Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

The point I was making is that the people who like characters outweigh the people who don't. There are a lot of people who like Metal Mario & Metal Peach and definitely a lot who use them online.

So even if they are the minority, they matter more. Unless removing a character brings time to add a better one, then they aren't hurting anyone.
I see your point. Which is why I acknowledge it was slightly comparing apples to oranges. But I remember those reactions and hoo boy, that was so negative. I think that is just what naturally comes when people see clones or skins as individual characters: "ANOTHER [character]?!"

Hey now, there's no need to come off with such strong language. We're all just having a conversation about how we feel about a particular clone (semiclone-ish?) character. This has nothing to do with self-victimization or cynicism.
Oh, no. It's definitely needed. The point is that they are not negatively affected by the presence of these characters in any way where as if they were removed, people actually would be.

So it's ironic that they are complaining when they are advocating for the ladder situation. It's like arguing for mandated traditional marriage. If I like a character then of course I don't care how much they bother someone else. If these characters really bother them, then good. They don't have to use them.

I can't really think of many other clones, but I could see a Peach clone of Daisy. All they would really need to do for it to make sense would be to change the neutral and down B. Also, make the heart and rainbow effects into flowers or something. I think that would be enough honestly. Probably different taunts and a different Final Smash too.

I can't really think of many others though. Maybe Dark Samus, but I think Dark Samus would be more of a Lucas than a Dr. Mario.
I think Dixie Kong could work as a Diddy Kong clone (Just use her hair for the tail attacks), although I don't think there'd be many people who would be happy about her being just a clone instead of her own thing.

I think the argument should be not that clones should be cut or not exist, what we should be trying to champion is for clones to evolve across entries and to become their own distinct characters that still have call backs and links to the original character.

We saw Lucina added in Sm4sh. She was not much different to Marth aside from the damage she dealt and the lack of a tipper in favour of a balanced sword. In this entry what we should be pushing for is for her to gain a more distinct play style, draw from her moves from Awakening, but still have her callbacks to Marth, because she is supposed to look/behave like him.

Look at Lucas. He was similar-ish to Ness in Brawl, but you can see that he is quite distinct in animation style and character in Sm4sh now, but there is still a connection to Ness. It makes sense and people love him.

Dr.Mario was very close to Mario in Melee, but Mario has evolved and changed since then so there is a distinction between the two. What we should be asking for is not for him to be cut or turned into a palette swap, but for him to become more unique.

Look at Wolf as well. He was clearly based on Fox/Falco, but he had character and behaved like Wolf. If he comes back, sure he will have similarities to Fox that makes sense, but he can still be made more unique without removing that link.

Clones are not a bad thing, they are chance for characters who people love to get in, even if they may seem similar on the surface. There is no downside to clones.

If people really think they are the victim and they should have their way when they want to remove characters people like because of their own selfish cynicism, then they deserve to have their tears made into a soft drink.
It's presemptuous of you to call my annoyance with clones "selfish cynicism". Again, I said I tolerated Dr. Mario, I was just confused about why his inclusion in Smash is not questioned the same way Metal Mario is questioned in Mario Kart. We're just discussing a video game at the end of the day, there's no need for ad hominem and any talk of tears. I'm not losing sleep over clones, it's a mild annoyance that I understand a few people don't have.

I was simply explaining my viewpoints on clones since every time I bring up the idea of turning clones into alts, not even cutting them, there's so much pushback involved. On these boards, I understand clone characters are beloved, since we are the people who care most about this game, but the general public hates them. Again, I'm not speaking for myself, but the general audience for these games.

If I ask any person, be they my friends, or random people who've known about Smash, what their opinion on Dr. Mario on Smash is, they'll scoff at me, asking why one character should get two slots. This isn't a small enclave of people either, the vast majority of people see it as unnecessary, so let's not write off the opinion as mere fanboy tears.

I also want to clarify that I like Dr. Mario the most out of the clones. Really I'd actually argue he's more of a semi-clone, my only real issue is the "same character" thing. The clones that actually irritate me are the copy-paste clones like Lucina and Dark Pit because I loved those characters and they have enough original material in their games to warrant at least being Luigi-esque semi-clones.

I just realized how Triggered (Not really) II a that X, Zero, Proto ManMan .EXE all got Mii costumes, but Volnutt and Starforce didn't.

If Miis and Megaman come back, pls Sakurai, I need my Starforce love.

Maybe even a Harp Note Mii costume if Proto Man and Zero can get one ehhhhhhhh wink wink

Building upon my previous comment, the same can be said for Dark Pit who is a literal copy of Pit. Because of this it makes sense for there to be similarities, but he has a unique character so in this game there is fair opportunity to advance his character and play style. Give him his staff, make him a bit more cheeky in his play style. It does not take much, but he could very easily be made to feel somewhat different whilst staying true to the canonical similarities he shares with Pit.

