Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Based off the newcomers we got in Brawl and Smash 4, I still think relevancy is going to be the biggest factor in deciding who we get. Feels like most of the characters we got in the previous game were added because they were new and relevant rather than being popular choices that lots of fans requested.

However, one key difference with this game is that the window to choose characters from is much smaller. I wouldn't jump right out and conclude that all the newcomers we get will be inspired from the ballot, but if Sakurai isn't choosing characters based off of what's happened in recent years, maybe we could start getting more fan-favorite or older iconic characters. Or, to look on the more pessimistic side of things, perhaps we'll get fewer newcomers because Sakurai cant think of many relevant characters to add.
At least the Smash Ballot can be used to help fill the newcomer roster with a couple of characters that scored well on it. Outside of that, there's still plenty of characters Sakurai could use like Paper Mario, Captain Toad, Bandana Dee, Isabelle, Excite Biker, Dixie Kong and many more that we overlook. And that's solely looking at Nintendo characters.

Hopefully, if Steve makes it into Smash, he won't be as broken as he was in Super Meat Boy.

Angry Birds is the most downloaded freemium game series of all time and is arguably more recognizable than Minecraft. It has also released on multiple Nintendo systems. Does that mean that a character from Angry Birds should be in Smash as well?

I am not hating on Steve or saying that he has 0% chance of making it, but I would personally be disappointed if he was included. Including Steve just because Minecraft is extremely popular would open the floodgates for all other popular gaming characters and I am afraid that the original vision of Smash Bros (fighting with your favorite Nintendo character) will get lost that way.

I also don't understand why people hate Steve. I do think he's got a chance. Keep in mind Minecraft is the second bestselling game ever, and one of only two games that sold over 100 million. Microsoft would be a way for him to be kept off the roster, though.
It's mostly going to come down to people's general attitude towards Minecraft in general. Generally when something becomes popular it tends to gain quite a few of detractors especially since Minecraft doesn't fall into the traditional game genres. I remember seeing alot of hardcore gamers scoffing at it's popularity when it originally gained momentum. Though I don't think it's nearly as bad as it used to be I think it's still sometimes difficult to accept as a major face of gaming.

Even I have to admit I don't really 'get' minecraft but I have to accept it's current role in the gaming world.

I feel like just dumbing it down to appearance on Nintendo platforms + popularity is a bit of a disservice to Steve's merits as a character and the overall importance Minecraft has to gaming history.

As far as popularity itself goes, Angry Birds was huge and did have a pretty big impact at the time, but it was ultimately mostly a fad that isn't really that popular today nor do I believe in Japan, even after the movie (which Minecraft is also getting one of.) I genuinely struggle to think of a potential moveset for an entire character based off of a game where you simply launch birds at blocks... where the birds are also completely incapable of moving on their own or doing any action other than their specific ability of being launched by a stationary catapult at the beginning of the level.

Minecraft is also the most downloaded paid app on the Google Play store of all time. Minecraft: Story Mode is #2. (I can't find any sources for iOS nor is any Angry Birds title on the most downloaded free apps, but this also includes non-games. Candy Crush Saga, Talking Tom and Temple Run 2 all appear on the list.)

Smash has always been looking at third parties ever since the N64 original. Saying that the feeling of fighting your favorite Nintendo characters being lost isn't any more true for Steve than it is for any other third party character.

I also have to say I genuinely don't understand that viewpoint when the majority of new characters have always been and will most likely continue to be Nintendo characters, and even the second/third parties always Nintendo-relevant characters.

Honestly Steve could go either way at this point. I’m not really sure if we’ll see any Microsoft characters to begin with but we could get one if se’re lucky.

No that seems about right. Things you didn't include like Codename S.T.E.A.M., Fossil Fighters, Pushmo World, and others probably will only get music and trophies. But I think that will be the case with Style Savvy and Chibi-Robo as well.

