the day.

Midna got AT'd, so that's not happening. If ATs get a second chance, then she's got to wait behind Waluigi and Isaac, who will be in the game if that occurs.

As for first party characters, Edelgard could be cool, but she's unlikely. I really want third parties as those are the really exciting inclusions. At this point most first party characters that should be in are in the game in one role or another.

I knew when I was writing it up that someone was going to single that out :p

I always hestitated to point things like that out before Ridley got in just because I didn't want to look like a hypocrite, it's nice to just not give a damn about stuff like that anymore lol.

It's nice that you stopped giving a damn even though you indeed look like one. Well, maybe "look like" is a bit much.

I love how it’s worded so calmly too, just “Hey guys I found this on 4chan do you think it could be real”. And then a week of ****-flinging follows.

Okay okay yeah that makes sense. I totally agre-

Is it weird that after I realized I needed Piranha Plant in Smash, I realized I also need Shy Guy or Snifit in Smash?

Yeah for sure. A Resident evil, Tales, Crono Trigger, Dragon Quest and even a Minecraft character would gather more hype than a Nintendo character that would be scraping the bottom of the barrel.

Speaking of which, is there any chance you're making "A case for Resident Evil" essay?

Check the original quote.

Those were the simple days, back when the fanbase was reluctantly tempering their expectations.

Seriously, **** the guy who made the Grinch hoax.
The grinch leak period was definitely pretty aggravating, and I can’t deny that a bunch of people got their hopes way too high and were attaching those who thought it was fake, which is very unfortunate to say the least. But I’d be lying if I said the entire debacle wasn’t also some of the funniest **** I had seen in months.

I used to hate :ultyounglink: so why am I silently angry at the thought of his removal?
Because adapting Toon Link to have Toon Link specific gear but not updating Young Link to have Young Link specific gear is dumb bias that makes zilch sense and I will call the police on this man to enforce my opinion as the right one if I must do so.
