Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

wow, how shocking that people who like smash vouch for franchises that are actually in smash. literally the quintessential rpg ever isn't worth getting into smash as a generic anime boy and his harem

like dude, just because its not the character you want doesn't mean its a bad choice. you can be salty about it like everyone else without actively ****ting on characters that other people might really like
Oof, we got another person who hasn't played the game, boys. :nifty:

I have never said that Dragon Quest would be a bad choice at all, because I do know that there is legacy behind it. ...In Japan, because that's where all the legacy is at. It has a lot of things holding it back from reaching the potential it has overseas that I wish were solved easily, but that isn't the case, sadly.

In regards to Smash, the only character I've ever "actively ****" on was Katalina, and honestly I think people across the board have, because "mobile game trash". I'm just trying to be as objective as I can and provide both arguments for and against characters if I can and given the character and franchise, and I just don't think that Dragon Quest is possible.

Since we're speaking of being satisfied, let's discuss what DLC would need to have to leave us satisfied. Not as in the cgaracters you want but more of leaving you with a "ok this dlc was well worth it feeling".
For example:
-Literally any Square RPG representation that's more than a non-dubbed character, a basic stage and two tracks. The level of satisfaction starts with Geno for me and rises with Sora, DQ, BD, more FF, Octopath and peaks with Crono.
-Minecraft or Fortnite stuff so this fanbase can shut up
-Any FE character, I need salt with my Shulk buffs
-Someone with ice powers, doesn't even have to be Katalina, I just want a character that can make ice barriers, blades and that kind of ****
And most importantly:
-LITERALLY any Spear or Lance user. I'll take anyone at this point I just want my second favorite weapon type in because Scythe users aren't exactly in the run.
I thought zero and zero were equal.

Characters that had big support threads in 2007 and still popular to these day, I guess.
You mean what these old geezers want?
It's why I hate when people only look at all of the obvious/easy picks for DLC, and act like about everybody wants it. I've seen it too much here, overall.
Agreed. It seems people didn't learn with the Grinch leak.
It's just like with Emily's similar statement; it's his opinion based upon people he's seen. So no, not really satisfying to everyone, but there should be a good amount of people happy with it enough to sell.

Or at least, that's his point.
Didn't you mean Hitagi because Emiliy is a she
Things that I like.

I am everyone. Therefore, if I like the selections, everyone is satisfied!
Only acceptable answer
This is probably beating a dead horse, but the characters in the grinch leak probably would have been satisfying to the majority of the community(at least the hardcore community).
Only character I was particularly interested for were Shadow and Mach Rider tbh. Isaac, Geno, Banjo and Chorus Kids are yawns to me.

I don't even want a Dragon Quest character after hearing that you know whole nationalist thing.

Sora, Geno, or Lara Croft.

But please don't give that **** money.

REMINDER:

We don't know if Hitagi is legit, just that Vergeben kinda sorta trusts him a bit

This could literally be another Loz18 situation here. Be careful
Just a reminder that this is Senjougahara Hitagi ( Character )

It's a She , not a He

A lot of people knew it as Dragon Warrior first. It's slightly niche, but almost as well known as Final Fantasy overall. It was the first JRPG, after all, and influenced tons of games to come, including Pokemon. And Dragon Warrior Monsters influenced how Pokemon breeding works.

Also, poor Prima. I got their Quest 64 guide, and it's great(bar a few typos).
Isn't DQ8 also not on the same level as FF7 in the west?

The moment Madden Player joins Smash as the Activision rep, he will be more hated than Knack and Bubsy.

If we’re getting Granblue lady, wouldn’t the “not popular/not known in a different part of the world” argument be shot down? I don’t think we could use that against someone like Rayman anymore.

you kinda just dodged the point of you saying that xenoblades is more well known than dragon quest, which everyone else has said is pretty bull****. you can at least owe up when you make a mistake

Shouldnt that argument be death the moment we had Marth and Roy on the roster?

I'm hearing that a DQ character is more likely than Sora. Why is this? Because of Disney?

Oh, have I? Because the only reply I've seen to any of my posts were RawstyleEevee RawstyleEevee about Pokemon in Smash.

