Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Yeah that seems to be the case. Doesn't seem like the characters for DLC are gonna be obvious picks
I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they went for interesting, lesser-noticed picks. As far as I can see, anyone before 2015 or after/from 2018 is fair game for the moment, depending on how many character packs they do.

Who wants to bet that there'll be more DLC after the first five?
There damn well SHOULD BE!!! Give us 5 3rd parties, 5 Echo Fighters, and 5 1st party characters over the lifespan of the Switch. I say go until we hit 100... I mean, why the **** NOT?! There are so many characters that can just be shoved in as Echoes making tons of people happy. Promote some AT's and add 3rd parties.

That's projecting context, to be fair; Sakurai said nothing about DLC, and was seemingly talking about the base roster.

Because their designs were finalized too late and the DLC is seemingly prioritizing 3rd party characters.
You're projecting context and meaning towards something where the most obvious explanation is easily applicable.
Perhaps I'm wrong. Due to my poor memory I'm going off TPC and Nekoo's words.

I did, and the argument came down to "my character didn't get in and a plant did so I'm not buying the game."

Like, it's completely valid, but that is the gist of the post.
I mean, fair enough... but if you really think about it...for a game called "Ultimate", it isn't really Ultimate. Yes it's cool to have all the ACTUAL newcomers and all the returning fighters and stages...but that's the issue...nearly 3/4 of the content is returning content with a few new modes, newcomers and no trophies, and as far as I know, no new INGAME stages (not counting dlc until reveal). It doesn't really feel ultimate to me.

Wasn't Bayonetta 2 also shown at the VGAs?

I feel like it was but I don't feel like looking it up.
Bayo 3 was revealed there, yes.

VGAs are big for Nintendo now, the "Reggie goes and shows Cranky gameplay surprising absolutely no one" days are gone. Zelda gameplay premiere, Bayo 3, Champion's Ballad, all in the VGAs.

Well, time for some direct thoughts, I guess...

That direct..... it was..... i guess kinda.... okay, I cant be positive. That direct was pure trash. Absolute horse****. I waited months for THIS? I want the 40 minutes of my life I spent watching that back.

Ken, while he was basically a lock, and thus wasn't surprising, was still about the only bright spot for me; after all, I like playing Ryu, and I like Ken, and it's nice to see Ryu share this adventure with his training buddy/friendly rival. Better yet, he really feels like Ken; you can tell Sakurai knows his Street Fighter.

Everything else was ****. Incineroar was one of the last people I ever would have wanted in Smash (but not to the point where I'd skip out on the game for him, and for what it's worth, Sakurai definitely nailed his wrestler 'tude), Spirits mode sucks and just appears to be Smash Tour 2.0 (I WAS JOKING WHEN I SAID "Watch this be Smash Tour 2.0", you know), and the Assist Trophy section..... good ****ing god. After ALL that waiting, Shadow and Isaac were still just ****ing assists. That's not the part that really bummed me out, it's the fact that they, along with many other fan favorites that got snubbed, were held off for this ****ing long, giving their fans so much ****ing hope, only to have it ripped apart from their ****ing hands right at the ****ing endgame AND destroying their chances of being DLC. There's literally no ****ing reason they couldn't have been shown off in the earlier directs; that would have been infinitely less crushing, but noo, they had to do the **** move. THAT'S how you build hype, get ****** hopeful for their most wanted, then waiting til the end to go "lol, they ain't playable and they won't be DLC, yeet yeet." I feel especially bad for Skull Kid supporters; they didn't even get the dignity of having their character get deconfirmed as part of the Assist Trophy presentation; Skull Kid's deconfirmation was just casually dumped to the website as if it didn't ****ing matter. Magor douche move.

All that on it's own wouldn't have made me hate this game, and I'd still have probably played it and loved it. But then I moved on to the worst part of the Direct; the DLC section. I was still pretty bummed that none of my top 5 were in, and I was holding out some hope..... and then I saw Piranha Plant. Then I saw his splash screen. I didn't pay much attention to the rest of his reveal. I was mostly just standing there, slack-jawed, trying to comprehend what the hell just happened. When I finally got my thoughts back, I just thought, "Really. REALLY. REALLY. Are you ****ing kidding me? ARE YOU ****ING SERIOUS RIGHT NOW?" THIS is our first DLC character? A basic mook from a Mario game, not even an actually important one like Goomba or Koopa, just one random Mario enemies out of dozens? REALLY! REALLY?! Is this some joke? Because it's not funny in the slightest. Instead of literally anybody else, they devoted resources to a character that literally nobody voted for. What a joke. What a ****ing joke. Say what you will about any of the fan favs that got shafted, but at least, y'know, they're not dime a dozen mooks and are actually important to the games they're in. This is the only character in Smash history that I felt was legitimately a waste of a slot, as I can't come up with a single justification for his inclusion.

