Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Why are you underestimating Smash Bros this much? It's Smash Bros, it's gonna sell like hot cakes. Unless they do something stupid like cut 70% of the roster for a "re-imagining of the series" it's gonna be fine.
Pretty much. Because we covered the biggest Nintendo characters already, tons of obscure newcomer characters won't detract from sales. The doom and gloom around here is just over-the-top.

Some people want Ribbon Girl in Smash, but they don't think her ability to jump multiple times is enough to warrant her being her own character.

Personally, I don't really care if Ribbon Girl is an alt or not. She's one of my mains in ARMS and I just want to see her in Smash. However, if they do go the separate character route, I hope they really emphasis her differences from Spring Man (Sparky Arms, more jumps, less damage output, possibly lighter, etc.)
Ribbon Girl can also quickly fall to the ground and charge her arms on the spot.

Sweet Arceus, I didn't even think of that! Now I'm terrified of the DLC we might get for this game.
Let's just hope that the base game isn't pulling any punches for DLC's sake.

I hope Corrin wasn't the sole test for if 1st party newcomers would sell over 3rd parties... Of course the 6th FE character would sell worst than friggin' Cloud.
Well I doubt maximising DLC profits was the main concern for Corrin seeing as he was pretty much guaranteed to be the least selling DLC character.

I like to think that, as more time passes, more characters Nintendo introduces will start to become iconic in their own rights, and will be largely recognizable by Smash players if they get into a Smash game at some point later on, however long the franchise lasts. We have no idea how long it's going to be until we get another Smash game after this upcoming one for the Switch that we already know is on the way. That's not to discredit the addition of more third-parties, it certainly doesn't all on it's own, and that's not my point, either. I'm certain we'll see more third-parties in the future, but I think Nintendo will, at one point, once again have plenty of their own to add to the series as well.

Of course, time will tell how much this idea holds up, but I don't think it's farfetched to say some newer Nintendo characters will become considerably more recognizable somewhere down the line.

I just want them to finally add all the “undeserving” characters that some people have been clamoring for.

I'm really not a fan of heavy 3rd Party representation. Three 3rd Party characters all from differing companies and series is, in my opinion, ideal. The more 3rd Parties added, the faster my excitement for the game dies. One of the main reasons why Smash 4 is by far my least favorite in the series.

The winner of the Classic centric Kid Is Icarus poll was Medusa herself. Everyone else was unpopular, but at least Thanny Poo has his followers compared to Pandora and Orcos.

Next is all about that Uprising since many new characters were introduced, even a new threat. Your choices are Hades, Viridi, Fighter (the multiplayer avatars), and Phosphora.

VIRIDI!!!!!!!!!
Seriously Sakurai, please consider her. Nature is cool, Viridi is hilarious and has a good move-set potential.

Opossum Opossum Mind making a move-set of Viridi please? I love your move-sets! :)

Same here in my opinion. I want them to add some ( Crash, Shovel Knight, Geno and Snake ), but if they have more than ten, they are exceeding the limit in my opinion.

I'm not really in agreement with the idea that Smash needs 3rd parties to survive. The entire reason it's worked so far is because they've been tasteful and very particular with the ones they've picked. Sonic, Mega Man, Pac Man, Ryu, and Cloud at the very least are gaming icons. Bayonetta is one in her own right, but I'm not sure she's necessarily up there in terms of pure star power.

Going forward, I think it's a little hasty to think a lot of indie characters are in, or 3rd parties in general. Clearly, conversations have led to the discussion of licensing these characters. This is certainly an important part of the process, and it's an important part that would likely only be endured for properties that Nintendo and Sakurai would feel are worth it. Thus far, I would say the ones we've gotten were worth the hassle.

Considering this game is slated for probably late or Q4 2018, any 3rd parties have probably already been decided upon. Crash N. Sane trilogy just got announced, and while I can't say for certain it seems a bit farfetched for that to be planned on Nintendo Switch around the beginning of development when N.Sane trilogy wasn't even announced for PS4. This is what makes me doubt Crash unless Sakurai believed the idea had merit prior to the Trilogy being announced for Switch. It's entirely possible, but I kinda think the hype around Crash currently is only because of the recent announcement, but that doesn't actually mean he has as strong of a chance as we all may think.

