Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Would Bethesda saying "Oh yeah." in response to if they've talked about Smash with Nintendo violate any sort of NDA?

Wanna know before I start really considering Dragonborn for DLC.
They could have had talks but nothing worked out, and that's why they can say they've had talks

So for those who own Amiibos, will you be using them to unlock characters right away or would you rather unlock them organically in the game. I'm personally in the latter camp.
I'm doing both. I'm unlocking :ultvillager:, :ultinkling:, and either :ultchrom:/:ultdaisy: with amiibos so I can get my mains early (also to see what happens if you get an echo without their base), and the rest will be organic.

I fail to see how Sora is unexpected as people are talking so much about him.
Because of the Disney hurdle. People are putting a lot of stock into this causing Sora to have little or no chance. Also people using the example of KH3 not being on the Switch. Yet we forget Cloud was in a similar postion, he was seen as impossible. His game was not on a Nintendo console at the time, nor were the two newest Final Fantasy game coming to a Nintendo console. It was such a surprise when he was released for Smash Wii U that people were genuinely shocked and excited.

Sora has the potential to be the same. His newest game is not on the Switch and people believe Disney is too big of a hurdle . If he made it in, I do believe he would receive the same amount of shock due to some hurdles Nintendo would have to go through to get him.

Very conclusive and informative response thank you

Would they not have said that though? They know what they're doing just saying "oh yeah".
Maybe he didn't want to say more, or wanted to generate some buzz (maybe Nintendo passed on all their possible reps). Who knows

I personally want Doomguy so I hope that's not the case but it seems like a possibility

I mean...as I said they know what they're doing. Bethesda PR is pretty hip, they get how things work.

That was my point. Maybe they want a character in Smash (who wouldn't) but it didn't pan out, but they want to get people wanting them in Smash (they must know that fan requests lead to inclusion)

what, you can't really expect any conclusive information from random people on a forum. its not like we know whats going on in bethesda or nintendo.

"oh yeah" is a very vague answer that could basically mean anything. i'm inclined to think that they talked about it, but it didn't work out, which is why they brought it up at all... but it could have changed since this was months ago, presumably before the dlc was even chosen

and i would be just as upset with him as i would be with cloud

Not to mention it benefits Square to have Sora in Ultimate to advertise KH3 and any other KH stuff. People who have never played KH night really love Sora and want to try it out, which means more $$$$ for Square.

The only character I can think of that would equal what Sora could bring is a DQ character, and that series is mostly popular in Japan. KH is popular everywhere. And with KH3 coming out in just a couple of months it would make perfect sense. That game has been wanted by fans for over a decade.

I have a little game to play.
Say, hypothetically, you were put in charge of the rest of the characters. You were told to choose 5 for Ultimate DLC, and then choose 20 more for future installments, bringing the character total to 100. Which 25 characters would "complete" the roster for you? (Please no judging other people's, it's their opinion.)
1. Rayman
2. Sora
3. Steve
4. Katalina
5. Edelgard
6. Geno
7. Banjo and Kazooie
8. Gunvolt
9. Chorus Kids
10. Giygas
11. Shade
12. Arle Nadja
13. Renamon
14. Spring Man
15. Bandana Dee
16. Waluigi
17. Isaac
18. Patra
19. Krystal
20. Balloon Fighter
21. Lottie (Isabelle Echo)
22. Shadow (Sonic Echo)
23. Zoroark (Lucario Echo)
24. Gooigi (Luigi Echo)
25. Zoe Trent
Not sure if this is going to catch on but whatever.

For me I only need one character and that's Sora anyone else would just be icing on the cake.

adding a dq character would add more interest for the series in the west, something that's been slowly gaining over time

Why wouldn’t it? Sora is an insanely popular character. What would any other SE character being that he couldn’t?
They would bring awareness of a NINTENDO library.
Not a library exclusive to other consoles.

For Nintendo the benefit they get from Sora is the money they get from people buying the DLC and honestly not much else.

Nintendo will also get money. Any DLC character will benefit Nintendo, though some more than others
See above.

Exactly, and right now Square is in a financial mess right now. They lost Tabata and 33million, Dissidia NT is being released for free because it sold so badly. And Kingdom Hearts X Union is being banned from Belgium and potentially other countries. Square could use the advertisement for one of their biggest games(KH3). Even people who know about the Kingdom Hearts franchise, but had no interest in it. They may change their minds once they get to really play as Sora. Nintendo seeing this interest in players, may team up with Square to get a KH game collection to be released on the Switch.

There are plenty of character that could be added to promote multiple different series, but we keep getting Mario and Pokémon characters instead.

A DQ character MIGHT add more interest in the series to the west.......or they could just add a character they know is popular everywhere with a highly anticipated game in the series about to release. Kind of seems like a no brainer to me in a business sense.

A DQ character would sell INSANELY in Japan from what I get and benefit Nintendo because the Switch is getting DQ games.

If Nintendo is choosing the DLC characters, then you'd better believe they want to get something out of them.

If a character doesn't: (1) offer promotion for a new/upcoming game, (2) appeal to a lot of people and has the potential to sell extremely well, or (3) open up doors for future collaboration between other companies, then I can't see why they'd want that character in Smash.

OK, but if you don't know about the Disney license, then its not hard to believe. Even with what you mentioned, Sora gets brought up all the time both here and in other places (there was a big thread about it on 4Chan last night). His inclusion wouldn't be a shock.

The problem is that after Cloud, you aren't going to get a lot of surprises because now people expect every major third party character. The only way it could be is if it was someone that was never on the radar. From Square Enix, maybe you could say Octopath Traveler would be unexpected but thats because no one brings it up (though I expect if there is a guest character, it would be from that game).

The most surprising characters this game were from Nintendo. No one expected Ridley and K Rool because they were snuffed in the past and Piranha Plant because no one would have guest it. Simon, on the other hand, was pretty much expected and would have been even without Verge's leak (after Snake and Bomberman, who are you going to pick from Konami). Richter was more surprising as he was an echo of Simon and people didn't think he'd get one. If you are going off unexpected, I would pretty much any guest character is expected at this point and Sora definitely is.

So, we're just going to talk about SE DLC until we see if it happens? I feel like we're getting to the same points every time, although that's not very worrying.

Maybe I'm just bored...

At this point the conversation is pretty cyclical until we get new info.

Ah, the classic "I can't see it so it can't be in". Can't beat the oldies.

Awareness to a Nintendo library? Are you referring to one game that came out over two decades ago that is highly unlikely to ever get a sequel?

See... if I was Nintendo, I think I’d rather go for a character that is more appealing to SE and gamers in general, a character that could also appear on Nintendo consoles in the future and has a very popular series that is ongoing.

Yeah, these guys can't afford to be stingy on lending content NOW. They'll be begging at Nintendo's feet after this.

Plot twist, nothing's revealed at the game awards.
Would be bad. Last time I watched the VGA, the only good things I got out of it was Psychonauts and Shaq Fu.

At this point the conversation is pretty cyclical until we get new info.
Boy, I can't wait for us to talk about Pokémon that'll never get in.

Those new Hitagi comments are interesting, he seems to be confident that the Katalina talks went well and from this:

And besides, DLC is just gonna make a **** ton of money for Nintendo because the characters are pretty cool themselves I guess
Makes it sound like he knows some of them? Which might mean they're closer than we think.