I’m thinking Chibi-Robo may just get a Trophy and music as well unfortunately, as for Style Savvy, while I think in the end it will get a trophy and music, I feel there is a small chance we could see a playable character, as the series has shown to be profitable for Nintendo in the past and the character could have a fun and unique moveset, but again it’s a sliver of a chance.

Style Savvy would have to be something like Wii Fit Trainer, something that is included for the sake of being random as hell as there isn't much cross between Style Savvy and Smash's audience that I'm directly aware of.

Style Savvy may be a "let's do it to see if we can" type of character like Wii Fit Trainer and could be a good showcase of characters changing models on the fly.

As someone who actually liked WFT, I want to see Style Savvy get in just so I can see how ridiculous and unreal her moveset would be.

I wonder what her Final Smash would be. Black Friday Sale Bash? :troll:

I have Style Savvy in my beta newcomer Bingo, but honestly, I feel the series will not get playable representation. I have not done further research on the series yet, but something about the character just seems really unlikely.

Anytime I see Style Savvy on a newcomer list I just assume that everyone expects Sakurai to attempt a Wii Fit Trainer 2.0.

And I really don't see him going for that. If he's gonna have a new ''What in the hell is he thinking?!" character it's certainly not gonna be something we see coming.

Style Savvy is far more tame than Animal Crossing, so I'd say that the best that that series could hope for are trophy cameos and BGM tracks.

This ''tame" and ''pacifist" thing has got to stop.

Animal Crossing and Wii Fit are both tame. Both were announced on the same day for Smash 3DS/Wii U.

I think we can safely say that Sakurai doesn't give a damn if your franchise is a tame or one with no combat. And he never has.

You can't even do anything violent in Style Savvy. Compare that to Animal Crossing, where you can intentionally tick off the residents by pushing them around or smacking them with bug-catching nets.

You can't do anything violent in Wii Fit. It's a fitness software.

You can't do anything truly combat or violent in F-Zero. Captain Falcon is probably the most iconic Smash Brothers character.

R.O.B. is an accessory for a system.

Etc, etc.

The way I see it I feel a Style Savvy character can fight by modeling, like walking the runway, flipping her hair, posing, etc.

If you guys wanna predict what Sakurai will offer for Smash Switch's newcomer selection, you are going have to get past the "tame" character barrier and be able to take a risk to predict some choices for character types like last-minute clones, third-parties, and surprise unique characters, even though those types of choices might go against your personal interest. :p

Choices like Villager and Wii Fit Trainer demonstrate how far Sakurai can go to diversify his newcomer selection in each Smash game.

He apparently did in Brawl. It was one of those bull**** reasons that Villager wasn't added to that game, iirc.
I still think it's a boring rule. Like, G&W and ROB are right there so the rule is already broken, and the game is complete fantasy so it feels so superficial.
I do feel that rule was more or less just for Brawl's more serious tone, so if we're continuing down the road of Smash 4's whimsical design then I think that rule has even less power.

Sakurai made that rule up about Villager because he wasn't ready to add him yet.

It was kinda like that scene in Mean Girls where Regina has put on a little weight and is wearing things to school that the other girls have deemed against the rules.

"Whatever. Those rules aren't real."
''They were real that day I wore a vest"
''Because that vest was disgusting."

That scene is basically all of Sakurai's ''rules". They literally exist when he wants them to and then are made to be broken when he wants them broken.

My god. I just likened Masahiro Sakurai to Regina George.

I still stand with the opinion, if Steve from Minecraft could get in, Trevor from GTA5 also could.

While I absolutely agree with you, I do want to mention that one of the major game-play elements in F-Zero is literally destroying your opponents' machines to remove them from the rest of the prix. This is primarily done through side attacks and spin attacks. In fact, I believe F-Zero X actually REWARDS you for doing this (extra lives). When it tells you who your rival is, it's not just telling you that they are the good CPU of the race, but that you should probably attempt to eliminate them from the league, else you may have some trouble.