That sounds kind off animation-wise. I could certainly see her as a semi-clone with similar attacks but entirely different animations. Closer to how Wolf is. That could work and make her fun.

Although it doesn't help that the main reason she didn't make Brawl's roster was she was supposed to be a partner to Diddy. We don't know many details upon how it'd work, though.

Yeah Dixie would need some different animations and attacks. She's not quite as... "Crude" as Diddy is for lack of a better term.

Metal Mario shouts "Bravissimo!" whenever he does a cool trick. That's enough justification for his existence to me.

Don't forget "Mia Mama" when he loses.

I mean honestly, what more do you need? He might as well be Luigi he's so Un-Mario.

What I was trying to say is I'm proud to like stuff that people hate.
That doesn't seem like a huge personal achievement to me, but I'll be happy if that makes you happy. ;)

On the topic at hand, I can't see Dixie be a clone of Diddy. Homegirl has too much to pull from. The hair alone can make for an interesting and unique moveset (sorry Bayonetta).

Sakurai is obviously going to use source material from Diddy to create Dixie's model and some of her moves. It's easy and it makes sense.

Dixie's similarities will probably include the Gumball Popgun and Monkey Flip, maybe even Banana Peel as well as using her hair in place of attacks where Diddy would use his tail.

Other than that, she would probably be around Wolf's level of deviation, possibly more. I wouldn't mind if they made Funky Kong & Dixie Kong the newcomers because they share similar models to DK & Diddy. Funky Kong would be so cool as a fighter with his surfboard.

I think the closest Dixie could be is semi-clone as a base. Replace the peanut pop-gun with her bubblegum one and she could quite easily have the same side and down B. However, her character would not be represented through Diddy's sort of whacky play style. She is a fair bit more refined and less... savage is the only word that comes to mind, but I mean that in a less violent/severe way.

Ten out of eighteen pokemon types are represented in Smash 4:

Electric
- Pikachu
Fire - Charizard
Flying - Charizard
Fairy - Jigglypuff
Normal - Jigglypuff
Water - Greninja
Dark - Greninja
Psychic - Mewtwo

Your task is to add the other 8 types with no more than 5 pokemon. Who do you pick?

Decidueye, Scizor, Rhydon, Naganadel, and Weavile.

Grass: Decidueye
Ghost: Decidueye
Bug: Scizor
Rock: Rhydon
Ground: Rhydon
Dragon: Naganadel
Poison: Naganadel
Ice: Weavile

Obviously would rather have other Pokemon but these cover all 18 types.

But, but... Flygon actually has hands!
I considered Flygon, and I'd prefer Flygon but I think Garchomp is generally more well received. I already thought of myself with beedrill, can't I attempt to think of others with the rest of my choices?

But I'm others :p

Realistically Garchomp is certainly more popular. Flygon is one of my favourite Dragons though and we gotta have that Hoenn representation!

The fact that this game is causing multiple people to say they want beedrill in smash makes me happy.

Knowing that’s its canon that’s he works for Viridi and the forces of nature now I thought it would be cool to give him the weapons of her generals. Side special: Cragalanche cannon, Down special: Arlon Orbitars, neutral special: Phosphera Bow or Dark Pit Staff. And for his regular attacks use the staff like you said or have him use the Viridi Claws. Unless Viridi becomes playable, if so she should probably use them.

I like Flygon more than Garchomp and think he's more popular than Garchomp overall (might be wrong though lol) but I wanted to spread out which gens I gave love to and Jirachi is non-negotiable as long as I'm in charge. :p

That'd be pretty cool. Plus it would also act as representation for two of the Goddesses from Uprising. Pit with Palutena (although she is also in Smash) and Dark Pit for Viridi.

Ideally i’d want Viridi playable too as she has a lot of moveset potential and smash lacks a nature based character.

I am all for Viridi as a newcomer for this Smash (in fact, now that I think about it she'd probably be the second-most exciting newcomer for me behind Crash Bandicoot) because not only do the reasons stated in the posts above mine give us a fighter with a lot of fighting potential, but also because of the pure catharsis factor she'd bring and also for a potential further tease to Uprising 2

If they do make a sequel to Uprising, they'd better improve the control scheme. Having to control the camera with the touchscreen was a huge pain.

Mamoswine would be amazing. He could impale with his tusks for a grab, allowing his mouth to hold a weapon.

I thought it was fantastic
I could see the problem for left handed people though

Either way with a new one we would have multiple control schemes