My absoulte most wanted ever, Waluigi, was deemed unworthy thrice, but a ****ing Piranha Plant, just one of many, many basic enemies, is apparently perfectly worthy for Smash. So in other words, a Piranha Plant is a more worthy inclusion for Smash than Waluigi or literally any of the fan favorites that got snubbed. A Piranha Plant was apparently better than any of my most wanted, and was more deserving of valuable resources and dev time in a time when slots are so limited. That just hurts on a personal level. *sniff*

All in all, this direct felt like the ultimate middle finger to me. Is that petty? I know that's petty, but that's just how it felt. I learned, apparenly NONE of my favorite characters actually matter. So anyways, I am legitimately gonna cancel my preorder. I get Ultimate will still probably be a great game, but it just won't be one for me. I wish I could still enjoy it, but I won't be able to take my mind off the fact that a ****ING PIRANHA PLANT can be playable but Waluigi can't.
Sakurai always includes a WTF character. But yeah I feel you, it still sucks for fans of niche characters. I personally wanted Paper Mario and now there's basically no chance for that.

Thinking about Piranha Plant on the same level as ROB, G&W, Duck Hunt, and Jigglypuff may make it not seem so bad. But again if you don't want to spend your money on this game I fully understand. Sakurai has made many bad(selfish/jerky?) decisions, but Nintendo never has been perfect and they never will be.

Sakurai didn't put Bandana Dee in because he doesn't want people to think he has bias!

With the fact that DLC characters were decided during the project plan, I hope people can come to terms with the fact that Geno will be a Spirit and nothing more.

They would not throw this character in as a Spirit only to reveal him as full-on DLC. Makes no sense whatsoever.
Please man... please have some damn hope at least..... :(

I wonder how mad Papageno must be....
I'm ok, more so just BUSY responding to a lot of people in private messages and stuff PLUS I always buy cheap halloween stuff on Nov 1st so I was out most of the afternoon. Obviously I'm not super excited we got box theory and SOMEHOW the grinch leak was faked. I have NO idea what happened with the grinch leak it had so much going for it and legit felt unfakable (someone could get in a lot of trouble messing with legit companies and people though). Also some things that just happened to line up like the grinch promotional material being at the nintendo comic con UK booth and the sprout item looking like it might be from golden sun etc... that stuff isnt even controllable and just happened to fall into place cause of dumb luck. its so crazy it was fake. how does someone fake all that!?

TBH im pretty disappointed with the final direct, the game however is fine im very happy with it. i was accepting box theory a month ago and was very happy with the game like that but to get such an unbelievably masterminded leak RIGHT before this... ended up making the final direct very disappointing. its crazy it wasnt real. I cant even figure out how it could be faked im so shocked.

piranha plant is like...i actually think its cool but with SO many highly wanted characters it hurts its the final reveal here, should have been shown earlier imo.

I still have hope for Geno, he's just been seen as some token thing and it seems we've seen playable characters having that same icon so I still think he has a good shot as one of the DLC characters BUT admittedly I think his chances dropped a little after this.

i STILL believe my source and they always said their source was only sure of banjo. before the grinch leak my source was thinking box theory and then banjo would be dlc (which ive said was what they initially thought before) so thats where we are now with it all. their source had only HEARD the banner characters and also incineroar and was confused by the lack of incineroar but we figured the banner was what we'd get after the grinch leak.

Now we are back to thinking its banjo as dlc, but who knows what else. possibly a SE rep or a Minecraft character as vergeben has been spot on this entire time and we still havent seen "minecraft content" (though maybe its just a mii costume dlc, who knows).

The potential of Piranha Plant being our WTF is kinda nonsensical to me.
I mean...he /is/, but not our traditional base game WTF.

I feel having the Piranha Plant as one of the coveted DLC characters for a game like Ultimate is just an...astounding move.
And lemme make it clear: I LOVE HIM. But I'm just shocked and would love to hear why Sakurai included him.

Chose “Cancelling my preorder” because if I had a pre-order, I would cancel because my boy, Son Goku, is absent.

That's subjective

Am I the only one that loves this direct?

I give it a 9.5 / 10. Might even be better than the August Direct. Well, maybe.

Yeah, there's probably gonna be another season pass come 2020.

For reference, Splatoon 2 pushed it's end date for content back to December, and I wouldn't be surprised to see them push it back again. Nintendo's going all in on Games as a Service.

