Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

I'm not getting why a Dragon Quest rep is being brought down to the same level in terms of hype as Katalina and Steve. DQ is awesome, but it would depend on what that rep is
because its not the jrpg that I like

All I can say is that it would be very difficult/near impossible to please literally every Smash fan with the DLC, so we shouldn't forget that. Knowing that, I'm expecting Nintendo to go down a different route than what I see speculated, although I do think Rayman has a decent chance.

The difference between Rex & Pyra and a Gen 8 Pokemon is that it'd be a full year since Xenoblade Chronicles 2 released back in December of last year and we probably will get Gen 8 in November 2019.

We know one game, but don't know jack **** about the other and won't until sometime during late Spring. And remember, all the DLC has been finalized, and with the current schedule for Pokemon being so heavily focused onto Let's Go! and other methods, and especially with the only Pokemon we've had for DLC be a previous Gen that's a MASSIVE fan-favorite being Mewtwo, I don't think we're getting a Gen 8 Pokemon.
Pyra/Mytrha are my most wanted, but Pokemon as a company always does massive planning for their promotions.

Pokemon Lets go Eevee/Pikachu already proves they are starting to promote Gen 8 with Meltan and Melmetal and if we look at past Smash bros games, the same thing happend.

Brawl's roster was decided in 2005, Lucario was popping up in early promotional material at that time already (and I believe Gen 4 was supposed to come out in 2005 to, but even then Gen 4 released in Japan in 2006)

Smash 4's roster was decided in 2012, Greninja was a reserve slot

Smash Ultimate was decided in 2015, Incineroar is in the same situation as Greninja

Because unfortunately virtually nobody in America and Europe knows what Dragon Quest is. It's essentially how Grand Theft Auto is popular-wise in Japan, if you will. People here in the U.S. might even know other RPGs like Xenogears and Octopath Traveler before they would think of Dragon Quest, from what I've seen and feel.

It's a thing I actually asked this thread a while ago: the general consensus is that Crash is better (and significantly more popular) than Rayman.

The fact that Rayman has released games more consistently doesn't change that (because Crash's series didn't fade away because of lack of popularity, but general series mismanagement).
Also Rayman is not popular in Japan at all but Crash is pretty big there.

Please do not post media-only replies.

Also, please try to keep your posts constructive(a few jokes are fine). Just posting to be overly pessimistic is getting spammy and adds nothing useful to the thread. Stuff like "Just something that sucks" is pointless. It's fine to be disappointed. It's not fine to spam that type of attitude over multiple pages/posts and bring the whole thread down.

I agree that Minecraft has a chance to sell well since it is a very popular franchise. I suppose it depends on how much the two fandoms overlap and how many people from Minecraft decide to buy smash out of curiosity.

I am not sure about Katalina selling well. No offense to anyone that likes the character but she is a nobody to people outside Japan. I suppose gameplay may help people accept her a bit more but I would call her success a toss up at best.

A dragon quest character is bound to bring hype. I imagine it will sell well.

Things are also pointing out pretty bad for characters with confirmed spirits. Looking at what we seem to be getting, it really seems that spirits wont get a character.

Hmm, platformers?

Well my favorite character is a platformer star? Do I have one of those objectively wrong opinions?
nah you're cool

i'm actually pretty certain that dragon quest is more well known in the west than xenoblade. from what i know dragon quest has a massive following in france of all places

Incineroar is nowhere near the same situation as Greninja's. We at least knew what Pokemon Sun and Moon were before Smash Ultimate will come out, Pokemon X and Y were VERY fresh during Smash For.

And when you look at how many characters we have Pokemon-wise and Pokemon Trainer as separate, we have 10 Pokemon reps. I think we're pretty good on Pokemon, if you ask me.

All people need is to hear the inevitable DQ Overture in whoever the trailer ends up for and I think they'll be sold.

to elaborate on this, i heard that its popularity in france is basically the entire reason that they still localize the games in the west at all

So you're willing to tell me with dead certainty that's the case? Because I'm pretty sure if that was the case, we wouldn't have top players like ZeRo vouche for Rex & Pyra. What about Operation Rainfall? I guess that didn't happen either.

People in the West know Xenoblade much more than Dragon Quest, there isn't even contention on that at all.

He didn't actually leak much from what I saw. Steve is the only one that's confirmed unless I missed something.

Also, there's a lot of joke responses for some reason. Katalina and a Dragon Quest rep are talked about, but not confirmed.

DQ Character - Slime or Erdrick
Steve
Katalina
Western 3rd party - I'm guessing Crash because he deconfirmed a Bethsda rep and Rayman is not popular in Japan at all.

Steve and Katalina are the only ones he's really sure on though.

I live in france and I can say that DQ is far more known than Xenogear, Xenoblade or Octopath. I think that it's the second best known JRPG series (after Final Fantasy).

wow, how shocking that people who like smash vouch for franchises that are actually in smash. literally the quintessential rpg ever isn't worth getting into smash as a generic anime boy and his harem

like dude, just because its not the character you want doesn't mean its a bad choice. you can be salty about it like everyone else without actively ****ting on characters that other people might really like

I was making a joke, that’s why there are a lot of joke responses.

Sorry, I said that poorly. Hitagi said that for sure. Verg hasn't commented on it, but it's the only character that there's confidence in right now.

I was making a joke, that’s why there are a lot of joke responses.
The issue is the user is asking for the actual leaked characters(which Hitagi did leak), so I'm trying to quell confusion.

Um...

Not to be a *******, but...

:4shulk:Now it's Shulk Time!
(Most people know Dragon Quest as Dragon Warrior in the West, for better of for worse)

I’d be willing to bet like, 10 bucks Dragon Quest is more known in the West than Xenoblade.

yeah see? dragon quest is probably more well known in the states than xenoblade too, the only reason xenoblade is known is because of smash bros, this is a pretty uncontentious thing to say

i'm not saying that rex and pyra aren't fit for smash, i'm saying that tots argument is a complete fallacy based on his own biases. dragon quest is incredibly popular, and relatively well known in the west with a niche but still very vocal fanbase that's really upset they haven't released the 3ds remakes of the monsters games god damn it

REMINDER:

We don't know if Hitagi is legit, just that Vergeben kinda sorta trusts him a bit

This could literally be another Loz18 situation here. Be careful

Incineroar is nowhere near the same situation as Greninja's. We at least knew what Pokemon Sun and Moon were before Smash Ultimate will come out, Pokemon X and Y were VERY fresh during Smash For.

Incineroar just like Greninja is the mon Gamefreak decided would be the one Ash would get in the anime as his fully evolved starter. The concept art of the starters for Sun & Moon leaked very early in 2016. That concept art had Ash and Mallow(before we knew who she was 2-3 months before Corocoro officially revealed her) standing besides a sleeping Incineroar.

So yeah with Sakurai deciding the roster in 2015, Gamefreak most likely already had shown the concept art to him, and now that the DLC is decided for Ultimate this year, a Gen 8 mon is very likely, because Pokemon as a franchise is a rulebreaker

A lot of people knew it as Dragon Warrior first. It's slightly niche, but almost as well known as Final Fantasy overall. It was the first JRPG, after all, and influenced tons of games to come, including Pokemon. And Dragon Warrior Monsters influenced how Pokemon breeding works.

Also, poor Prima. I got their Quest 64 guide, and it's great(bar a few typos).