That doesn't mean I don't think he would be worthwhile. I just think the timing doesn't line up.

In terms of Nintendo "running out of ideas", I think it entirely depends on the character selection process this time. We already have Inklings, and there are a few other new IP not currently in Smash that they could choose from. ARMS and Dillon's Rolling Western are two examples of series that could provide a fun new character, though I'm sure at least Dillon would get pushback because he's "too niche" or something like that.

I think it's a good thing to keep in mind where additions and cuts may come from. While I don't want to see cuts, I think additions will be to series that are growing, while cuts would happen to series that are dormant. Now, I'm also a believer that the original 12 will never be cut (so Ness and Falcon at this point are safe), but if there were a cut , I could see it being Lucas unfortunately.

This is, additionally, why a series like Pokemon or Mario will always be in contention to get a newcomer from the fanbase side of things. Both series are continuing to grow all the time, and produce new and exciting ideas. When you compare that to the Mother series, which isn't going to be continuing anytime soon (unless Lucas gets a boost in recognition with a localization of Mother 3 which would be wonderful quite frankly), I could always see Lucas being on the chopping block, with there always being a good chance of a Pokemon.

Anyway, on the top of my head I can think of a good chunk of characters that could be added without, in my opinion, looking like it's the bottom of the barrel.

Decidueye
Ice Climbers
Rex (& Pyra)
Dillon
Wolf
Dixie Kong
K.Rool (I don't think he will be added, but I still don't think this would be a bottom barrel choice)
A Reworked Zelda (BOTW Zelda in place of TP Zelda)
Spring Man
Bandana Dee
Isabelle
Tom Nook
A practical Metroid character (Sylux or...a spoilery dude potentially) (this isn't to say Ridley isn't practical, but I personally am not entirely convinced, and I'm somebody who thinks a PRACTICALLY working Ridley would be great)

Now, things will be bottom barrel if we literally start adding characters that don't meet the "personality" aspect of Sakurai's criteria. Basically, not a character that can be mixed with thousands of others and not be found. In other words, different species from a game. This means Koopa Troopa, Space Pirate, Kremling/Tropical Freeze dudes, etc...The obvious exception to this is Pokemon, because it's Pokemon. The series is based on the different monsters, so it's different from taking a typical Mario enemy and putting them into Smash.

Overall, I think there's a point at which the game will be running out of good option, but we're not entirely there yet. But maybe that is when it should turn into a "game as a platform" kinda like Overwatch but not too much. If that makes any sense anyway.

Yeah, I love the inclusions, but I definitely feel that Smash Bros has lost the "Nintendo All Stars" feel that it used to have. Now, it's all about figuring out what brand new 3rd party or independent character is gonna get in (which I totally understand), whereas it used to be about figuring out which big, well known Nintendo character was gonna get in.

It's not bad, but it's very different.

It never got away from being "Nintendo All-Stars". Every character in the series has qualified as an "All-Star". The fans seem to have standards that are simultaneously too high and too low. They want King K. Rool and then when they get someone who's actually popular and prominent they complain that she's just "Space Peach" and not a "Real" All-Star.

Another alternate roster. This is the only roster I've made with Zelda or Kirby newcomers. I have Funky & Dixie because they share similar models to DK & Diddy and they provide the most interesting move sets in the DK Universe with Funky's surfboard and Dixie's hair.

This is simultaneously one of the largest and one of the most disappointing rosters I've ever seen.

The people who want K. Rool and the people who complain about Rosalina not being an "All-Star" are not necessarily one and the same.

Which video game company wouldn't want to have their character in Smash?
Right!? But didn't Activision screw Playstation Allstars over with Crash and Spyro? They were initially going to be in the game but the negotiations failed. So openly wanting him for Smash is hilarious and awesome.

The main thing I'm curious about is why larger series like Metroid or Fire Emblem only have one stage, while smaller ones like F-Zero and EarthBound have multiple.