What a time to be alive.

There was a problem fetching the tweet

I can't be that mad, this generic enemy did what no other generic enemy could...
God, I love being in the Smash fanbase. I love this fanbase so much. You guys are awesome people, even the Bayonetta mains.
Okay, not the Bayonetta mains. But everyone else.

I think the "Spirits can/can't be DLC" can be determined at launch by finding out if there is a Piranha Plant spirit or not.

PP has had trophies in Brawl, 3DS and Wii U, so it seems like an obvious choice for a spirit imo given how they're replacing trophies.

If it doesn't have a spirit, then we can take that comment of "characters other than fighters" literally.

If it does..., then the floodgates open.

So quick question, did they show off Robin’s new FS? I’m kinda hoping it’s Grima (sorry I’m on mobile and don’t know how to do spoiler tags)

As for the rest of the Direct, I thought it was ok. Incineroar was the star for me in terms of characters. They made him so full of personality. World of Light looks awesome. I was definitely annoyed about them spending time on basic things like the “Help” menu. PP is unique but not gonna lie i’m salty about it a tad, however it’s a free character so I can’t complain. The deconfirmations were really rough. Especially the Xenoblade 2 deconfirmations. At least there is still hope for Geno and Banjo. Not gonna lie, I was really hoping for Mach Rider, that was a cool concept.

Overall it was a good Direct, however you can tell that Sakurai is starting to get tired of the series by some of his actions. Rest well Sakurai, you deserve it.

That's exactly what he's referring to though, he's referring to the fact that the characters for DLC have already been decided a while ago.
Plus, the DLC characters were probably ones that were intended for base roster, but weren't able to be worked on or were considered low priority so they didn't make the cut.
Or maybe that they were decided right after the roster's finalization.

If this wasn't the case, I'd honestly doubt Rex or Pyra wouldn't be apart of the DLC lineup then. Or even the other characters that we thought were "locks".
i wouldnt even say the dlc is low priority, its probably just they had there list of who they planned and for 3rd parties who they had rights for and decided who would get into the base game and who would be better suited for dlc as single announcements that would bring in the most money

RIP Grinch Leak, you were to good to be true.
When incineroar appeared:
Man that direct is going in the dictionary under anticlimactic. Piranha Plant and 5 more dlc characters confirmed, and bunch of other nonsense I don't care about. I could probably list several hundred characters I would have picked over Piranha Plant, but at the same time Id pick it over a good chunk of the characters in the roster.
So in the end I got Ridley, K. Rool and Piranha Plant. Plus my old favorites returning. So Pretty good but could have been better.

Have there been any over the top rage reaction videos yet?

I'd like to agree, but Nintendo seems to want a strong presence there. Now we're forced to care
Even if it's confirmed we're getting a Smash trailer at the VGAs before hand, I'm not wasting my time. I'll just go onto the website after to see who it is. It makes complete and total sense as to why you would want to promote something at the VGAs, but my experience watching them last year was absolutely miserable.

I'm a little biased here, sense I feel the same about all award shows

Mariotehplumber seems to be the one who faked the leak.

Apparently one of his friends(?) faked it using stuff from where he worked, though the Grinch stuff was real and wasn't intended to be there according to a 4chan post. Mariotehplumber seems to be involved even without the 4chan post so I believe it.

I don't think that has anything to do with DLC, but with the base roster; "We decided on which fighters to include when we started planning." refers to the fact that fighters are decided at one of the earliest points in development (really, the earliest-- the initial project plan). It makes no sense for them to have set-in stone plans for DLC characters releasing next year over two years ago.
It makes total sense. These sorts of things are decided waaaaayyyyy in advance-- and absolutely have to be if there are third party negotiations involved.

When you're directing or financing a game's development, there are a ton of things that need to be okayed. When Sakurai's making his plan and presenting it to Nintendo, it's not just which characters get in. It's a general financial proposal saying "I need X amount of time, X amount of money to pay X amount of staff, and we will accomplish X, X, and X." A popular way of covering overhead expenses is to plan ahead for DLC and factor that into your budget and staff. That's likely why he already knows it'll be five characters, and they already estimate they'll all be finished by Feb. 2020. That was the plan all along.

Fair, but still...we have
*Returning fighters from brawl-melee (and obviously smash 4) and SOME new
*A ton of old assists with SOME new
*Pretty much only old stages with no new non dlc stages
* No trophies
* A mediocre looking spirits mode
Doesn't that sound kinda...lame?

Outside of some disappointments, I came out more hyped, maybe it was because all my most wanted survived the GENOcide though, so I'm a bit biased.
