Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

So, now I've had some time to relax and reflect...

Yeah. Holy ****. This still feels completely unreal. Persona was one of those series I loved to imagine being in Smash but never really gave much serious thought to, yet here it is, popping out of absolutely nowhere. My main hope at this point is that they give the series a good selection of tracks (vocals please, let's not pull a Bayonetta), maybe even from the past games and SMT - Reach Out to the Truth in Smash would be absolutely wild.

Slightly bittersweet hearing Edea's VA in the trailer as Morgana, but honestly, I don't think I could bring myself to be upset at any of the remaining 4 characters after this madness.

Here are my current thoughts on Smash DLC speculation, specifically in regards to project plan dates.

I think Smash DLC characters were decided around the second half of 2016 taking Sakurai's word on Rex in the DLC project plan because of the XC2 announcement in January 2017 being too late and take the Japanese release of Persona 5 that came out on September 15, 2016.

There is no way Sakurai could have decided DLC earlier than the second half of 2016 without having to play P5 first to motivate his decision, especially in the case of third-parties. He may or may not have had early access to the game given his developer connections, so it is possible Joker could have been decided a month early around August, but given P5's lengthy playtime and Sakurai's comment on the issue in the Famitsu column, I think it is much more likely that his decision could have been done weeks or months after possible early access of the game. Joker could have been possibly decided around September to December 2016.

Right now, I do not think characters that debuted in Japan later than the announcement of Xenoblade 2 have a chance even in hell. Unless Sakurai clarifies further on the specifics behind Joker's decision and the direction Ultimate DLC will be headed in later Famitsu columns, this is what I firmly believe. I am open to the possibility of DLC being decided 2017 and 2018 though, so I am somewhat cautious of my theory.

There's a couple of Nintendo purists who are angry, but they're the same people who were angry about Cloud. Best not to pay them any mind

Yeah, but I still root for Piranha Plant, I think he has a good shot to be added to complete element triangle. We still only have one grass type.

I mean, he's in Q2 as a main protagonist, which is on the 3DS. Seems like a good fit to me.

I personally believe Nintendo decided the list, then Sakurai chose the characters in a process of elimination, based on the wording of Sakurai's tweets on DLC back in early November.

I think Sakurai knows best who would make for a solid, surprising newcomer choice more than Nintendo's staff, given his immense knowledge and love on video games in general.

That's assuming that the reason why Rex is not in Smash is because of timing. If that was not the reason why he's not included, like "he wouldn't be popular enough" or "we're focusing on third parties" then that concept changes.
This is just a guess but I think Nintendo really just wanted to focus on characters outside of the company for DLC. Which would be weird for Nintendo.

The mods keep locking any threads related to the Joker as “Leaks” and there are no mentions of him on the SSBU website. Is it another leak that got popularized or has Nintendo actually confirmed him? I don’t know what’s going on with all that.
