Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Ashley is still in my top 5, man. I was really pulling for more Wario Ware in this game.

That AT still stings...

*Sigh* At least she's here at all...
Ashley not being playable is my only real bad Prediction this smash game thus far and it sucks.

I just really like Gengar okay, and Team Rocket Jessie & James too.

The Gengar line has my favorite Ghost-types with Mimikyu and Misdreavus not far behind.

edit: also Duskull because Sans.

I haven't been able to play that much online (been busy with Christmas stuff), but in the 15-ish or so matches I've currently done through Background Matchmaking, I've found a lot of diversity in character picks. My last session had a Snake that stomped me, a Zelda that stomped me thrice, a Pikachu I actually won against, and an Ike that I rematched for a pretty long while as we were trading wins and losses.
Those are some of the characters I've seen online. For a roster of 72 its crazy how I see almost mostly the same characters.

Don't have a lot of dedicated magic users.

We legit have 2.

3 if you count Bayonetta's wicked weave attacks, as you should.

But prominently when people think of magic they're thinking of stuff like Zelda and Robin do.

I think that's why people want Ashley they expect her to be something more along those lines of magic but in a ''cutesy" way.
The problem is dedicated magic user is such a limited concept.

:ultganondorf: or :ultpeach: are magic users, but nobody would say so.

:ultpalutena: or :ultlucas: fight like a magic user, but they really aren't.

Its fine, I don't really expect you guys to understand. Most of you guys are 90s kids, unable to relate a lowly 2000s baby like me.

I'll just sit in the corner with my nostalgic Pokemon generations, ranting at my shadow about how they deserve love too.

Wouldn't Ness and Lucas technically count as magic users?

It doesn't even really have to be cutsey. She's pretty much the only character that I feel can have a true fully (Or 80-90%) magic moveset that isn't something like a random FE mage or random nobody character. Robin's more of a Mage Knight and Zelda herself uses magic to enhance some of her physical moves. I want to see something typical of a Black Mage in Smash and Ashley was the one I felt could make it work well.

Simple rundown on the Ashley hype:

Most people here like her because we don't have a lot of dedicated magic users, she's a witch, and her themesong is stuck in our heads from the DS era.

Japan likes her because "ASHLEY-CHAN KAWAII!!!!!!!!~"

Why else do you think Japan adores her? She's a magical girl loli goth gf.
dont put loli and gf in the same sentence

My first pokemon game was Fire Red and it will always hold a special place in my heart, but I've also got to admit that we Gen 1 fans have got it really good in Smash. We have so far...
:ultpikachu: - The series mascot, who'd it'd be a crime to go without.
:ultmewtwo: - The original legendary, and the title character of the first movie.
:ultpokemontrainer: - A form of all three starter pokemon while other gens are lucky to just get one.
:ultjigglypuff: - A popular character who was lucky enough to have a similar build to Kirby and yet managed to be differentiated enough to not be a clone.

Yeah there's still plenty of iconic gen 1 pokemon left and Meowth, Eevee and Dragonite could all be pretty cool, but I'm satisfied with what we have now.

On the flipside I think Gen 1 favoritism is totally justified since it's the one people are most familiar with, and I think it's also a bit silly to be too caught up on "equal representation". As cool as Incineroar and Greninja are they'll never be half as iconic as Charizard and Squirtle to the general masses. Gen 1 simply has the most broad appeal, especially since Pokemon games are typically backwards compatible and Gen 1 Pokemon will always be relevant because of that.

Nah, I get it, Gen 3 is still the one I have most nostalgia for, even though I grow up with Gen 1 anime.

Since there is some Pokémon talk...
Pokémon is probably one of my favorite franchises...but...some of the Pokémon in smash just don’t do it for me for some reason.
Obviously Pikachu should be there
Mewtwo is awesome
Jiggly is actually the one I like the most..
Pokémon trainer is sweet too

But Pichu, although cute is meh
Lucario I legit forget is in the game
Greninja I also forget is in the game
And while I think incineroar is cool, just does nothing for me actually.

I’m not hating on the Pokémon in the game, I think it MAKES SENSE that they’re here...but with over 800, I would love to see a Pokémon that’s not a legend or a starter,(aka more jigglypuff type) like gardevoir, garchomp, dragonite, lopunny, nido-family,(if they could somehow make my favorite milotic work..)

I just think that would be a breath of fresh air and I THINK, a welcomed addition to the roster?

I think the overall quirkiness of Warioware and the idea of a dedicated magic user could be a pretty cool character. Ashley fit that bill.

Don't worry, she'll get her chance. In another seven years.

Gen 2's what I'm most nostalgic for since I never liked how slooooooow Gen 1 felt even back then.

My favorite Gen is represented by Pichu.

Goddamn Pichu.

With characters like these and the ones osby osby mentioned?

