Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

You're probably right, even if they port Melee over to the Switch, CRTs will still be optimal for the game because they have less display lag than modern displays by nature and I don't think it's possible to play Switch games on CRT outside of using third party adapters HDMI to AV adapters which may or may not create more lag, but either way, whether it's on Gamecube or Switch, I think it'll still be played on CRT lol.
It's the question on how long that can go on for. As you said yourself the ability to convert a modern console to a CRT without input lag is going to get harder in addition to CRT themselves are becoming harder to actually find. I may be unfamiliar with other fighting game communities but are CRTs used anywhere else other then Melee?

I made a quick comic to illustrate how I think Sakurai will add Elma and Rex in Smash Switch.

It was fun to make, and I hope you get some idea on how I interpret both Elma and Rex's additions.

I say we wait another month before "panicking" over what this game is about.

If we dont get a Direct within the next month then E3 it is, imo. So be it. They could be planning a huge Smash segment for all we know. Oh wait, we do know. There is a tournament to be played.

Why do you want to bring back Pichu and Young Link? Not every character has to return, especially since Pichu was a joke character and unless we get a Majora's Mask-inspired Young Link, there's no reason to have two Link clones.
Regardless of what game the Young Link would be inspired from, it doesn't seem like there's really a good reason to add a second Link clone. The Marth trio get enough hate already. Imagine how much worse it would be with three versions of the same guy.

If Sakurai wants to add clone characters, then he should really think about making a clone of a newer smash character. Feels like he keeps revisiting the same characters (Mario, Link, Fox, Marth).

might as well bring back the last 3 charas left out. :pichumelee:'s gonna pichu, and we already have a double-clone of a character (:4lucina:, :4feroy:) so why not :younglinkmelee:? be slap-easy to do
Yes but Roy and Lucina are two distinct characters (even though I think Lucina should stay an alt because her playstyle is way too similar). It's the same reason Dr. Mario should be an alt, he's not actually a unique character. Young Link and Toon Link fill the exact same niche.

I'm thinking at E3 they'll show off some new characters during the Treehouse Live. It would be a good way to insentvise people into watching it. Of course they would show off new characters at the Digital Event as well. They could also show off more gameplay I suppose.

All I can say to this is that you would really hate the Pokémon hype cycle, because the short hype cycle has existed for that series since time immemorial, and the period of silence without any idea on what the game is has defined the last 3 installments. Not to mention, as most other people have said, the majority of the 2017-18 Switch games. Actually the only ones that weren't given periods of silence about what they were were Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Tropical Freeze, Hyrule and Pokkén Tournament DX: the ports of Nintendo's Switch lineup, so your original point about Smash's silence undermines your own argument, as Nintendo has been very transparent about what's a port.
so why no material about smash? there have to be assets ready for showing, they're gonna hold a tournament for ****s sake. and, again, this is true of the new **** that came out too, being botw, odyssey, and spla2n. even ****ing octopath had assets being shown.

also, the silence regarding ARMS, splat2n, xb2, etc was alright because we had gameplay trailers. we had something we could point at and say 'that's what the videogame will look like and is about'. we do not have that for smash right now. smash is a massive ****ing deal, and them being so quiet about it is screaming 'port job'. as i've said over and over, this is not a bad thing, but people might get salty on it once the 4wiiu menu music kicks in.

hell, even if i could just see the smash loading ball i'd know if it were a port or not.
Not trying to make this “CHRISTIAN MOMS AGAINST SMASH BROS” but why are you cursing so much? It doesn’t make your point anymore valid. We can’t even see the words. It’s just making me visualize a guy screaming at message board on his computer. Calm down. It’s video game speculation.

What stages are you hoping to see in Smash Switch?
More than any new, fancy stages, I want to see some of the better ones from Smash 3DS upgraded to glorious HD. I feel like as far as new stages go, the 3DS game had the edge over the hyper-gimmicky ones from Wii U.
My personal choices would be Tortimer Island and Arena Ferox, mainly because they are concrete locations in the series they represent, instead of weird amalgimations of series staples like Smashville or Castle Siege.

EDIT: I forgot Magicant and Pac-Maze, which were awesome as well. Also as long as I’m talking about old stages returning, I reaaally want Melee’s Kongo Jungle back, it was one of my faves.

I think because they know how big of a deal Smash is they want to release all the hype at once at E3 rather than disperse it over a longer cycle. Makes me think they don't have much at E3 besides smash.

You bring up a good point, the 3DS' limitation actually worked to give it tighter, more playable stages. I hated how great concepts in the Wii U version like Palutena's Temple and Great Cave Offensive were ruined by being enormous.

The 3DS also had a much better Pac Man stage than the garbage Wii U one.

Please, make more of this.
I second this, we need more creativity on this board mixed in with speculation.

I really hope it won't be like that again. Breath of the Wild was amazing to watch for the first 30 minutes, but eventually I got bored of watching gameplay and just wanted to play the game.