Oh, my favorite topic, people pretending as though this game is going to be just as hyped as the others merely because the base characters exist. What infallible logic. It is pretty hilarious; however, I will point out, it has less to do if Smash will survive, because, again, Mario Kart sells like hotcakes, and more to do with the OBJECTIVE FACT that they do not have much to market. Why do you think this speculation cycle is only 9 months? Take a guess, buddy? Ha ha ha... People these days.

Ridley would be a large pull. Dragons are just an archetype people like.

The Metroid series is a homage to the movie Alien. The Alien franchise is a big draw.

This equals money. *pterodactyl screech*

Absolutely, that is the beauty of it, Nintendo still has a couple notable characters that they more or less purposely ignored last time. Ridley, being the most notable. In fact, I would argue that Ridley is bigger, and I am not talking about his size, than ANY of the first party characters they added last time. Even comparing him to Brawl, he would have probably been on the more favorable side of that roster and Brawl added a TON of all-stars.

So Snake, Megaman and Pacman all got shown at an E3, so I'm 99% we are getting a third party reveal this year. Also for Smash 4, each E3 it was at revealed 3 newcomers, so I imagine it will be something like this:

Someone everyone expects like Springman .
Someone that gets everyone hyped as hell like Ridley.
Someone 3rd Party to shock everyone and get them talking for months like Rayman or Crash.

AND I also expect a Smash direct in April-May, so I imagine we will get another hype newcomer there.

Those are basically my thoughts, while Springman makes a lot of sense, they might try to cross promote it with Pokemon, which will also presumably be at e3. Same as Metroid for with the potential for Ridley.

Crash is the best third-party character they could muster. I am not sure Rayman would bring the same hype despite the fact that he is likely in the game. They might save him... Or I guess get him out of the way early and save Crash as a big surprise closer to release because let us be real, e3 is going to be the best we are going to get.

All of those would be super hype. Despite never playing any of Crash's games, he's a huge want for me. I'm not entirely sure who we could see at E3, but I know that seeing any Smash will definitely get people hyped up. I'm not too picky myself since I'm not in speculation as much as I was last go around, but I have no doubt that there will be some super hype moments.

You're refuting an argument that nobody had made. Besides, Smash 4 survived and was really successful despite none of the newcomers bringing in as much hype as Sonic did (which was on a whole different level). Heck people were already making the whole "bottom of the barrel" argument for the Smash 4 roster.

Are you serious? Do you want me to quote them? True Blue Warrior? More like True White Knight, fam.

Nah, there were a couple of hype-worthy newcomers, despite not being Ridley-esque, and to that end, I will admit that the same could happen yet again. Little Mac was a retro monster, Punch Out has huge cultural implications even past just gaming. Rosalina was massive as one of the most popular Mario characters. Mii fighters... Ugh, but casuals love that ****. Palutena was more or less manufactured, but you cannot deny her popularity. Greninja is one of the most popular Pokemon of all time. Those are just off the top of my head.

Beyond that, yeah, that was my point. Smash 4 did survive. And the Switch version will as well. Because apparently I have to repeat myself: That is not the inherent problem. The problem is that the amount of exciting characters that are viable is basically another 5-10 and yet we are going to get another 10-15. Catch my drift?

Idk, Cloud was more hype than Sonic if you ask me.

Yep, it was correct back then as well. Fortunately, they had a larger pool of characters, creativity, massive third-parties and marketing on their side.

1908-0357-9077
Another alternate roster. This is the only roster I've made with Zelda or Kirby newcomers. I have Funky & Dixie because they share similar models to DK & Diddy and they provide the most interesting move sets in the DK Universe with Funky's surfboard and Dixie's hair.

While this is definitely an interesting roster (I like the inclusion of the animal friends), I don't really agree with a lot of it. I suppose that's the thing about speculation, we have to agree to disagree.

Well as for the rumor hard proof I still required I need to see it to believe

Now I got another rumor not smash related but...

https://gonintendo.com/stories/3058...uses-donkey-kong-country-speculation-with-a-s

A new DK game man got be made for the switch and supposivly rare is working on it

So if the kermlings are in that game you know a particular characters chances could potential shoot the moon
Or, even if they are, Nintendo could just give us Dixie because they clearly have a problem with King K. Rool.