While F-Zero is primarily about racing, saying that it is "only" about racing is incorrect.

Yes, but literally none of that was pulled for Captain Falcon. He's literally just ''I punch and I kick you!"

His Final Smash is literally the only F-Zero thing about him when you think about it.

True, but your line was "You can't do anything truly combat or violent in F-Zero", not "Captain Falcon doesn't do anything truly combat or violent in F-Zero". Again, I agree with you on the whole topic, I'm just being a nit-picky jerk. :p

Even though we don't normally see Captain Falcon out of the Blue Falcon in F-Zero games, it's been established that he's a renown bounty hunter outside of being a racer, so it's not too crazy for him to do the stuff he does in Smash Bros.

Aside from that, if Sakurai can make a wacky moveset for a character based on various Game and Watch games (smashing people with a divers helmet, hitting them with a chair, juggling them like a ball, etc) then he could easily make a cartoony moveset for the likes of Villager based off of the items they use and the actions they can do in their games (people falling into holes they dug, growing and chopping down a tree, picking up and placing items easily regardless of size).

Wii Fit Trainer using excise poses and moves and such really isn't far fetched either, it's pretty realistic tbh. A rep for Style Saavy though... idk anything about that game and I doubt Sakurai can make a fun and interesting moveset for some fashion model or designer or whatever you play as. Not to mention its barely even a notable franchise compared to AC or the Wii Fit games, so I doubt it's gonna be represented with a playable fighter.

So I was looking at some old Smash stages in Melee and Brawl, and I realized that we currently have four EarthBound stages.

Assuming we get two EarthBound stages and one of them is new, which of the other four stages would you like to see in Smash Switch?

- Onett
- Fourside
- New Pork City
- Magicant

It's a tough choice for me. I'm stuck between keeping the classic Onett or getting an HD Magicant.

the effective 2nd mascot of the series

See, I come across this a lot but I have to ask. If he is why doesn't he get something every game?

I mean aura has been a part of the character since inception, however, nothing has been down with it beyond flavors text

He got a mega evolution, sure, and that form was given lore significance in the Kalos region. However 5th gen is bare, 7th gen with the introduction of Z moves and Ride Pokemon you would think he could be an item finder or have a huge Z move only for him(like Mimikyu got) but he doesn't. Battle Bond is perhaps the weirdest thing in Pokemon to date because its better than anything we've seen so far. It's more powerful than Mega Evolution giving a 110 point boost instead of a 100 point boost. And giving a signature move (Aura sphere like Shadow Ball were never truly signature moves) a power boost along with a hit increase.

Why give him all of these things? Is my question, you can search but nothing is quite like it

so I was looking through my badges in arms. And one I got for byte and barq has byte say “Love and peace”.

I now want this in smash. If it means byte as playable with this taunt, so be it. It means an assist trophy that shows up and says this at the end, fine, whatever. I just want it.

And to that I simply say ''Get your Nintendo legacy, girl"

Pauline is more than welcome to Smash imo.

She has connections to two of the most important Nintendo franchises. Starred in the game that practically started it all for Nintendo, and just made a come back in Odyssey and was the face of it's song that got a ton of attention.

I'd say she has a decent chance but we gotta be careful to not try and base patterns off of one result: That in this case being that Rosalina got into Smash 4.

If she combined her Odyssey looks, a hat toss (doesn't have to be a bonniton, can just be her hat) with MvsDk's minis that would be a cool moveset IMO.

Why would you be hated for that?

She’s been in the mario vs DK series, the original donkey Kong, and odyssey.

Characters have gotten in on less.

Would help the argument if she was playable in something.

So what would you rather have a playable Pauline in:

A sequel to Donkey Kong (Like the game boy Donkey Kong 94) or a sequel to mario vs DK with the minis?

Rosalina got in off of nothing, Pauline started all of this and is a main character in a franchise of games and is in the most recent game.

I'm behind her 100% (and she's gorgeous with all that dark hair but that's not the point)