So based on E-3 possibly giving us more Smash related news, how many characters do you expect (Vets and newcomers) to be confirmed? I'm thinking at least 20 characters due to the tournament

What are some ideas you guys have for potential newcomers' entrance animations?
The Inklings' one ought to be the entrance transformation from Splatoon itself:

For Mimikyu, all it needs is flashing its eyes. Maybe turning around to face the "camera" first and then giving the eye, like the first part of the gif. Though being a Pokémon, it would probably just jump out of a Pokéball.

...and if Paper Mario ever makes it, I'd kinda want a ball of crumpled paper to roll onto the stage and then unfold into Paper Mario.

I wish you would have just posted this in the Mimikyu support to give it activeness since this thread is overrated now.

For Ridley I'd love a callback to his iconic Super Metroid entrance. Just have a patch of smoke appear first, then the eyes, and then have him disperse it with a flap of his wings. Obviously it'd all have to go pretty fast.
Dark Matter Appears DL3.gif

For Dark Matter this is basically what I'd want, a bunch of black clouds morphing together just like in Dreamland 3 (it'd have to be way quicker though lol) but instead of forming the ball form they morph into it's sword form from Dreamland 2:
Swordsman appear.png

Then after a quick poof of black smoke it'll be visible again with its clothes on and with its sword.

What stages are you hoping to see in Smash Switch?
Bowser's Castle
Iki Town or Ultra Space
Duma Tower
The Lady Liberty
Gluglug Lagoon
N. Sanity Beach

Waluigi would skydive into the stage, screaming, as he face plants into the ground.
Celica would slowly walk in and use her magic to create a wisp of fire, like her dungeon entrance in Shadows of Valentia.

IMO it makes more sense to post something where you know more people can see it.

I pretty much accepted that we're a small bunch as far as Mimikyu support/Smashboards.
I know the feeling, trust me. Celica also doesn't have the biggest thread around, for example, so a lot of my posts about her end up here because I can't double post in the main thread. :p

Mimikyu could be the Rosalina of Pokemon this go around.

Her support thread was small for Smash 4, but everyone had so much faith in Toad/Bowser Jr/Paper Mario.

No one thought she would happen before them.

I can see him pulling the ''upset" she did with the Mario rep last time. Everyone was so focused on why the others made sense that they didn't even think why he/she made sense.

It's the question on how long that can go on for. Not many games are using them if at all they still are.

Main reason, people moved on or they got a port/remaster.

Because Melee hasn’t gotten a port they have stayed there. I think a port would help but then doing one is still in the air of where and when given smash 5 is around the corner.

I’d like a port of old smash games but I can agree with a business flooding your market is a terrible idea.

I have to agree. It might be my bias as a Mimikyu/Lycanroc supporter, but I honestly think Gen 7 has so many viable candidates for Smash that an "upset" fighter of some description is honestly more likely than specifically Decidueye. Decidueye is honestly not that heavily promoted at all outside of Pokkén DX, isn't THAT popular compared to other Gen 7 Pokémon in Japan, and feels a bit too much like Smash fans are filling quotas that Sakurai is about to break.

I care little for Atlus or Aeolus, so that's half the votes take care of.

As for the other two, I think I'm going to stick with Ashe/Grey. I don't want to vote for what is essentially MMZ 2.0, and Ashe would be that one character where re-using assets and being a bit a of a grey (heh) area clone would make sense from their own story and lore perspective.

That is, assuming they go with a move set that borrows other Smash moves and not from bosses that exist in MMZXA, the latter route being the one I'd expect Sakurai to go down to some degree, but only having Ashe/Grey be in Biometal A when referencing attacks.

But as Yomi mentioned, Vent and Aile have really clean time skip designs.

Decidueye has more moveset potential than Mimikyu IMO. You have a lot more material to work with from a Bird Archer who is also a ghost than a unknown pokemon hiding under a Pikachu costume. I also can't see a Mimikyu jumping around the stage like other Pokemon. It seems weird.

Technically speaking, we have received at least 1 Pokemon newcomer each smash game, so we definitely are going to see a Pokemon newcomer.

I used to believe the Gen 8 Grass starter was going to be the one in Smash instead of Decidueye, but since Smash is coming out in 2018, it seems indicative of the idea that Pokemon will not arrive before Smash. So it's back to Decidueye for me.

If I could have it my way, that is the go to option.

Yeah, if Melee ever did get a re-release, I think the response would be mostly positive, or at least, it SHOULD be. Most other iconic fighters that got re-releases, the MK games, SF2, SF3:3S and the MvC games all received positive responses from their communities. Except the alternate artstyle in SF2, but that could be changed on a dime. And these releases had online modes for people to fight each other on. Do that with Melee and people SHOULD be happy.

I'd pick Grey myself. That dude may LOOK like Axl(with some MMX and Zero mixed in), but he FIGHTS a lot more like Mega Man X does(but with his homing missiles too). Give him his Charge Shot, a Dash Tackle, Homing Missile and a Slide(from Model "a", the 8-bit one) and that'd be the start of where to take his moveset.

Like others have said, he should take the other BioMetal attacks into his moveset, and if not those, then the Mavericks you can copy too.
