The DQ thing is my speculation.

My bet is on Sora/Geno/DQ character.
Sora was turned down because Square wanted a character they own and don't want to deal with Disney, cue annoyed Nomura. Explains why Verge was told Sora ain't it too.
It's either Geno or the DQ character at this point imo.

So based on recent rumors around the Square Enix Rep. My guess has been changed to Sephiroth, if that rumor of the character rejected by Square is indeed Erdrick/Slime.

Nope. Sephiroth is still insanely popular. However when it comes to Smash and with finite space for new characters, you’re gonna hear hate.

I find it hard to believe it's Sephiroth tbh and I don't see why Square would be so adamant about turning down a DQ character.
The only other character I could see them just going "nope" is Geno if they just think he's too much of a joke but it being Sora just fits the narrative much better.

I saw him as a character hard to add due to Sakurai’s comments in the past, so i mostly asked about Dark Samus, Sylux and K.Rool instead.

Before Skylanders Imaginators and N.Sane Trilogy, Crash was the same deal: i wanted him a lot, but he needed a good comeback first.

I'm betting on either Geno or Sephiroth at this point. A DQ character was probably the one turned down immediately, while Crono and Sora may have never been seriously considered.

It is Smash. Everyone except the original 8, Luigi, Peach, Bowser, Zelda, Villager, Dedede, Meta Knight, Diddy, Wario, and Olimar got hate on the day of their reveal for one reason or another.

Well, I went to check if it's something I can say-
But in my ends, what I heard was that Sora had Conflincting information as back as mid-november. (Which two people in that thread could verify as something I did say) Which seems to weirdly follow the Narative that is presented here that creator want said characters in, but square are being assholes about it and were trying to make them reconsider it.

I only heard later on, after the DM leak a few days before it publicly leak that Vergeben said he wasn't the one.

So I'm surprised about it myself-

I am happy as a Metroid fan for the stuff of the franchise present in Ultimate, and with everything in the game that people enjoy.

Just weighing in my opinion, I know **** all about what truly could have happened but it seems likely to me given the right holders they would have to go through for DQ. I think Shish's take on it is just as plausible, maybe moreso than mine.

Even i, who was against the idea at first, ended up accepting the thing.

Okay so my speculation about the Square debacle.

The trio I believe (have in mind I have big bias for SNES era Square) is Geno/Crono/Sora, with Sora being the cut one.
I believe it in the scenario of Nintendo starting the DLC talk with SE a long time ago, like the Sora Yes tweet and the start SE dlc rumors ago.

I see Nintendo choosing characters who have big relevancy to their systems and not others. Sephiroth would be cut from talk here, since he is heavily linked to FF7, a PS1 title that represented SE changing from Nintendo to Sony. Cloud gets a pass because he is an icon of the franchise. (also, as a persona opinion, I think Sakurai wouldnt double down on an already represented 3rd party franchise when he has a chance to bring another one in)

I see Nintendo not choosing picks heavily preferred by one country with niche popularity in others. The 3 DQ (Slime, Luminary and Erdrick) would be cut here, since while DQ is really big in Japan, its niche in pretty much all other countries. (personal opinion, again, Sakurai has already expressed that he takes worldwide populairty in consideration, as show with Takamaru, but with the FE duo in Melee serving as an counter argument)

Nintendo would pick Crono for his popularity as a cult classic RPG heavily associated to the SNES.
Nintendo would pick Geno for the ease of his inclusion and as fairly requested character.
Nintendo would pick Sora for his popularity as a popular game and Disney character, since being associated with Disney brings populairty to him.

Talks for Sora would fall early because of Disney and for heavily promoting a game not announced fro release in Nintendo systems. (now this maybe reaching, but I'd like to also theorize with the Sora tweet from long ago. When being questioned about Sora being in Smash, a SE representative said "YES", with the tweet being deleted shortly after because it hinted at private negotions currently in the works)

With the remaining being Geno and Crono, two characters heavily associated with Nintendo with a following, the decision probaly was made by Sakurai or by Nintendo higher ups.

If anyone has any opinions about my theory on the talks, please reply. The discussions on this thread were a bit uninteresting for me until the developments in the SE case, so I'd enjoy to go further into this.
