I don't think ANYONE sees it the same as Sakurai.Yeaaaah...I'm not so sure about that.
Isaac is a popular pick to super hardcore fans, yes, but outside the Smash speculation bubble? Probably not that big of a deal, I'm afraid. Plus, Sakurai does not perceive ATs nearly as negatively as we do. To him, it's a way of saying "I couldn't make them playable, but here they are as an assist! You can enjoy seeing them in the game and have them help you!" It's a way of throwing in more content for fans to enjoy. Sadly, though, nobody in the core fandom takes it that way. Some even go so far as to take it as a personal slight.
There's a reason the AT sections of directs are always looked at more as character deconfirmation sections than anything else. The problem is there's a lot of characters that feel like they're right on the cusp of being playable but just don't make the final leap that get turned into AT's, and when you know that they're so damn close it can be disheartening to see them as AT's.
For most people when you see AT's like Guile or the Moon, they're happy because they're characters they don't ever expect to be playable but still want to see in the game. When it comes to the characters I've mentioned before (Shadow, Skull Kid, Isaac, etc) there's a chance for them to be playable so it does hurt slightly when they get turned into an item.
At the very least for Isaac, his AT actually does more now instead of just shooting hands.