If anything, I see you're just being a revisionist. :nifty:

I remember when Dragon Quest 8 came out, got a t-shirt that was way too small for me and thinking, "why is Trunks in a fantasy game?"
thats what i wonder when i look at dq11's hero

akira toriyama knows how to draw like 4 different humans (thin man, fat man, thin woman, fat woman), he just gives them different hair

So you're willing to tell me with dead certainty that's the case? Because I'm pretty sure if that was the case, we wouldn't have top players like ZeRo vouche for Rex & Pyra. What about Operation Rainfall? I guess that didn't happen either.

People in the West know Xenoblade much more than Dragon Quest, there isn't even contention on that at all.
Xenoblade is one of zeros favorite games, of course hes gonna want rex and homura in. If theres another xenoblade character then they're also the only obvious choice since they're the main characters

What do you mean by "know" xenoblade better? dragon quest certainly isnt as popular but its a 30 year old series, I imagine everyone knows it exists. I've been playing DQ games for 20 years lol, and DQ 11 sold way more than xenoblade 2, although mostly in japan.

DQ is one of japans favorite things, they deck out everything when a new game comes out, its absolutely insane. Since nintendo seems to care way more about its japanese audience than its western audience, I wouldnt at all surprised if there was a hero character before another xenoblade

Indeed. DQ/DW is still an iconic franchise, but not every game will be nearly as well known. Mind you, there's a reason most Heroes aren't well known, and that's due to them being blank slates entirely. Only Edrick is a character proper in comparison, and Slime is still way more well known(and is a proper character in more than one game in the DQ franchise).

Didn't you mean Hitagi because Emiliy is a she
No, The male pronouns were referring to Hitagi. Poorly written, though, agreed.

Sakurai said at E3 that he got rid of that, alongside the stamina stuff.

I'd love for the first three DLC characters to be from Nintendo franchises just to see the hysteria it would cause in this thread.

What I want from DLC:

(1) At least one character who I actively support.
(2) A spear user (preferably Mipha or BWD).
(3) A balance between first and third-parties.
(4) A focus on a simple but creative movesets rather than gimmicks.
(5) All DLC characters being completely unique additions. No semi-clones.

To be fair JRPGS are nice as hell in America at least. They're a whole subculture of gamers here and a majority of them have to groan because when someone talks to them about JRPGS all they know is Final Fantasy.

Persona, Xenoblade, Dragon Quest, etc. They might be huge news in Japan but in the West if it ain't FInal Fantasy most common folks don't give a ****.

I don't know why, but Final Fantasy just sort of cornered the market here from my experience.

If this is right then the third party charcters are likely Steve,Slime and another Western Made charcter
Crash bandicoot is the first one that comes to mind for western made (although don’t see it in there)

And they may pull another Corrin in smash ultimate as well which is a gen 8 pokemon rep or the anthologist of Metroid prime 4 (if small enough) logically sylux but could really be anybody

Ahtoigh gamefaqs is toxic and idiots as usually

Steve and granblue May be better than we think

If i get both Crash and Sylux on the DLC, i won't need another Smash for a long time.

uh huh

I live in france and I can say that DQ is far more known than Xenogear, Xenoblade or Octopath. I think that it's the second best known JRPG series (after Final Fantasy).
I’d be willing to bet like, 10 bucks Dragon Quest is more known in the West than Xenoblade.
Not before Smash though.

who's the one being revisionist here again? or are you just willingly ignoring posts calling you out on being wrong?

And Kingdom Hearts, but again that ties back to the Disney of it all. You slap a Disney character in an American's face and they'll probably entertain it as a possibility.

We're a simple dumb folk us Americans.

Speaking of Xenoblade's popularity, I think now is probably as good a time as any to bring this up; this was brought up in the Isaac thread yesterday, and it's worth showing here (if it wasn't already).

This chart shows the sales figures for Xenoblade, Fire Emblem and Golden Sun (in Millions). While the XB2 sales are slighly out-of-date, and I believe many of the results are from the notoriously iffy VGChartz, it gets across something which is often used against Golden Sun as a franchise.

For reference, Golden Sun 1 only sold 200'000 less copies than Fire Emblem: Awakening; and that was back in the early internet era, when all it had was physical word-of-mouth, magazine reviews and a (not particularly good) commercial to get it out there.

To say it wasn't a success back in it's day is... well, wrong. Because if Golden Sun wasn't a success then, then Fire Emblem: Awakening isn't a success now.
