How many parents didn’t buy Jack and Daxter or Ratchet and Clank because they wanted to raise their kids on Nintendo. Just an example. Many of the game series I wish were still around were in Direct Competitin with the plumber.

Last I checked the systems those two IPs were most prevalent on handily outsold Nintendo's. That's also conveniently omitting the success of series like Crash and Spyro, who would presumably be targeted towards a similar demographic as the IPs in question. The platforms in question had userbases ample enough to provide a sufficient ecosystem for the game regardless of what the competitor was doing.

I can't help that you prefer the b-tier titles, but I wouldn't blame Halo for Metroid drying up for a while. Using a-tier titles to justify why b-tier titles of a competitor are infrequent is a disingenuous premise. If anything, a genre finding newfound success is beneficial across the board, it will have the opposite effect of restricting the audience. Final Fantasy VII didn't cause other RPGs to flounder, they flourished. Without games like GTA3, who knows if BotW would've come to fruition.

Moreover, it's exceptionally petty to judge a series based solely on the fate of a separate series.

Let's just say I fully understand how that feels...

But yeah, there isn't anything wrong with that either. Cult classics are nice. Not everything will become a super large franchise. Sometimes it'll be under a dozen games at most(and that's okay).

As for that couple that were sued? They made money off of roms illegally. They also chose the exact amount they were sued for, which was way less than Nintendo wanted. Even then, maybe next time people need to realize you don't make money off of somebody's property without permission. It sucks they might not be able to make payments for rent/etc, yes(which there's a good implication they clearly could pay for it, since again, they chose the exact amount which was agreed upon, significantly less than what Nintendo tries to get. The fact they came up with that number means they knew it wasn't an issue. So I'm going to call bull on the idea they were going bankrupt/having actual issues paying/etc). But the law wasn't wrong at all. They're blatantly thieves here. Thieves are not in the right just because Nintendo doesn't want to do a better job at making those games available for Download. They(the couple) don't own the games themselves. Now if they had bought copies and sold them(even if at higher prices to make a profit), they'd be fine. At least then they're not doing anything actually illegal. Resales are fine in itself alone. While it's true that you only are really paying for the right to play a game, keep in mind by selling the physical copy, you're just doing the same for the next user. They're getting the rights to play the game itself. So it works out.

It's hard to blame Nintendo for protecting their IP from thieves, really. Especially when those thieves weren't simply making them free for download and that was it. That wasn't really the issue in itself. They were using ad revenue to outright make money off of it, meaning they weren't even distributing separate copies for reselling. So Nintendo or the original companies for that matter never got the money they're supposed to get for selling items(this is actually extremely important. Keep in mind games are sold at a loss generally, as it costs a ton to make any, and that's not including the physical materials for the disc/case/etc. So a lot of employees get underpaid just to get the games out). That's a huge deal and Nintendo actually also in the end didn't push beyond the couple giving them a smaller sum(which was around... 10% of the max price, if I remember right?), which is very good on them. They were right to sue.

Yes, I typed that up after people agreed to drop it. Bleh. Anyway, I can't wait to try out more Mii costumes. I still can't make a decent Brian Mii cause there's no good Hat options. Viridi is somewhat useful for a costume(a nice nature staff, which fits Brian being somewhat of a Druid by design, bar the Neutral requirement some games have), but it doesn't fully work. He needs a cape or a cloak, not a dress, heh.

But you notice that another game series in the same genre is still going strong. You look into it and your not all that interested. But everyone won’t shut up about how great it is. Over and over again. It’s all you hear. Your simpers of “actually I prefer this” are drowned out by “how could you say that this game is flipping amazing” but try as you might you can’t see why. You start to grow bitter. Then you find out the people who made that game have acted like arrogant assholes and made really dumb decisions over the years. But their golden boy is so popular it never hurts them. That’s when you get resentful.

I know this probably still won’t make sense to any of you but this is how my gaming life was shaped. And my Media life in general as a very similar thing happened to me with DC and Warner Bros. I just wish I could live in a world where my favorite games also had huge fan bases and whole websites dedicated to them so I can be a real part of a community. But no. I’m just the slithering grind with the descending opinion here.

This place is going to have a Nintendo skew, obviously, but you'd have to be in the darkest depths of the most fanboy-ridden hovels on the internet to say Mario and Zelda suck and not have people voice a rebuttal.

Really the only reason why many platformer mascot has died off is because the AAA industry moved on from platformers to shooters. Nintendo just continue pushing out Mario games because they don't chase the industry trend wildly.

If Indie games like Hollow Knight, Shovel Knight and Shantae can see success despite the all mighty Mario still "competing", why exactly did J&D or R&C die off?

You can make a minute long cgi trailer in a month easily, but developing a character from scratch to the point where you can show a gameplay trailer in a month seems to be pushing it.

I'm really sorry you have to go through all that. But I just want you to understand why you're getting this negative reception, because of the place and time you're venting in.

Ratchet and Clank didn't die off though. It kept going strong and had a big success with the PS4 title.

Jak and Daxter is finished because Naughty Dog couldn't figure out how to continue it and later decided they didn't want to make another one.

Leaky never explicitly stated it was DQ, but it lines up.

• Marketing is concerned
• Nomination at VGAs is secured
• Game might not win due to a POLITICAL stunt (the composer of the game is a bigoted war crime denier)
• Pretty much all sources saying that the SE character will be the first one revealed

Hey, if DQ didn't win at all due to that the composer of the game was asshole who loves to deny war crime that was committed in WWII. Nintendo might turn some chairs around so they may have another chance at announcing the surprise DQ smash reveal instead of announcing it right after DQ as winner announcment.

But as far I am concerned, there's chance that we get 2 musics like Final Fantasy due to DQ composer being difficult at all to deal with

the problem with dragon quest is that the xenophobic homophobic war crime denying composer has absolute control over the series' music due to rights reasons, and can decide whether or not the western versions of the game will even get the orchestral versions

It's been just over 2 years since the last one and Spider-Man has been Insomniac's highest profile release in that time (and ever really but not too surprising given the IP and advertising push).

Considering out of Jak, Sly and Ratchet, it was the only one to really continue strong, I'd be surprised if Insomniac stopped it completely. I can see not getting Ratchet as often if Insomniac continues with Spider-Man, but I'd be shocked if it was dropped completely. Release a new one between Spider-Man games or something.

Hey ya'll, if you want to feel really warm inside and get hype for the VGAs / Smash Ultimate's release, go marathon 64's intro, Melee's intro, Brawl's reveal trailer, the Sonic reveal trailer, all of Smash 4's reveals, Smash Ultimate's teaser, Everyone Is Here, and each of Ultimate's newcomer trailers in chronological order.

Really get a feeling for what these 19 years have been building up to and the sheer scope of it all. Almost brings a tear to my eye.

Frankly the main reason behind the decline of Jak & Daxter and Rachet and Clank is not Mario or Zelda or anything, it's Uncharted, TLoU, Spiderman, etc.

Naughty Dog and Insomniac are pretty busy nowadays.