People mentally disconnect them from a magic user concept much like they would Bayonetta's wicked weave attacks despite the fact they are magic. Her mostly using her guns and gun heels also hurts her image as a magic user fighter.

With Lucas and Ness for example it's the ''PSI" of it all, people think of them as more of like Eleven from Stranger Things doing **** with their minds and it being a mental power like Professor X and not ''WOW HE JUST PERFORMED MAGIC TO MAKE A LIGHTNING BOLT APPEAR!"

And with Ganondorf and Peach/Daisy, nothing about their movesets ultimately scream magic. The closest thing would be Peach/Daisy's ability to float. The rainbows and magical appearing flowers don't register mentally as magic to most people for whatever reason.

It sounds a tad bit like the guy might be trying to get the girl drunk in that song without her realizing it, although it's vague enough we can't say for absolutely certainty that was the writer's intention.

Gen 7 is my second favorite gen, and I got one of my favorite Alolan Pokemon.

Gen 5 is my overall favorite gen, and I got...nothing.
It's fine.

Well, as far as "magic users" are concerned, I've always wanted a geomancer/environmental manipulator, but he's stuck to creating hands with his mind as an Assist, so...

Honestly I would say the Raidou games, Devil Survivor games, and the Jack Frost/Pyro Jack buddy metroidvania have just as much different from the normal series as Persona tends to, perhaps even more so for the earlier Persona entries.
Woke up from a nap and misread this as Raikou and was wondering who was talking smack about it, and then I remember how Smash Bros. pretty much has neglected Raikou since Melee.

NO IT'S PSI THAT'S TOTALLY DIFFERENT.

I would rate psychic power as slightly different than magic, though.
Eh, I guess.

I can understand the Ashley want since we don't have many magic users, but the other WW reps (particularily Jimmy and 9-Volt)

Jimmy: Oozing with personality like Incineroar. His attacks can consist of different dance moves.

9-Volt: Multiple Nintendo references. Can incorporate things like Hanafuda cards and old Nintendo toys like the grabby thingy while also referencing modern things like hitting people with Wii-Motes and chucking a DS.

There's others like Mona and Kat & Ana, but these two are my personal most wanted.

Of course, all you Ashley fans can keep wanting her, more power to you. I just want the other WW characters to get a bit more spotlight as well.

I have such a hard time with sweet and bubbly and nice Kristen Bell. Not saying I register her as a ***** or someone who would be unpleasant in person, but anytime she's cast as someone like a Disney Princess or this video?

I'm just like '''That's Veronica Mars/Eleanor Shellstrop singing sweetly." and it just....doesn't work for me mentally.

I admit, 9-volt is number 2 on my list of Warioware characters. A Nintendo history based moveset is pretty cool. But there's something about magic that just gets me, that's why I like Ashley so much.

Hoenn was my favorite region, the pokemon in that region were unique and the legendaries are fantastic.

That’s a good point...I guess look at top 100 Pokémon ratings, find one the Devs think could be a unique cool moveset, but also picking some Pokémon that aren’t either a starter or a legend/supericon. This way it could represent all the other like 750 Pokémon that aren’t a legend or starter.

May be a terrible idea...but I think I would be cool with it!

Hoenn just had the best music all around.

Prove me ****ing wrong, because I can't hear your argument over these glorious trumpets.

Aye, Hoenn is fantastic. Johto and Sinnoh are great as well. Honestly I love every region...except Kanto. I'm sorry, but the bitter hipster within me can't stand it anymore. Sue me.

Hoenn has a monopoly on Trumpets for some reason.

I think there are hundreds of character ideas we can throw out, its anyone's guess. I mean we managed to get the Duck Hunt dog as a character. I think the best way here is to use process of elimination. Speculating on what it won't be is probably easier than vice versa. It is clear with the Joker release, the team is really interested in venturing into other franchises that had no previous affiliation with smash games. So therefore I cannot rule out any character that happens to be part of a franchise not already in the smash world. Here is a list of what I think it won't be.
  • Nothing from the super mario franchise. We got piranha plant, like it or not, its probably the last new entry for the mario franchise.
  • Nothing from Fire Emblem. We just have enough of these guys at this point, if they release anymore some of these will grow stale and uninteresting.
  • Nothing in the form of an assist trophy or pokeball. Kind of obvious, they serve other roles in the game.
  • Nothing in the form of spirits. I feel collecting the spirits really lost hope for some of these fighters getting in as characters. I know we have Zelda, link, ganon, etc. as various spirits but I feel its just for nostalgia for past games. Some of the characters I wanted like Shadow, Bomberman, and Issac are already presented in "true" form on the spirit, and I think nintendo made there mind in not using these characters.
  • No anime characters. I've seen lots of speculation to venture into the anime world. However with the future release of Jump Force, which is literally a fighting collection of almost every anime character I can think of, so they would probably have to get permission from jump force creators( no idea who they are), but I don't think they would be in the business for doing the competition any favors.
