He's the reason they frequently have to remake the entire soundtrack in Midi for localized releases to appease him. If we're getting a DQ rep, expect our music to be butchered while Japan gets the good orchestral stuff.

Everyone over on ResetEra says that this Smash is built on a single version of the game, so like, when they patch out the you know what on launch date, that means all regions will get the same patch as well.

With how much of a stranglehold he has on the Dragon Quest IP and even legalities and record labels in between, the only way they can really "get rid" of Sugiyama is if he passes away. It's an unfortunate situation all around, and with how much he's done for the Dragon Quest series, Square really can't do much of anything.

Sure, but he still returns every so often for things like FF14's main themes.

As a freelancer, meaning they bring him in. Both Square and Nobiyo both acknowledge that the talent pool has grown enough that he does not to be the composer, but DQ for whatever reason must always have Sugiyama, even though aside from the victory jingle, Overture and the menu SFX, the music is one of the weakest parts of DQ as a series

With how stupidly tight a hold SE is keeping over their big franchises like FF(7) in Smash, I'm starting to think that being a big franchise doesn't necessarily equate to big chances in Smash. You get a well-known character in, sure, but at what excruciating legal cost?

No, those are making him look like a bettr person than he is. He's extremely racist, a warcrime denier and has openly spouted about how LGBT people are the reason for DECLINING BIRTHRATES, among other really questionable things. Quite seriously, most companies in the west would have dropped him and done legal battles for the music at this point

There's already rumors that Dragon Quest XI might be "snubbed" at the VGAs because of Sugiyama's controversy this year, and honestly I can't blame them at all. At this point he might be becoming a liability, especially when Dragon Quest badly needs to do better in the western market.

I can't see Cygames being anything but cooperative with Smash anyway. Granblue does cross-promotion with something new every five minutes, and they're pretty good at it by now.

I mean, there are enough copycats in the industry who can mimic his style enough, and covers are legally protected in Japan, so long as it is distinct from the original.
