She's the most important party member in the main story that isn't Lyria. Gameplay wise, she doesn't have too much and I can off the top of my head come up with about 20 characters who are better for a fighter, recognizability be damned

I find it strange that Hitagi practically has never heard anything about any of the popular picks asked in that thread besides Steve, Katalina and possibility of DQ, and now has chosen to break their silence about Smash this week. And info about Square characters were all dropped willy nilly but Verge is adamant about keeping quiet.

It wasn't too long ago where Hitagi doesn't want to talk anymore about smash yet here we are

i'm guessing his sources aren't in much danger if he's freely talking about the characters that are in. which makes me think that maybe steve, katalina and a DQ rep are common knowledge among insiders. but that's just me thinking too much.

There are better characters IMO, but Katalina makes the most sense as the main rep. Gran/Djeeta are avatar characters that don't have a specific fighting style, so they wouldn't really be good for Smash. Katalina is like the second or third person you meet and is part of the main crew. She's also looking to be the main protagonist for Granblue Re: Link.

Think she is starring in a new game that Platinum is making that may(?) have some rumors of a localization. Best I can think of in support for her being the rep. Would make some sense if that is how they want to bring the series over to the west.

Threo/Sarasa/Thalatha-- Heavy axe character (who can become a sword user) who's in universe thing is HIT HARD AND HIT HARDER!

Neutral B: A super heavy charged axe slam that lets out a shockwave. Charges like Roy/Ike's neutral B and if you do it in the air, the landing releases and does a shockwav in both directions.
Side B: A swing so hard that it carries her forward, and with good timing, you can destroy projectiles
Down B: GROUND ZEROOOOOO!!! Smash the ground super hard and do damage that gets higher the closer you are to her. Slow animatioon but if you fall into it, you're gonzo
Up B: A vertical recovery like Aether, but it buries you if you are caught in the downswing
